You can try holding down Alt and typing in 0174 for ® and Alt + 0169 for © etc... just use the character map (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character map) and you should be able to view the code for the symbol at the bottom left corner of the window..

<ul id="quote"><h6>TONY_N wrote:</h6>if i accidentally hit New String. how do I change it to Boolean? or does it not matter thanks.</ul>

In order to remove any preference from the about:config area (in this case the string) just right click (or control click) on it and hit 'Reset' and just restart Firefox. It is going to remove the string. Then just add in the correct boolean.

It doesn't really matter anyways, but if it is causing problems then you might want to remove the string.

in How to patch up your UXtheme.dll file in XP home or pro | Windows | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
Well, there are a lot of places where you can find .msstyles (these are just the visual style part of any theme) files a lot but its a little hard to find a .theme file as well, but most people who create great msstyles do usually include a theme file but it's not guaranteed.

Anyways, you can find lot of different styles at deviantart.com (under visual styles section usually), winmatrix (wallpapers mainly), themexp.org and wincustomize.

If you don't find a .theme file then you can always make your own assortment of themes (basically put together your style and desktop background and advanced settings for the theme and click the 'Save as' button under the 'Themes' tab in the display properties window).

Well... sorry Waquar, I don't have the Vista theme. Having KoL's Vista theme is considered Warez. Which means that it is illegal to distribute it in any way. And it is also illegal to have it.

But fortunately only Kol's theme was brought down by Microsoft, but there are still many others that are available. Plese take a look at http://www.tech-recipes.com/modules.php?name=Fo.... You should be able to find themes that are strikingly similar ;)!

Thanks! Yeah many find this useful, and are actually impresed how easy the gloss effect can be, of course you need a little bit of photoshop experience to know what I am talking about, but other than that it's pretty simple.

Many professionals seem to use this a lot, however in different styles though, to make many web pages look great. So I hope now people can make their website look great as well.

in MSN Messenger (msnim) Hyperlink Command Codes | Internet | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
Um.. Actually the I believe latest version of MSN messenger is Windows Live Messenger (or Version 8 ). The Windows Live messenger is still under beta stages (or should I say heavy beta) however if you go to the MSN Messenger Download page (http://messenger.msn.com/Xp/Default.aspx) , you will realize that if you click on download you will download version 7.5 (check the title of the page, if you aren't sure what I mean).

And if you open up MSN messenger recently it will ask you to update it, so chances are that you might have the updated client though.

However the funny thing is that if you search on google for msn messenger the first result shows version 7.0 but if you go to that page, you will notice that it is 7.5.

You can use greasemonkey userscripts to do that if you want... but only if you are using Firefox though. You should be able to find one if now you could make one up yourself.

in XP: Get Updates No Matter What or Change your Invalid Product Key | Windows | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
If I am correct you only need to download the tool if you pick the manual method while getting the 'Genuine Windows Downloads stuff' (or something like that.. I don't know what it was called). So basically what you do is download the little utility, and install it and then a window pop's up telling you your OS's id and then you just past that code in your browsers window.
If you are talking about this then you don't need it, you can just bypass it. No harm if you download it, but it's just unnecessary, and I also believe it doesn't have any outgoing connection or anything like that so that's not a problem either.

Yeah this one has been patched up apparently, just recently. They've apparently updated the add-on. And now you can no longer disable it, though the manage-add ons section.
So this is pretty much one of the the only ways right now.

in Using your keyboard as a mouse by using MouseKeys | Windows | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
It's nice to see that this recipe might be helpful... but PCurd you are right, this recipe is not going to work on laptops (might work on the 17' laptops with the numpads).

I just though that this recipe might help people with wireless mice. Usually for me the battery runs out just when I need it the most and I can't finish my project or something like that, so this really helps me out when I'm too lazy to move from where I am to access my USB mouse (even though it is already plugged in).

By the way those bumpy things (hehe, do they even have a technical term?) are really hard to use... I tried one of them and it was totally hard to control the pointer... may be I'm just not 'skilled' enough to use it?

Getting close there with the bypass. In all of those add-ons, I can choose to enable/disable all of them EXCEPT the WGA validation tool. It just fades and i can't click it. Instead there's a little message saying, "only the system administrator can change this." I am the system administrator!

Any new ideas? or must this machine stop?

Well, it could be that you aren't in the right account, or you've just downloaded the patch that Microsoft realeased. If you've gone to update.windows.com lately, you might have downloaded the patch, which prevents the Windows Genuine Advantage tool to be disabled... like people above said Microsoft might come up with a solution, and apparently they have found a soulution...

Sounds like the file isn't all right. It's probably a corrupt file. I've seen windows give similar errors usually for .exe installer files. Perhaps you could try a different version of the same file, or try downloading it again...

in How to Rip/Copy Music (from Music Videos, MP3s WMAs, OGGs etc) for Free | Windows | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
If you are like me and time is not a luxury you can afford then why waste your time creating a long wave file, right?

That's why I just uploaded a 10 minute wav file. You can get it here (sorry had to use rapidshare so that I won't kill the tech-recipes server by using up too much bandwidth). It's zipped because the original file is just too big...

Hope this helps the people out who don't want to waste their time creating a long wave file ;)

[note: I don't know what rapidshare does with uploaded files so, please make sure that you check the file for viruses etc before you start using it...]

Okay to make a wave file refer to http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips1117.html...

To make it easier for you here's how to do it:

1. Click on Start
2. All Programs
3. Accessories
4. Entertainment
5. All programs
6. Sound Recorder
7. Now click on the button with the brown circle
8. Sound recorder will record stuff till 60 seconds then stop recording, then press the record button again
9. Keep pressing the record button untill the file is as long as you want it to be
10. File > Save As...

Now you have a .wav file (an empty one)... for all your recording needs

Hope this helps

<ul id="quote"><h6>screech wrote:</h6>great, thanks for this. what would the code be if i wanted to search say for all PDF files with 'eBook' or 'EPSON' in the title for example.. or all mp3's with say 'maria' in the filename?.</ul>

Try this to find PDF files with 'eBook' or 'EPSON'... here are a few that you can try...

filetype:pdf intitle:eBook site:website.com
filetype:pdf intitle:EPSON site:website.com
filetype:pdf allintitle:eBook site:website.com
filetype:pdf allintitle:EPSON site:website.com

Obviously you need to change "website.com" to the website that you want to search in or get rid of the whole 'site:website.com' part... there are other possibiliies as well so just read the recipe to find out how you can mix and match search terms to get the best result possible.

As for the mp3 just read over the recipe... here's an example you can try

+inurl:mp3 site:rapidshare.de maria

Hope this helps

Well, I don't have a list of sites right now, but I'll try to put together one soon. Right now you can use this on a lot of tech sites like I said above...

<ul id="quote"><h6>bugmenot wrote:</h6>Hi,
The "general.useragent.extra.firefox" isn't on the list of preferences for my firefox. Is there a reason for this, and is there another way for me to get it to work, or should I just download it??</ul>

If you don't see the "general.useragent.extra.firefox" in the preference name then you probably have an older version of firefox. Just get the newer version from mozilla.com. I don't think there is another way to get this to work without downloading the extension. I think is it better to download the extension, this might help you switch back to the default user agent quicker.

Hope this helps :D

in Firefox: Changing User Agents to Get Access to Extra Content | Internet | Tech-Recipes on Tech-Recipes
<ul id="quote"><h6>spoonmonger wrote:</h6>How many websites does this work for? Or more specifically, which type of website does this work for?</ul>

Well... I'm not sure how many websites this trick works for because things are always being changed.

As for your second question, this trick works for a lot of tech websites where you need member subscription. For example windowsitpro.com . Mainly this trick works on websites that have a better search rating or wan't bots like the google bot to look at the complete content of the site.

So as a general rule I would say that if you do a search on say google and one of the top queries listed has what you are looking for... you click on that link and go to that site but that site doesn't have what google says it has then try changing your user agents and trying again... chances are you will be able to see the content that is only ment for subscribers and bots ;)

Hope this answers your question...
