Let us hope they learn this lesson, not that they shouldn't ask tough questions, but that only thoughtful questions will earn thoughtful answers.

Hey Jerry, thanks for the post, quite a trip down memory lane for this San Diego ex-pat. Ah yes, J. David and Associates, the good ol' days.

Curiously the two high points for San Diego sports fans came in playoffs short of the big prize. The first was the '74(?) series against the Cubs when the Pads came back from an 0-2 deficit (in a best of 5 series) , with Dodger transplant Steve Garvey hitting a home run in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the pennant. Only to get beaten by the (then) outstanding Detroit Tigers in the World Series.

The other was the AFC playoff game played in sweltering heat in Miami (I forget the year) and featuring Kellen Winslow's superhuman performance. Only to lose to the Cleveland Browns in the (as we dubbed it) Ice Bowl.

Always the bridesmaid I suppose.

Chicago U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the prosecutor who brought the charges, described the allegations against Blagojevich as a "political corruption crime spree," but emphasized that he had no evidence Obama was aware of the scheme.

Then again, as we well know, those not in the reality-based community never let little things like facts get in their way. Do you think part of H's elation was that he now has something other than BHO's citizenship to obsess about?

I supported Dean for the DNC chair back in 2005 because I believed in his vision of expanding the Democratic electorate beyond the same old states that did nothing beyond guaranteeing Ds solid 46% losses.

And, though some may argue, I think he very much laid the path for Obama both in that context as well as in his vision for using new media.

Who now to lead the DNC? David Plouffe perhaps?

Agreed. And frankly I wonder if we have done McCain a great service by rejecting his presidential bid.

The McCain I saw tonight reminded be of the McCain I admired not so many years ago, like his soul had been held prisoner to the worst elements of the GOP campaign machine, but had suddenly been released.

Great catch! Indeed Kristol strikes me as being among the worst of the perpetrators of this kind of punditry.

What really amazes me, especially with Kristol, who is almost invariably wrong about everything, is that he gets that prominent perch at the NYT.

Surely there exist some credible conservatives somewhere, or is this a nefarious plot by the Times to discredit conservatives generally?

I mean this question seriously as I may well be missing some essential point.

But if the US stock market bottoms out won't some of those central banks (China, I'm looking at you) who are sitting on enormous amounts of cash just rush in and pick up bargains left and right.

Isn't that what Japan did when the US economy tanked in the early eighties, go on a Manhattan shopping spree?

And wouldn't that influx of cash free up the credit markets?

I must be missing something here, can somebody help me out?

Tony, while I disagree that the Obama Campaign proper has been suffering a Palin addiction, it certainly has been rife among the press (of course) as well as the liberal blogosphere, including yours truly.

In truth Sarah Palin is only symptomatic of the problems I have with the McCain candidacy.

Like many here I once admired John McCain's apparent honor and integrity. But for reasons best known to himself he has decided to abandon the persona grown through years of public service and succumbed to the blandishments of the worst elements of the GOP attack machine.

By choosing Governor Palin as his Veep John McCain has demonstrated that he is either unserious about the job of being president, or, he is delusional.

A serious John McCain would have recognized that as a 72 year old man with a history of melanoma, his VP would need to be someone who, in cold-blooded fact, needs to be someone who is as ready to assume the presidency as anyone can be on "day 1".

Sarah Palin is a virtual antithesis of such a person.

The other possibility is that John McCain is delusional: he simply doesn't believe he's going to die.

Either way, he's unfit to serve and so, as I said, Sarah Palin is only a symptom, John McCain is the disease.

Palin just hasn't given much thought to anything outside of her immediate surroundings, first in Wasilla, then in Juneau. Like I assume, many working moms with 4, and now 5 kids, she's been too busy to give it much thought.

Completely understandable.

Of course being as incurious as GWB might be considered a disqualification for leadership of the most powerful nation on the globe. But to a certain flavor of conservative all this knowing stuff is dangerously elitist.

A point of hope, if an MSM dinosaur like Mark Halperin is calling BS on both McPalin and the press:

I'm not saying the press should be out to get John McCain and Sarah Palin. But if a core part of their message is something that every journalist -- journalism organization in the country has looked at and says it's demonstrably false, again, we're not doing our jobs if we just treat this as one of many things that's happening.

Unfortunately that may be enough. Republicans are famous for their easily reusable soundbite responses. I'm sure a former newsreader like Ms. Palin will do fine.

Plus with the "expectations game" being so stacked, ironically BECAUSE of her inexperience, I suspect that if she doesn't drool on herself her debate against Biden will be touted as a huge "win" by our fine, thoughtful pundit class.

I don't like it any more than you, but I fully expect it to go that way.
