In the USA anyone who wants a gun can get one. In the States, when it comes to understanding or accounting for this type of madness, gun control is moot, because anybody with hands can obtain and use a gun. We have opted for unlimited supply of guns in the USA, so, the only remaining approach to try to control this type of aggressive, antisocial behavior is a mental health approach.

Re: Struggling to Understand the Fort Hood Shootings | The Atlantic Wire

My comment will not concern the ethnicity or politics of the alleged shooter. I would simply like to point out that even the best educated among us are vulnerable to the bullshit on which the military is based. It
is not easy to get people to the point where they are willing, without any reason, to blow other people away. The dehumanization of the enemy is the first order of business for any military. Belonging to such an organizaton and being in a position where one can not freely vent feelings about the situation one is in and/or one's superiors is soul corroding at best, quite possibly involving huge amounts of deception and/or self-disgust. The military is inherently morally corrupt and only idiots and right wing fools think otherwise. The poor dude who is suspected of having blown away 13 people today had been put into a no win situation. There was no way out. The only way to get out of the military easily is to tell your boss that you are gay. Perhaps our accused shooter, for whatever reason, could not do that. Thus, he was left with a really bleak prospect. Go to Iraq or to Afghanistan, participate in a really useless, totally unjustified war, help keep fellow soldiers in good shape to blow away the natives, and try to justify all this garbage to himself. Not an attractive prospect. So,of course the guy went postal.

Re: Bush Admin Can’t Count on Torture Memos for Cover

I pretty much agree with what has been stated above. The real problem comes from the fact that all the
participants in the above scenario are politicians. As such, even the best of them are not really to be trusted. I am sure that you are familiar with the old lawyer joke: Why don't sharks eat lawyers? Professional courtesy. Even for the most egregious behavior, there will probably be a real lack of interest in exposing and correcting the behavior.
If one adds to the stew the fact that many of the people in the new administration do not have clean hands, themselves, it is difficult to imagine any type of vigorous prosecution of wrongdoing among the bush cabal.
I hope to be proven wrong.
Christopher Robin
