Exactly. They send you where they need you, and even if you reenlist for a particular duty assignment, there's no guarantee that it won't turn hot where you are. I served two tours in West Germany (Augsburg and West Berlin) in the 1980s, during the Cold War. We weren't getting shot at and none of my friends went home in boxes, but that could have changed at any time.
