The vaccine has not been tested enough and its long term side effects are not known. It's not about being a role model. It seems as though individuals have no power these days - If you work in a hospital and you choose to not get the vaccine, then you must wear a mask - I will be wearing a mask. Thank you.

Re: Are you receiving the influenza 2009 H1N1 vaccine?

a Paediatric Nurse!, she simply should take it :)

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

It was in the comments. It isn't currently up but I have the back up of the original blog to pull from. I can't remember, did you both have the conversation in the comments on that post or privately? It might be a trick to install the comments too. I can try :). But not tonight. I am pooped.

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

That drawing sounds cool. I hope you find the file, because I want to see it. Also, did you ever put your blog post from when you published "Body Art" on Boundless onto this blog? Cheryl and I had a good conversation going on that one.

Remind me, are the conferences in the spring, or the fall? Because by fall I'll probably (crossing fingers) be at a grad school in a non-Californian environ.

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

AWESOME... Yes! I have a drawing that was inspired by the movie Constantine and part of it is my little abstract rendition of hell based on Lewis' description in "The Great Divorce." NOT kidding... if I can find the .jpg of it I will put it up.

I thought about trying to organize one of those online meetup type of thing with all my friends at some point. Not that I am any big deal but ... a lot of my online friends met through a bunch of my online shenanigans and I think we could pull it off somehow... Maybe next year around the time we are all in Southern California for the freedom conference? I am planning on staying longer for vacation....

Hmmmm... you wanna help plan something :)?

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

I didn't see the Passion, and will not see Event Horizon. I do not take scary/gory stuff that well. In small doses, it's ok, but a whole movie worth will make me have bad dreams (or not sleep at all). Personally, I love CS Lewis's picture of hell in "The Great Divorce" just a big boring grey city where everybody is miserable. Forever.

It would be fun to have some sort of themed party with dressing up involved. If we lived close to each other, I would totally want to host one with you. :)

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

...Halloween is of course the only excuse adults have for doing so.
That's true but it would be fun to think of other reasons to do so. Masquerade ball? ... themed parties? That could be a lot of fun.

Very good examples of dark art. I also like the demon baby in Gibsons "The Passion." Do you remember that scene? Gives me chills to think of it ... scared the crap out of me. Also, there was a horror flick called "Event Horizon" that literally scared the hell out of me. I don't know why I watched it but I am almost 100% convinced that the literal "Hell" is a black hole at the point of the singularity where all the laws of physics give way to the absolute definition of chaos.

I recommend seeing the Passion (full of dark dark imagery but leads to the resurrection) but I do not recommend seeing Event Horizon... Just take my word for it.

Re: Dark Art & The Annual Halloween Question and New Theme

I like Halloween. There are a lot of Americans here at McGill and a good number of them are fully funded. I have no idea if the medieval history department is good. I have found it's best to go to the school that will give you the connections you need to find employment after. If you come to visit Toronto, let me know when. I might be able to sneak away and meet you for coffee.

Re: I Fell Off The Krystal Wagon – A Gym Update

The best place for medieval history in Canada is Toronto, actually. UBC just happens to have somebody in my field with whom I could work. I don't know of anybody I could work with at McGill. I'm not sure about Canadian schools and financial aide for foreign students, though. I think on that score it will be easier to maneuver US schools.

Re: I Fell Off The Krystal Wagon – A Gym Update

Chicago is like Montreal. And, Miss Ellie, you must come up to Canada! When you come to Montreal you will have a place to stay and a personal tour guide. Although, I am still figuring out Montreal myself. Yes, U.BC doesn't get much of a winter. It snows so rarely there.

Would you ever consider a Masters at McGill?

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

I have Skype long distance which allows me to make unlimited phone calls in North America for $30. a year or less than $4 a month. I will possibly be applying to the University of British Columbia. But I'm told that it doesn't afford a true Canadian winter, at any rate. The leaves are turning red!!! I was in Alberta on the weekend. Brrrrr. The night I left they had a big snowfall. Glad I don't have to drive in it. Have you ever been to Edmonton?

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

yeah, I know. It's one of my quirks. I TRY to get into chats...have ever since '93 and I just ... don't like it as a communication medium. Not sure why... Is it snowing in Montreal? My friend who is in Edmonton now just sent me video of the first snowfall.

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

I really like chat because I have so many friends who live in other states and it makes it a lot easier to keep up with them without incurring nasty phone bills. Although recently I've developed a problem with one friend who doesn't quite seem to understand that when my status is set to busy it means that I don't want to talk.

I would like an invite, thanks. :)

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

Oh and I now have about 8 contacts. I gave my first invites to co-workers and some of my geeky friends got their own invites. Would you like one? I already had you on the list about mid-way down :)

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

Well, I can see that but I don't see Wave as a chat client. I hate chat in any form so I don't see me using it for that. But today, I used it with a co-worker (in another state) to collaborate on a document and the live thing was awesome. We were on the phone talking and editing at the same time... SO much easier.

It's aggravating to me in that it is a pretty huge learning curve and a lot of the bells and whistles aren't automated yet. It's also having command line to server communication problems (my uneducated guess.) BUT ... that's to be expected in a limited preview. That's what people sign up for when we request and early invite. It isn't released to the public yet so I have to tell myself to hold my horses ... it IS cutting edge but we are some of the first to work out the kinks.

So, while it is a pain in the neck on a couple of levels... I honestly do see it being an email, conference (call and video chat), collaborative writing and dialog, file storage, file sharing and much much more HUGE asset. It has potential to change the game on photo sharing as well. It could definitely be an "email as we know it" killer.

But as for chat, you are asking the wrong person because I hate chat :).

Re: Surfing the Google Wave and My Head Hurts

Slate just had an article about how much their tech guy doesn't like Wave because the real time thing makes chatting really self-conscious.
