While running for office, he gave the impression of being concerned with doing what is right. In the time since election, he has been concerned only with appeasing the crazed right wing of the USA. Here, once again, Obama has punked out. He has delivered a lukewarm defense of religious liberty and then gone on to clarify away almost all of what he said and implied in the speech. Obama clearly is not the man he presented himself as when running for election. Either he perpetrated a first class hoax on the electorate or he is illustrating the old dictum"Power corrupts". Obama and everyone else involved in politics in the USA seems to have forgotten, if they ever learned, what politics is supposed to be about. It is supposed to be about public service, not just getting reelected. and in the current, highly polarized, cultural wars atmosphere of the USA, presenting oneself as a progressive and then giving up on all major points, when confronted by the right wing, so that it appears that one was actually a disguised wingnut to begin with, is not going to cut the mustard. If one wants to be considered as progressive, one should walk the walk, not just talk the talk. Leadership
calls for taking positions without regard for whether or not they make the troglodytic right wing happy. I, for one am thoroughly disgusted with Obama's performance as president. I call on Obama to resemble his campaign rhetoric and do something good and right for a change. Stand up on your hind legs, Mister Obama and say flat out that the Muslims have an absolute right to use their land any way that is not prohibited by law. No more, no less.

Re: Struggling to Understand the Fort Hood Shootings | The Atlantic Wire

Who in hell said or implied this had anything to do with gun control?? In the USA anyone who wants a gun can get one. In the States, when it comes to understanding or accounting for this type of madness, gun control is moot, because anybody with hands can obtain and use a gun. We have opted for unlimited supply of guns in the USA, so, the only remaining approach to try to control this type of aggressive, antisocial behavior is a mental health approach.

Re: Struggling to Understand the Fort Hood Shootings | The Atlantic Wire

My comment will not concern the ethnicity or politics of the alleged shooter. I would simply like to point out that even the best educated among us are vulnerable to the bullshit on which the military is based. It
is not easy to get people to the point where they are willing, without any reason, to blow other people away. The dehumanization of the enemy is the first order of business for any military. Belonging to such an organizaton and being in a position where one can not freely vent feelings about the situation one is in and/or one's superiors is soul corroding at best, quite possibly involving huge amounts of deception and/or self-disgust. The military is inherently morally corrupt and only idiots and right wing fools think otherwise. The poor dude who is suspected of having blown away 13 people today had been put into a no win situation. There was no way out. The only way to get out of the military easily is to tell your boss that you are gay. Perhaps our accused shooter, for whatever reason, could not do that. Thus, he was left with a really bleak prospect. Go to Iraq or to Afghanistan, participate in a really useless, totally unjustified war, help keep fellow soldiers in good shape to blow away the natives, and try to justify all this garbage to himself. Not an attractive prospect. So,of course the guy went postal.

Re: Bush Admin Can’t Count on Torture Memos for Cover

I pretty much agree with what has been stated above. The real problem comes from the fact that all the
participants in the above scenario are politicians. As such, even the best of them are not really to be trusted. I am sure that you are familiar with the old lawyer joke: Why don't sharks eat lawyers? Professional courtesy. Even for the most egregious behavior, there will probably be a real lack of interest in exposing and correcting the behavior.
If one adds to the stew the fact that many of the people in the new administration do not have clean hands, themselves, it is difficult to imagine any type of vigorous prosecution of wrongdoing among the bush cabal.
I hope to be proven wrong.
Christopher Robin
