It sounds like you 'assume' that Stocktwits sentiment will be a contrary indicator - and that somehow if that's how it ended up, it would mean Stocktwits failed.

Not only would a sentiment indicator be a brilliant and natural addition to Stocktwits, it would offer another potential revenue stream. Back in the day firms like fidelity paid clueless loons like Elaine Gazarelli $5 million dollars just to tell them that she 'liked' or 'disliked' the market.

As someone who did much A/B testing for startups over the years, I can assure you that ultimately Stocktwits would be able to correlate some fantastic data. Perhaps the 'recommended' stream would be spot on, while the 'general' stream was a contra indicator (OR VISE-VERSA!). Stocktwits has a large and broad enough group of investors that there would however definably be a correlation. And once the math was done, and the correlation flushed out- that would be actionable by us, the Stocktwits community. Isn't that what Stocktwits is all about.

Still short Stocktwits but long Howard Lindzon :-)

http://twitter.com/A_F

Re: Open APIs and Open Standards

I'm thinking in more simple terms ...that Twitter will REPLACE RSS (the 'S' in RSS should stand for 'sucky' not 'simple'

http://twitter.com/A_F

Re: Why Social Beats Search

Spam touches everything. I project that we will see these type of services thriving within the next 5 years.

http://twitter.com/A_F

Re: Video's Impending Tsunami in Education

Well maybe this thought is on a slightly larger scale, but continuation of a trend - and a new trend as well bode well for your thesis (with which I agree) going forward.

1) There has been a 40 + year correlation between home prices (the majority of one's wealth) and college tuition prices. Though real estate prices have recently undergone a major correction (collapse in some areas) college tuition prices continue their upward march. In a society where most people put their children through school by borrowing against their home - there has been a sudden disconnect. I expect education moving online to be a major trend over the next decade as a result.

2) Moore's law - This applies not only to semiconductors, but all of technology. The cost to move high quality video - to broadcast (2-way) - to anywhere - anytime has and will continue to support a move to HD video online - including this subset - online education.

http://twitter.com/A_F

Re: Gimme Dashboards

Yes dashboards are a *must* but it's too bad that way to many startups have crappy coaches. I get your point (and agree) that social media will be woven into ALL media going forward - don't disagree. At the same time however SoMe will ALWAYS be it's own separate channel at the same time. I will also argue that SoMe ROI can be very easily measured. As just one example, think of a brand using a SoMe chanel PRO-Actively (not *listening* to their customer as all the SoMe pundits tell them - but actually using SoMe to sell a product (demonstrable ROI). It is not only easy, but HIGHLY recommended IMO to offer the customer something of value, that they can not get anywhere else. The pundits can say whatever they want, but what people REALLY want from a brand using SoMe is a deal! Offer them a coupon, a special, something that has monetary value that they can not get anywhere else when shopping for your brand (or considering your brand's competition). That my friend is what get's you (the brand) a highly demonstrable, and accurate ROI.

Separately, as it relates to Seth Godin's *cough* comment - This is an entirely SEPARATE and DIFFERENT use of the same SoMe channel. Best example I can think of as it relates to the 'lifetime' value of a customer is Zappos. Zappos's culture is (was?) embedded in SoMe. So much so that you could not differentiate the two. Many customers of Zappos developed a relationship with the brand as a result = customer loyalty.

Happy Steve? Twitter (let alone Twitter Search) is in the 1st inning. Not only WILL great money be made...It is being made currently ... Just look at unboundtech.com as just one example of mining social data from Twitter and others ... They get anywhere between $3k to $50k a pop from their agency and brand clients ... Now go back to your Twitter search box and search for "Do we really need search alternatives" so you can monitor the buzz your article gets.

http://twitter.com/A_F

Re: Bit.ly Spelled backwards is ‘DEVIL’

Can't believe no-one has figured out Bit.ly's brilliance yet...
