It blocks the spams by ip and links, and also if the spambot uses HTML entities to try to get past keyword-filtering systems. See the details for the matching criteria on Dave's blog -- it's pretty complex!

Jérôme: Gosh, you're right. Believe me or not, I absolutely hadn't realized (well, remembered) that ViaBloga was not free. I was given a test account quite early on...

I'm not sure what I would have done that if I had realized it earlier on. If I do TypePad, then I should do Radio, the LiveJournal paid version, and God knows how many countless others. Let me think about that.

I'll modify the post to add a warning and explanation about ViaBloga, but not just right now after 5 hours sleep.

Si je peux me permettre, je trouve que forcer à choisir une catégorie pour l'annuaire lors de l'inscription n'est pas une bonne chose. Cocher une case "blog adulte" si c'en est un, ok, mais une des forces d'une bonne plateforme de weblogs, c'est de rendre l'inscription la plus facile possible. Devoir se catégoriser dans l'annuaire, pour certaines personnes, ça va être difficile ("euh je sais pas ce que je vais mettre sur mon blog") et ça risque d'être le pas de trop qui fait qu'ils renonceront à l'inscription.

Lorelle: first thing you need to know is that Batch Categories is not a "real" plugin. The plugin file (batch-access.php) was provided as a convenient way to offer a link to the extra admin screen I provide (batch-categories.php). If I were to recode this now (and it's somewhere on the to-do list), I would indeed integrate it more with the existing admin interface.

The file you really want is batch-categories.php (don't worry about the other one). Just drop it in your wp-admin directory, then point your browser to it (something like http://example.com/wp-admin/batch-categories.php).

I'm not sure if it'll work in 1.5 -- I haven't tried. Be really careful to back up your database if you do so, and let me know the result!

Izo: that would be it. I doubt the plugin hooks I use to add fields in the "write" page exist in 1.2. One exciting feature of the upcoming 1.5 is precisely to allow plugin writers to mess with admin pages!

Oh! I know what the problem is. You're using excerpts in your feed. Switch to "full posts" for feeds and your tags will get indexed. I'll try to provide a fix for that in the next version.

Martine, you could try to lay your hands on a copy of "Do Cats Need Shrinks" http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/028399... -- it has great advice about getting cats to socialize and accept each other (and on top of that, it's very funnily written).

Another place I found good kitty behavioural advice is http://www.perfectpaws.com/ -- can't remember if they have anything particular on the subject, but I suppose they should, just have a look around.

En gros, IDN permet l'utilisation de caractères utf-8 dans les URL. Cet exploit utilise la ressemblance graphique de certains caractères pour envoyer l'utilisateur sur un autre site que celui qu'il imagine. Dans le "proof of concept" publié par le groupe Shmoo, le premier "a" de "paypal" est remplacé dans l'URL par un caractère dont la forme graphique ressemble à s'y méprendre à un "a" normal, mais qui est en fait un autre caractère.

Delete the file and download it again. I made a small modif (commented out the line which was creating a problem). It should work now, although you will have to enter the "tags" manually using the "custom field" interface on the posting page.

En réaction au commentaire de Flippy: j'ai tendance à exprimer ma pensée souvent de façon un peu plus radicale que ce que je voudrais, et ton commentaire me donne l'impression que c'était peut-être le cas. Une ou deux précisions supplémentaires, donc. De façon générale, les "couacs" dont j'ai eu à me plaindre ne proviennent pas des personnes avec lesquelles j'ai intéragi directement.

Pour Le Temps, par exemple, la journaliste qui m'a interviewée n'était pas au courant que mon interview a été coupé. Si je considère que quelqu'un a commis une "erreur" ou une "indélicatesse", c'est plus la personne qui a pris la décision de couper (en l'absence de la journaliste!) et ne m'en a pas informé. Selon toute vraisemblance, si nous n'avions pas été dans une situation un peu "spéciale" (journaliste en vacances), ceci ne serait pas arrivé.

Pour Journal Infime, je tiens à préciser que je trouve que Martine Galland m'a très bien comprise dans l'ensemble. Le glissement de contexte que je relève est un détail. Passer de "pourquoi je décortique les articles sur les weblogs" à "pourquoi j'écris sur le net" (même si ce dernier point est exprimé sous la forme "pourquoi je partage ma vie sur le net", une formule qui à mon sens détourne un tout petit peu le sens de ma démarche -- mais encore, on parle ici de nuances) ne me semble pas totalement outrageux. Et même, lorsque j'ai écrit le présent billet, je me suis prise à me demander s'il n'était pas légitime de faire un rapprochement entre la problématique "famille à secrets" et mon écriture "publique", même si ce n'était pas dans ce sens-là que j'en parlais à la base.

Pour ce qui concerne le présent "déluge médiatique" autour de ma petite personne, ben... effectivement. Je ne m'en plains pas, et je suis d'accord avec toi quand tu dis qu'il y a en Romandie d'autres voix pertinentes que la mienne. Ne t'en fais pas, je suis sûre que la presse aura assez vite fait le tour de ce que j'ai à dire, et que je me retrouverai bientôt aux oubliettes :-)

On devrait peut-être mettre sur pied une ressource pour journalistes, genre "richesses de la blogosphère romande"? (Je suis sérieuse, hein.)

Pour le "bravo", effectivement, ça donne l'impression que paraître à la télé est un peu la "consécration" du weblogueur. Je pense que c'est en partie dû au fait que si on écrit sur Internet, c'est qu'il y a en nous (au moins caché quelque part) un désir d'être reconnu par le monde (au sens général). Les médias offrent une forme de reconnaissance. Comme à mon sens un des buts derrière l'écriture publique est justement de l'ordre de la reconnaissance, une apparition médiatique est perçue comme un succès.

Mais je te rassure, ce n'est pas pour ça que j'écris ;-)

Actually, the "batch-access" part of Batch Categories is not necessary and just makes access to the page easier (batch categories is not actually a plugin, in a sense that it does not use any API hooks; it's just a standalone page which allows you to mess with the database).

You can try accessing batch-categories.php directly by typing the address of the file in your browser. I am really not sure if it will work or not with 1.5 -- so if you do try it, please:

a) back up your database
b) let me know how it went

I will be converting Batch Categories into a real 1.5 plugin at some point, but I just have too much other stuff to deal with now.

I'm really sorry to hear the plugin doesn't work with 1.5.

As I might have mentioned, I'm swamped right now. If nobody does it before me, I'll adapt it to 1.5 at some point. If anybody feels like doing it, just go ahead! I really don't care if it's me or somebody else who writes the 1.5 version of Batch Categories.

I'm personally very hesitant about teens and kids spending large parts of their "learning life" inside virtual environments (be they gaming or second-life-like). One of the things about growing up is getting to grips with reality, and accumulating learning experiences in interactive environments which are not reality strikes me as potentially unhealthy.

I'm not saying kids shouldn't do this kind of stuff -- but the impact on their development if abused of is a huge question mark for me. Anybody else (particularly people with psy/educator backgrounds) got opinions on the subject?
