It sure would be a shame to see Everton move from Goodison Park, and considering their results the last few seasons I see no need for any such change in ownership/administration.

Newcastle's predicament will probably get worse mainly due to the tough expectations the barcode-fans hold them to. If Michael Owen goes down for another lengthy injury, I could easily see some changes in the works.

Their opening day victory over my Spurs last season was telling of the quality play they are capable of and I expect them to fight for mid-table this year. Their midfield additions will be the key to their success, as both Tainio and Malbranque are workhorses.

Agreed, they look good and they are giving this american Yiddo a lot of confidence going into the season. Ramos said right when he took the job that he wanted the squad to play with 'panache,' and they certainly seem to be playing some sexy football at the moment.

I am more worried about lack of depth at striker, one more capable striker is needed, but I would love to see Tomas Pekhart get some minutes as he looks like the next big thing to come out of our academy.

Ah, remember Arshavin hasn't signed yet and it looks less likely as time goes on. Santos does show promise, but thats still only two attacking players (three if Berbatov stays), spurs need guys on the bench to fill in for UEFA cup duty. Last year we had four quality options, this year not so much and I hope that changes quickly.

I see your point about the back line though, Dawson is a capable fill-in, but apparently only when paired with King, and the only other true CB - Gardner, is gone on loan.

Friedel was solid, but a change of scenery (and management!) can work wonders for Robbo. They might slip a few spots, but they have a winning culture there and should still be a tough opponent (assuming Ince doesnt try to fix what aint broke) - Id guess they'll finish around 7th-8th again this year.

Domestically that would understandably be a significant issue, but abroad the football league easily overshadows cricket (save for those few obvious strongholds - India, Pakistan, etc.) and to that degree wont really interfere.

I suppose technically, its the 'Barclays Premier League,' and the cricket league, assuming it obtains its own sponsorship, would go by another name.

We have been discussing this in the EPLtalk community page but most people seem resigned to the fact that the big four will be intact this year, most likely due to Liverpool's quality signings.

As for that number 5 spot, Portsmouth looks like a quality squad and finally has a capable strike duo, but I am not so quick to count out Everton. Im obviously hoping Spurs push for that #5, but the lack of depth on both front and back lines concerns me.

The way that I took it was that this wasn't a case of Lonnie jumping ship and choosing to latch onto another club (like the majority of american youth do, which pisses me off that I live in a country of bandwagon bettys), but more that he has become disillusioned with the direction ManU has taken/is going - which is understandable.

I think people more so have a problem with the way your new club was chosen, but, hell, it made for interesting journalism!

I am particularly interested in seeing how Jo plays for ManCiteh, a no-name striker from the Russian premier league for 19mil pounds? He must be good, or that crook Thaksin must be desparate.

Dos Santos looks like he will be a quick fan favorite and is already well on his way just by smiling on the pitch and enjoying the game of football, unlike a certain Bulgarian employee. Saying GDS is on level with Berbatov is obviously exaggerating, but his future does certainly look bright.

I am very optimistic about these signings working out because they are all players known for their creativity, when last year the only midfield player who could be deemed even minimally creative was O'Hara, and he didnt even start!

This new crop could score a LOT of goals, assuming another capable attacking option is signed.

As for getting Setanta, I had it on broadband last year (to supplement my basic cable) for $15/mo, and it worked alright. Costs about as much as going to the pub and having a few pints and some food for the game.

True, all of our other midfielders are attack-minded, but Zokora had a horrible run of form at the end of last season - specifically his defensive tackling started to get reckless (see: Drogba's goal in the Carling Cup final). If his defensive ability starts to slide, then he has nothing left to offer since we all know he couldnt bury the ball in an open net if his life depended on it (again, see: Carling Cup final).

I agree with the lineup you proposed, but would sub Jenas for Zokora. Also, look for Benoit Assou-Ekotto to get some quality time.

Either way, it should be a very exciting season for Spurs and im looking forward to the game next saturday.

Owner is an international fugitive, said Owner's wife is due for 3-year jail term, Owner goes behind manager's back to sell two top players, and said manager considers leaving before getting one league match under his belt with Citeh. Yikes.

Yes, the new stadium and the financing that goes with is has really strapped the Gooners, but even without bringing in huge-name talent expected to perform (cough-Shevchenko-cough) Wenger has done a hugely succesful job developing young talent and could have easily one the league last year.

That said, it will be hard to count them out this year, even though L'Pool, Chelski and ManU look to be clearly stronger sides ... on paper. The Young-Goons are talented and are in a winning culture, and that can go a long way.

SF thats exactly what I was going to mention - I would like to see taht sort of mentality applied to EPL matches. In MLB you can argue certain things in certain ways, but if you come out and argue balls and strikes, you WILL be tossed, its just the way it is and everyone knows and accepts it.

It needs to be that way in football, if six players surround the ref and scream in his ear for ten minutes, cards should be flying left and right. It needs to be understood that there is a line, and that line will hopefully be defined early on this season.

After a couple of early-season red cards we might see players start to relax.

The only thing woeful about that USA game was the commentary. It actually really pissed me off when Tim Howard rolled around faking an injury after a striker half-tried to poke the ball out of Howards arms, followed by the color commentator saying "he (the guatemalan striker) is a dirty player...thats dirty, kicks himin the face, yayaya blahhh"

That said, Eddie Lewis' injury was pretty wicked and i was glad to see the official got it right with a stright red card. That was one serious forearm-shiver.

The season has not gotten off to a predicable start by any means and there is a lot of good competition from top to bottom.

Fulham beat Arsenal (and kept a clean sheet), Spurs lose to Middlesboro and Sunderland then turn around to draw Chelsea (at the bridge!), and the list goes on...it is already shaping up to be a very entertaining and one of the most competitive seasons in years.

Simple - Edgar Davids. I loved the way that he played and I tried to mimic his style in my own play (kind of hard to do as a winger), I just thought he played great football. I never really followed european football until he moved to Spurs on a free transfer (before the 2005 season i think?) and when he started playing with Robbie Keane my fate as a Yid was sealed. That kind of work ethic and effort-overpowering-skill ethos drew me in...

My excitement for this season has now been fully deflated - it looks like it is going to be a long winter. Youre right, Woody isnt the guy who should be wearing the armband and frankly I dont know who should - I dont see any natural leaders on the pitch other than Gomes, but the No.1 can only do so much from his box.

Modric and Bent both need to grow a pair and Zokora should be banished from playing in lilywhite.

How predictable, I knew that no matter how the game ended up, be it a defensive struggle ending in a 1-0 win or a 5-4 shootout, the game would result in thousands of media articles saying "(insert losing team) crisis at new low after terrible loss"

The barcodes actually had more chances than Spurs - one shot was cleared off the goal line by Woody - and had more posession, so its not like either team played terribly, Spurs just had better finishing. I just hope that actually winning a game on domestic play can get big MO on Spurs' side.

Good point - Spurs havent had quality central midfield play since the Davids/Carrick pairing and the one possible replacement (Malbranque) was let go...

Comolli needs to go, he is hurting the team badly and recruits duds.
They need to play 4-4-2. If spurs continue to play with 5 in midfield and Roman on an island by himself up top, they wont win a game until february.

And bring up Tomas Pekhart!!! Giving the kid a shot alongside Campbell would definitely result in some goals. Hes a giant and can bring the ball down for a quick finisher like Roman, Bent or Campbell, much like Berba did for Keane.

Agreed...the first guy got it right. A tennis-style confirmation takes less than 5 seconds, so it wouldn't hold up the game.

Something I WOULD like to see, though, is the FAs actually acting on the rediculous diving in the sport by reviewing tape of dramatized tackles and dishing out one game suspensions for the Ronaldo's, Drogba's, and Italian-national-team's of the world. The diving will only get worse unless they start to suspend players for it.

A better way to keep debt under control would be to require a certain amount of available capital before the FA approves the sale of a club. It seems the trend is moving towards the big clubs being bought only with teh helps of monstrous bank loans, and we all know how well that is going at the moment...

Finally some hope...Ramos lost his team, you can only lose so many games before your own players turn against you. There was no chance for improvement if he couldnt even pick a consistent starting XI.

Portsmouth will be fine and will pick up one of the other big name managers that are as of yet unemployed - I wouldnt be surprised if they picked up Allardyce by friday.

Agreed. Im not a huge Redknapp fan but any change is a good one at this point. Im very hopeful for a fresh start and think Harry can crack the whip and get those bumbling idiots figured out eventually.

The results didnt come and Levy thankfully learned from his mistakes and opted for a proven manager of the English game who gets his teams to overachieve. I do take solice in the fact that the business side of the club is still going great, so a solid financial foundation (which could be gone by tomorrow, knowing the current market situation) can be a strong steadying force.

Spurs are only 4 points out of 14th place, but with Arsenal, L'pool and Citeh as their next three league games, it could be a while before they start to climb back up

Dammit, I wish I had seen this earlier. The schedule on the Setanta website had the Spurs replay on at 7 eastern time so I didnt show up at the pub until halftime.

Yeah I went to a pub but showed up at halftime due to the error in their schedule with regard to daylight savings time. Good thing all the fireworks were in the 2nd half!

Agreed, Ive heard it said dozens of times here from other people posting that if the PL would offer a service like GamePlan, NHL Center Ice, etc. it would generate a huge amount of revenue for the league directly.

So what the hell is stopping them? Money in the league's pocket, more international exposure...isnt that exactly what the league has been focusing on the last few years with all the USA and Asia tours?

It most certainly was a very lucky win, and Harry was the first person to acknowledge that fact in his interviews. 'Pool dominated the game in every aspect of the game until that Carragher OG, but thats what made it such a great game to watch.

Now that they have Uncle Mo on their side, it'll be interesting to see how Spurs' form progresses as the get into an easier part of their schedule.

I dont think it matters either way, both teams will go through. Marseille and PSV are 5 points off of both 'Pool and Madrid (3 points for the former two, 8 points for the latter).

I'd probably say Jamie O'Hara. I generally play left wing but spend a lot of time at RW and both outside backs. Not really flashy, just get by with speed, quick cuts and quick diagonal balls.

I think I was a bit more of a bruiser in the back than O'hara is though ; )

Well, no. Form = results = points, this has nothing to do with rankings, its a simple points system. Arsenal didnt have the most points, so they werent the best team.

Anyways, you missed my point completely. Over the past 3 weeks or so, Spurs have had the best run of any team in the league - unbeaten in 6 matches, including TWO wins over Liverpool and managing to bang in 4 goals against Arsenal.

Interesting post - makes perfect sense.

What I think a lot of people are missing is that football is actually hugely popular here as a youth sport (especially here in Wisconsin), so the disconnect is not within the youth systems, but rather with a professional league that has yet to fully develop.

The southern half of the States has the latin/Mexican influence that keeps soccer popular, whereas here in the midwest, the largely German/European heritage has rooted soccer pretty firmly. Now if we just could get the MLS to sprout out to more cities and get more games on national TV, it would only be a matter of time (and good marketing).

I dunno, Gaff. That seems like a hard sell to me. It is an interesting thing to think about, considering that a lot of the top teams do seem to struggle in unison. But as a person who has played competitive football through college, I dont really buy that watching the other scorelines has that big of a psychological effect. Sure, everyone gets some pre-game jitters, but once the whistle blows all you are thinking about is getting a good first touch/first pass and getting a hard first tackle.

When I heard that it was the biggest snowfall in London in the last 18 or so years, I was expecting some huge amount, but apparently it was only 8 inches. It is a bit puzzling how 8inches of snow can cripple a city, but for an area that doesn't have 1.) A large snow-plow fleet, or 2.) Anywhere to plow said snow, you can see why this is a bigger deal for them than 8" would be for me here in Wisconsin.
