The single entity business model of MLS would not allow them to accomplish their goals. The NASL is a four year old league with grand plans. They are in better shape than MLS was after four years and will be in better shape in their 20th year than MLS is currently. They are pretty much irrelevant on the sporting landscape in America, but that takes time to change, and they will accomplish that.

Re: Don’t Be a Jackass Whisperer — A Book, An Offer, A Video

Give away as much kindness as you possibly can!

Re: Does Anybody Remember Leeds United And Sheffield Wednesday?

...and I wanted to be the first one to point out that Southampton could follow the same route down to League One that Leeds did! Investments in players that did not play well, a new stadium that stretched the club's budget, and poor performance on the pitch resulted in relegation after more than 20 years in the top flight. Now they are mired deep in the relegation zone of the Championship.

We may be following the same route. Cash strapped, overspent, poor performances, definitely deep in a relegation fight: Hopefully we haven't overspent ourselves quite as much as those other examples.

PLAY UP POMPEY!!!

Re: ESPN and Setanta To Team Up To Beat Fox?

I don't see ESPN ruining football coverage because they have so much else to cover. They won't force it onto shows like 1st & 10, PTI, Around the Horn, Jim Rome is Burning(in hell, I hope). It may get the occasional mention on those shows, but very rarely. It will have more of a presence in both SportsCenter and ESPNews, but with just highlights. They will leave the analysis to the people on ESPNSoccernet Presspass, which will be fine.

That more channels are competing to show football is fantastic. More options for us. They will pick up more leagues from all over the world, which is a good thing for fans of the game. We already see more live football from around the world than probably any other country. England, Italy, Spain, Germany, US, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Honduras. I've seen in the channel guide on DirecTv live broadcasts from all of those countries. What other country gets all of those live? or tape delayed?

Re: In This Year’s Relegation Battle, No One Is Safe

The EPL, and football in general, is most exciting when every team in the league has something to play for. A dozen teams have legitimate concerns about being relegated. That makes for some exciting football and great drama off the pitch. For instance, who will make the big transfer of the weekend? Will we see another midnight deal like last year's sale of Benjani to ManCity to pay for Defoe coming to Pompey?

I've been through relegation battles before, but this one will involve so many teams that it's mind-boggling. It also means that I'll be watching more games than ever just to keep up with who is playing well and who is not.

On a personal note: Gotta admit I'm not disappointed to see Defoe get injured. At least he won't have to take a taxi to Portsmouth to get looked at by the team trainer. Oh, and Harry is tapping up Robbie Keane? I'm shocked. Shocked! He's never done that before...oh yeah...

PLAY UP POMPEY!!!

Re: US TV Schedule For Midweek Premier League Games

Tony Adams is in too far over his head. He's not top-flight manager material. If we survive to play in the premiership next season, it will be in spite of Tony Adams.

While I would have liked to have a point or three off of Villa, I did not think it was realistic, so I was not disappointed to see the loss. We played pretty well, especially after Sol 'I'll just let the other team score' Campbell was substituted. Belhadj killed any real chance of scoring when he got sent off for being a prat.

Re: For Martin O’Neill, Fourth Place Finish Is Bigger Prize Than Winning a Trophy

Finishing 17th in the Premier League is more important than winning either the FA Cup or the League Cup. It's worth more money, plain and simple. Give the FA Cup winner the spot in the Champions League that is reserved for the 3rd place team and give the League Cup winner the spot for the the 4th place team. Do that, and the big clubs will take it so seriously that they would field weakened teams for the league rather than a cup competition. No amount of money would change the mindset of the big clubs on this competition. It has to be Champions League spots.

The Premier League for some of the clubs has become a qualification round for the Champions League. The Cups are meaningless to ManU/Chelsea/Liverpool/Arsenal. Going to the UEFA Cup/Europa Cup would be a huge disappointment.

Re: Fox Drew 243,000 TV Viewers For Man Utd v Chelsea Game

One more example of the sport of football growing in America. They have invested too much in him to not give him the chance to fail or succeed. With the three signings so far, and the rumor of Saviola on loan for the remainder of the season, the club is making an effort to improve despite the economic climate and the club's shaky financial situation.

I don't think tonight's game will make that much difference. How we do against the bottom half of the table is much more important. Not only beating teams we need to beat, but denying them points they need to avoid relegation, is important.

Re: Manchester City Left Broken Hearted By Kaka

I personally was thrilled to see him turn the offer down. He makes more money now than he could possibly spend, he plays for one of the most storied clubs in world football, he has the opportunity to compete for prestigious trophies for as long as he stays there, and he's adored by his club's supporters.

At ManCity, he walks into a relegation fight, not much chance of European football next year, the club is looking up at a minimum of 4 clubs that play better and more like 8 or 9, and the club is years away from having any level of prestige comparable to the likes of AC Milan. It would have made no sense, apart from the money, to leave Milan for Manchester.

Re: Manchester City Raise Kaka Bid To £243 Million

I hope Kaka stays in Milan so that he can fulfill his stated dream of growing old there and being the captain someday.

Re: Poll: Is Kaka Going to Manchester City?

Kaka standing up and saying that it's not about the incredible wad of cash they are offering but playing for and being (eventually) the captain of one of the most storied clubs in world football would go a long way to restoring my confidence in athletes.

I really hope he turns them down because he wants to stay at Milan.

Re: ESPN Insider Confirms UK Premier League TV Bid

Does ESPN have problems? Of course. Many problems. But the exposure of ESPN covering the sport, and therefore promoting the sport would be tremendous. I think they would hire the local announcers for the matches and make an honest effort to cover the sport. Would some people on ESPN still ridicule football? Of course. That will never end. They have people who ridicule hockey, yet they still cover it in Sportscenter and various other programs.

ESPN getting the broadcast rights to the EPL or Serie A or La Liga would immediately make those leagues and the sport of Football relevant and visible to everyone in this country. Would it turn us into a footy-crazy nation? No, but it would expose the sport to millions who don't get FSC or Setanta, and the fanbase would continue to grow and expand.

Re: ESPN Insider Confirms UK Premier League TV Bid

Did anyone else notice that ESPNews is showing scores for England, Spain, and Italy in the scroll ticker on the weekend. I'm in the habit of recording games on DVR and watching later, but was at lunch Sunday where I saw the scores and it ruined the results for me. I also saw them discussing the EPL table at one point. I couldn't hear them, but they were displaying the table on the full screen. ESPN(the mother ship) also had a couple of items on their ticker on Wednesday that I read while at the gym.

I would welcome a third network covering world wide football. It would be great for exposure with ESPN cross-promoting the sport on SportsCenter.

Re: John Kerr Interview: Questions Please

Have him tell his story of how he ended up at Pompey and what it was like to play briefly for them. In his first week in Portsmouth, he stated he wanted to play for a big club again someday. Way to endear yourselves to the Fratton Park Faithful! Now, this mess comes out about the transfer back to Spurs. Add to that the rumors of Defoe getting knocked on his butt by David Nugent on the training ground during his final week at Pompey because his teammates were tired of listening to him whine. Oh, and he recovered from the 'flu' quickly enough to pass his physical.

Maybe Ramos got rid of him because he knew what a complete jerk he is?

Re: Defoe Joins The Boomarang Gang

Has Tony Adams quit yet?

Re: 2008: It’s Been One Hell Of A Year

I too enjoyed the trip to Chicago. For ESPN to make this work, they would need to create their own channel and then cross-promote it like they do every other sport they show. A premium channel, such as ESPN Soccer, would be the best way to go.

Re: Premiership Considers Premier League TV

The NFL, NBA, and NHL all have their own league-run cable channels. MLB starts in January and will have the World Baseball Classic. Golf and Tennis both have channels devoted to their sport, but they are not run by any of the organizations such as the PGA or the ATP.

It's a great way to promote the product, but only if you have competent people running the network. I haven't watched much of any of those channels.

I would welcome it, if it increased my access to EPL matches, especially live matches. The side that outworked AC Milan and Aston Villa and ManU? Or the side that, following their manager's body language, quit in the second half last Sunday against Newcastle? Tony Adams seat is getting warmer, and with Paul Ince now gone, he's moving up the table in the Sack Race. He needs some results to prove that he's up to the task. With new ownership coming in eventually, he needs to prove that he can keep us in the top half of the table. A win at Bolton would help us forget that dreadful second half performance against Newcastle.

Re: Premier League Eyes American Soccer Next

I'm all in favor of free admission, especially considering I would have to travel as Atlanta is a football wasteland.
