The story broke on a bike message board, and was being addressed by the company. Good PR in anyone's book.

When they found the problem, they researched it, and fixed it, all the while replacing old locks. There have always been superstar PR people that spent as much time (or more) promoting their firm or themselves. At the O'Dwyer event, I met a three-person team whose only responsibility was the promotion of their PR firm and its founder (and, not doing that well at it, either).

You were in the book for your kick-ass work on English Cut, but you are aren't a shameless self-promoter. You could have linked to it, and this was the first real mention of it. After much thought, I linked to the Edelman/Intelliseek report, and still plan on posting about it, but in a bigger picture sense of the other PR blogs out there that have great things to say.

Blogs have just brought out the new level of publicist that used to respond to Profnet queries for anything and everything, but now they blog for recognition. A great quote this week was that a PR person had clients to pay for his Profnet habit. Now, some people have clients to pay for their blogging habit.

Re: Somehow I can’t feel like I’m cutting edge anymore

Did you take the call?

Re: Interesting article alert

PR should own more than just WOM. Here they are running around giving advice to PR firms and organizations, but with what PR background? Sometimes, it is to smooth out the rough corners, because during a television interview, do you really want to hear the vocal pauses - hmm, yeah, umm - throughout? It's about training the mind to think quietly, and then speaking. That is not all bad.

Of course, there is the flipside of someone being so polished, that they seem like they are a robot. Worked with someone like that, whose clips were never used because he had absolutely no vocal pauses. Then again, someone recently noted that when I speak, I tend not to use contractions - I just think it's because I'm odd.

Re: More English Cut

Interesting and good interview, but what's with the bad, fake London accent? His big announcement is that they got funding - another dotcom mentality press release. What is the value there? Don't tell me you got funding, I don't care who the team is - especially if you are sending it out as a press release. Just let me know your product works, why it is so different that I have to have it, and why I should switch my photos from Ofoto and Flickr to Tabbloo (which, seems not too different from HeyPix and Phanfare and Snapjot, IMHO).

Yes, launch - just launch without the big hurrah that really isn't needed. It says nothing much, but takes a long time saying nothing.

Plus, customers are customers. Users are users. Consumers - her bad word choice - are people we just take money from and don't listen to. One thing I can say about blogging and reaching out to bloggers is that it has changed my pitch letter - which tend to be bullet points and short. I save the long stuff for my blog.

As for the cluetrain reference in his post, nice to talk the talk (which in a 30-second bit on the book means just use common sense), but you can't claim you're a small outfit that's just seven people (very Web 2.0 to be small, natch) when you go out and hire a PR firm that is more than just one consultant.

Oh, and there are no major funding announcements in Web 2.0 - that's a relic of the dotcom era.

Re: Get out of the way

Thank heavens that there's no one like that in the PR blogosphere, and none of us try to get press for ourselves over our clients' best interest.

Re: We’re not cool

Well, that's not really a bad thing, IMHO.

Re: Where ya been?

Okay, considering Ketchum has eKetchum, this is just odd. Well, so am I, been on it longer than most people, and still know enough to know that I don't know everything.

You know what Paul - they were usually so full of shit and wrong, they would potentially hurt both the client AND the agency. Now, go sit down in the corner and realize that you are still a student in media, PR and life. As we all are.

Oh, and my excuse for being on blogspot is that my blog is 4 1/2 years old now. What's yours?

Re: When I was your age, Pluto was still a planet

Paul, you speak in circles, and not even well. And, that's just sad.

You bring very little value to the table because you do not understand the past, nor seem to have much grasp of the present or future. You failed to address the question about Blogspot, your MySpace page reeks of unprofessionalism (yes, there is a separation between public and professional lives), and you have yet to showcase your knowledge of social media in any substantial way.

You can whine about these old men writing books on social media. Well, you can certainly talk a good game - can you highlight what you have done with your firm, or for Marketwire? Yes, there are people complaining about the lack of diversity at conferences but is that a reflection of the environment, or the lack of outreach by the conference.

But, just to get diversity, should we invite people that are "diverse" just to point to them and say "hey, lookie, we are diverse" and the people are just not qualified to speak? I hope not, but the knee-jerk reaction is probably so.

Yes, there are many, many qualified women to speak in the Bay Area and Valley. Tim O’Reilly is a guy who really can affect one’s career online (and off, too). I do have to admit that I feel some pressure just to get on board here and that makes me feel very uneasy.

I allow anonymous comments, partially because I have students that come and comment and don't really know these supposed rules of blogging. If someone attacks me, I ignore or delete (per my sidebar on comments).

If Tim does use his power to force others into it, well, that will just suck and ruin a lot of what blogging is supposed to be about. And, well, I'm ignoring the whole Western / US-centric mindset to the argument.

Re: Code of conduct or not?

Well, this is also why I keep Twittering about the hypocrisy out there. Lists help people keep things in order. And we like order.

Yes, this is a tech list - and lists are not bullshit, despite others claim - but it still is a measuring stick of influence. One that is important and valuable to a lot of various people. Robert, she wouldn't have had you come to AZ if you weren't high on that list. ;)

And while Twitter has value, the downside to Twitter is that the very stupid stuff gets buried. You stick your neck out on your blog, people notice it. You Twitter something interesting, odds are it's going to get buried or die. Or, well, get erased before becoming part of the Google cache.

One last thought - while the A list might be insufferable at times, it is a ranking of influence for certain areas. But each space has its own A-list, and those are the people that are passionate about products, spaces, services, etc.

Re: Web 2.0 summit Twittercast

I know - I love it.
