in Digital Permanence: Death & Data on dougbelshaw.com
Books go out of print, acid free paper is expensive, digital formats change and become unreadable. You could dump your data every week and entrust it to Ben, updating to the latest format and media as you go. Or you could hope that your best ideas are borrowed and live a life of there own (information wants to be free;-)).

I think bringing up Ben as a kind of 'digital custodian' is a fantastic idea, John! ;-)

in What to do when you can’t be RSSed… on dougbelshaw.com
Hi Doug,
I am a desktop reader fan, now on netnewswire a mac app. Since getting an iPhone and the netnewswire app for it I found i can go through a lot of my feed pretty quickly on the train to and from work. I don't really rwad the posts fully on he phone but add interesting ones to my clippings folder, these sync t o my desktop app for further perusal.

The problem is, John, that I use 3 different laptops on a daily basis, plus my iPhone. Having Feedly on my two own laptops plus using Google Reader on my iPhone keeps everything organized well. :-)

I really liked the way you describe working with pupils like this. Last session I did a similarly motivating project with some primary children using comic life:
http://www.sandaigprimary.co.uk/classes/primary...
Took a long time but the experience of success kept the pupils on task.

Your project was definitely one of the inspirations for my using animations in maths. Thank you :-)
We have comic life on desktops in East Lothian now, so comics may be our next activity.

When I am in that mood, I just keep twitter shut, don't check my mail, ignore my favourites and I don't have a homepage anyway. A couple of hours later I emerge, dazed and dazzled remembering the internet is bigger and stranger that I can know.

in Scotedublogs Data on Jonesieblog
Hi Robert,
I agree about reading stats, but he more data the better.
http://www.scotedublogs.org.uk/stats
is also interesting, although I often forget to check it. There is a nice teachmeet sett peak in the daily post graph. The out of school hours posts still outnumber the ones made during the school day, which surprises me, I though we would see pupil blogging creating a daytime bulge.

Wouldn’t you feel a bit weird if you were told tomorrow that you were going to work for someone but that in your work you would be unable to use any of your personal username/passwords, and would instead have to operate online with a new identity?
no that sounds quite familiar;-) I can't access any email accounts other than my school on at school.

On the button with this one, but you can see why twitter and some newspapers use tinyurl.
I'd never use it on a a blog or web page.

Worried never, but it is nice to have a backup;-)
Certainly rss would make more sense, they seem to be using a 3rd party rss javascript widget for that.
The blog or wiki embedding is just a frame so you could use any webpage. I guess ethically you would need to have permission to display a webpage, rss being designed for distribution is less problematic as I see it.

Yes Robert,
compared to a secure and loving home, school with all ict bells and whistles is just gravy.
I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the difference between the best and worst teaching would only have a small effect on a child's reading ability. I imagine everything else is the same. How we get this simple need answered in society, is not so simple though.

Hi Robert,
I think your second remark is what I take from the article.
Sounds like lack of training and planning were at the heart of at least some of the problems.
There was a nice bit about 1-1 in geek!ed! - episode 0069.

I am waiting for my web hosting request too.
It looks like the web part and streaming media can be made fully public. Might be a useful alternative to often blocked youtube and google video for hosting large files on school websites and avoiding bandwidth problems.

Hi Robert,
I feel as if i am in the same 'lurking' zone too much of the time. One link leads to another and you are lost in wikipedia;-)
Then I end up spending far to much of my 'heads down/on fire time' producing things that will never see the light of day or even get finished. Some of this has to do with the crossover between work and obsession/play, some to do with biting off more than I can chew.
I saw an idea somewhere (heh) that to increase efficiency you should turn your computer on and work without reading emails for the first hour, when I add rss/web pages to that at least I get a good start in the 'head down' sector.
Hopefully scotedublogs.org.uk will help to make the lurking/reading more efficient and less time consuming too.
