the recent McCain/NYT dustup is also illustrative. After the GOP Puritans and ideological zealots pursued Slick Willy for years over marital matters that were none of their business, it's now considered very tacky/gauche to even pry into other people's, even politicians' private lives.

McCain was the only possible GOP candidate with a shot.

that's because in the view of many people. he's just about as far removed from the current administration one can get while staying within the GOP.

so these polls don't shock me. McCain is a compelling personal story.

it would have been far more amusing had Willard been the nominee, especially in his "Rick Santorum" Willard 2.0 re-invention.

AQ wasn't in Iraq, it was in Afghanistan, though it certainly has Persian Gulf war connections thru its mother's teat and beehive in Saudi Arabia.

if you were really that worried about AQ and the Persian Gulf you would have invaded Saudi Arabia.

but going into somewhere you're not wanted and sitting on a powderkeg is surely the most expensive and dangerous tactic of all.

stevez overplays the relevance of Saddam's "whipping up the insurgency". If he were the central figure behind it, it would have died down upon his capture. It did not.

And having Odierno's IV come in from Turkey certainly wouldn't have prevented Saddam from sneaking out and escaping somewhere. Would have simply made it more difficult. Non Arabic speaking, non native troops don't make for good "hounds".

now that the Sunnis have turned against AQ it will never find a haven in iraq, not even in a civil war (unless the Sunnins were desperate enough to admit them in again to fight the majority Shiites)

the problem is we went into a country that wasn't an AQ haven, and allowed the haven everyone knew about, Afghanistan to deteriorate and go to crap.

well, for me it's a no loss situation.
