They definitely deserve the Golden Poo award, though the lady who finally helped me sort this out was a very nice older lady from Prince Edward Island in Canada, I'm sure she appreciates the work.

Re: Me == sucker for shiny cars

Yeah - these are all made in Germany, and its my understanding the VW issues were from early ramp-up of their Mexican factories.

The car is beautiful, the turbo is awesome, the drive is a lot of fun.

Hint - you shift into 6th gear somewhere between 75 and 80. We haven't had these items long enough to measure impacts. Even if they are detrimental in some ways, they must be beneficial in others. I general I distrust blanket prognostications such as these without very clear reasons.

Most of all I have faith in the brain developing properly no matter what the heck happens. Different doesn't mean bad. And maybe our brains should get wired differently in this new world we live in.

Re: Confession: data backups

No crash - just noting that I'm not prepared for one. And I should be because I know better. And if I'm not and I know better, then who the heck actually does this regularly enough?

Re: Technology has far to go

Completely agree - wireless networking is the perfect case study in stupidity. Why should humans be subjected to such bad software? It's not home networking if it doesn't work safely, securely, and simply in the average home.

You know what else grinds my gears? Cable companies installing cable modems with a single ethernet cable into the back of a Windows machine. That's like asking for a huge botnet of zombie computers. Why not build a simple NAT router into every cable modem? That must exist for $1, would hardly impact the price. That alone would probably prevent most of the botnets.

Re: Losing A Phone - A Social Media Security Breach?

I use a PIN to secure my iPhone - similar reasons as earlier posters. However, I find it frustrating to enter my PIN nearly every time I open my phone. It would be much cooler to have one of the following:

- a "gesture" that unlocked the phone - could use my muscle memory to do this, wouldn't be much more work than unlocked iPhone swipe, and would be hard for anyone else to replicate

- a "soft lock" system that periodically required the PIN, and shut down access failing to get it. This way you aren't hampered in regular usage, but know that it wouldn't stay open for too long out of your hands. (The iPhone kind of does this, but the delay isn't configurable enough and is too short)

Cooler would be an RFID jewelry piece that synced to the phone and locked it automatically out of range. :-).

Re: Art & photos

Update - still moving the photos over, this is a long annoying process. However there are still some missing features and concerns.

1. Trackbacks. a huge deal, and totally missing.

2. Seamless data portability. Grab all wordpress / blogger comments on setup and create the Disqus comments for these. If I want to leave Disqus, create wordpress / blogger comments so my blog is still complete.

You should win users by being the best, not by being sticky. This is keeping me from converting my personal blog over, though I am experimenting with Disqus on my professional blog.

Re: American Mecca

To be very very clear - I have absolutely loved this vacation - seeing Isaiah and Elias play together was priceless (pics & movies will be posted soon), spending time with Liz, Chris, Uma, Sam and Elias was wonderful as well - we've missed them lots off in Norway. I even enjoyed the entire Disney experience, though honestly more as an observer of a phenomenon. And I enjoyed being reminded of what middle America lives like (and at the same time realizing how well off we all are as Americans).

Re: Trackback support - Please

+1

Another Disqus user voting for this feature!

Re: The Declining Power Of The Firm

I've been thinking a lot about this recently - why do cities exist, if not because they suit the requirements of firms? What would the world look like if people actually did work from their homes or local communities, coming together online in more ad-hoc fashions. This is the world I want to be building in my daily life - to me the drudgery and unpleasantness of commuting to NYC every day just seems so backwards - millions of people have terribly structured lives simply because it has been more efficient to compete as groups in firms.

I love the Coase reference - I appreciate his theories, but have always felt they were more problems to be solved than immutable forces of nature.

Re: Decentralizing work

Update - I wrote this initially as an email to my family dated March 27th 2008 - a few days later there was an excellent blog post on A VC about The Declining Power Of The Firm referencing an HBS blog post referencing Coase.
