in Top 50 Widgets for Nokia N97 Competition Posted - I’m In! on The Nokia Blog
Thanks for the link, Mark. I was rather annoyed to see how confusing it is to vote, really. There's nothing that prompts you to scroll to find the 'Save my vote' (or whatever it says) button, you just kind of have to find it. The same thing with the captcha. I wonder how many votes are lost because of that?

in Nokia Messaging Updated - Yawn… Still No HTML Support on The Nokia Blog
Did you read the full announcement? It's stated that the HTML supporting version of Nokia Messaging *will* be available to everyone, and not specifically limited to the E75 and E55.
Quote: The E75 and E55 feature our first clients that include support for HTML, but don’t worry, we are close to our next release for older devices that includes support for HTML.

in Nokia 5800 For North America Arriving Feb. 26th for $399 on The Nokia Blog
Great news, but that's kinda lame that it's $399, when the Euro version is $350 at the flagship stores. What's with the $50 premium for a phone that should have been launched months ago? Bad form, Nokia.

Anyone know when this will be available on Rogers canada? And for some reason the ebay prices are still ridiculuos
Mark Guim
I was surprised about the price too, expecting retail of $350.

in Why Is Xenon Flash Missing on Nokia N97? on The Nokia Blog
@Schattenwand - if you're comparing the Dual-LED still performance to the Xenon, then yes. However, that's inaccurate. The debate is, starting with the single-LED flash that we're used to, which is a better upgrade: Xenon or Dual-LED. That's where my argument is based - Xenon is only for still photos (by its nature, Xenon cannot function as a video light) whereas Dual-LED provides a better flash than single LED, *AND* it offers benefits to video capture that a single LED doesn't.

in Why Is Xenon Flash Missing on Nokia N97? on The Nokia Blog
Interesting stuff, though as I've mentioned before at Symbian-Guru.com, another consideration, aside from *only* the image capture, is the overall image+video performance of the device.
With a Xenon flash, sure you get great stills, but there is no benefit to the video capture. However, with Dual-LED flash, you get an improvement to the stills capture (over single-LED flash), but you also get a great improvement with video capture.
Also, the N97, as you mention, is clearly not the new video flagship - it's also not the new imaging flagship, either. In fact, Tuomo, one of the product managers for the N82, is also one of the product managers for the N97. I had the chance to ask him about that, and he said that the N82 is still Nokia's flagship imaging device, and the N97 simply wasn't designed to dethrone it.

@Ricky, In a world of Innov8 and an 8MP phone coming to AT&T carrier subsidized, that's a sad thing to hear. It's akin to saying "we give up on phone cameras".
I realize it is very difficult to get phone cameras to compete realistically with the cheapest digital cameras, but the tech is getting better and why not be at the forefront being the world's largest maker of mobile phones?
Nokia tends to forget that's what they are. They like to pretend they are a software and services company now. This is a company that took 5 years to make its PC Suite stable and reliable. They are deluding themselves.
Keep the hardware on the cutting edge and many of use will forgive your lapses in buggy software.

in Walkie-Talkie application, over Bluetooth - a RobK idea on Mobile Industry Review
I have to say, I'm somehow completely missing why this would be even remotely useful. Given that Bluetooth typically has a range of ~30 feet, and in real-world scenarios, even falls short of that, I don't really see why you wouldn't just step a bit closer to the person, or talk a bit louder.

I completely agree. Bluetooth is _intended_ to be short-range. By definition it's the wrong technology to use for this purpose.

in LG Renoir only plays music alphabetically on Mobile Industry Review
Ah, I wasn't aware that the track order was recorded anywhere (other than the back of the CD case, obviously). That makes sense, then. I wonder, how do other phones fare? This is something I've never noticed before (as again, I think albums are complete silliness). Do Nokias?

ceepan
The track number is stored in the TRACK field of the ID3 tag information. If you think that albums are complete silliness then fair enough but anybody else that wants to listen to albums is going to get rather annoyed when they are played in the incorrect order, e.g. the last few songs on Abbey Road.

in LG Renoir only plays music alphabetically on Mobile Industry Review
I'm interested as to how you might recommend they 'fix' this. I.e. how would the phone be able to know the proper album order?
We'll just ignore the fact that the whole premise of 'albums' is ridiculous and out-dated, along with 8-tracks and cassette tapes. ;)

The basic answer, Ricky: if it does it on my iPhone, it should do it on the Renoir. The track order is usually integrated into the audio file.

Rest assure I would do the same if I get myself over to your lil corner of the world, and that's my plan in a near future!

Does the 6230 count as 'old' yet? Hands down the best mobile phone this decade, I think I ended up owning a total of 3, after I'd sell one I'd end up buying it again later.

in Firmware Upgrade available for the E90 Communicator on Mobile Industry Review
Ewan - we've discovered that the update breaks compatibility with BlackBerry Connect, so if you use that, you may want to hold off.
Also, if you run into trouble getting the update to go properly, try backing up your phone, and then hard resetting it (*#7370#). That helped me out, and the E90 doesn't have UDP, so you'd basically have a formatted phone after the update anyways.

in Nokia gets into IM by buying OZ Communications on Mobile Industry Review
Why would carriers *not* want to have a full-featured IM client installed out of the box? Most of them already have that, as evidenced by OZ's currently partnerships. If nothing else, this will benefit consumers and carriers, because consumers with unbranded devices will now have an easily-justified reason to spring for that higher data package - out of the box.

in Nokia Email Application (beta) - Works Great But No N82 Love? on The Nokia N82 Blog
Good to know that the N95 version works fine on the N82, I was disappointed a few weeks ago when I decided to use my N82 for a while, and didn't think to try the N95 version.
I'm also fascinated at the mention of a new release - wish Davis would come back with an estimated timetable. I'd also like to see the inclusion of Sync on Ovi support built-in. THAT would be killer.

Yeah Ricky, the N95 version works just fine. Only problem I've seen since installing is the occasional restart. Maybe once ever two days this happens. I'm sure a real N82 version will fix this.
Wow Ricky the Ovi Sync support would be wonderful. I hadn't ever thought of that.

in Nokia isn’t releasing a touch-screen smartphone on Mobile Industry Review
I have to say I completely disagree, on several points:
1. If it runs S60, it's a smartphone, regardless of the featureset. To argue otherwise is to say that any other phone running S60 is not a smartphone, which is completely silly. It would be accurate to say it's not a flagship smartphone, sure.
2. According to the rumored spec sheet, it has roughly the same features as the Nokia N78. Would you also argue, then, that the N78 is not a smartphone?
3. While I think we can all agree that Nokia's first foray into a touchscreen smartphone since the 7710 is likely to be a disaster in terms of user experience, I think it's rather irresponsible to completely disregard it before it's even been made official.

in Review: Solar Cell Phone Charger by Daylight Savings on The Nokia Blog
Is this one able to charge the phone while the phone is in use? One thing I love about the Proporta (aside from having 3x the capacity) is that I can keep using my phone (email, Jaiku, camera, etc) while it's charging, and it will still take on more charge than it's sucking down.
Or do you need to leave the phone alone while it's charging off this one?
(I hope that question makes sense)

Not sure how to accurately test that out so I’ll give an example usage:
At the airport 2 days ago, I was browsing the web with one bar of battery life on 3G connection while connected to the charger for about 20 minutes and it bumped the battery by only one bar.
At home last week, an empty Nokia N82 not running anything was charged about 5 of 7 bars after 45 minutes then I disconnected because I had to leave.

in The Ultimate Mobile Email System: Does it exist? on Mobile Industry Review
The best overall solution, imo, is a combination of 2 Google setups - the downloadable java app and your E90 (or whatever other device's) built-in email client. I use Gmail IMAP and on all of my S60 phones, I get near-push (within seconds) email with minimal fuss, and it doesn't kill the battery on either my N95-3 or the N82 (the latter on EDGE, of course).
You would still want the downloadable client to be able to easily a quickly search through your entire Gmail archives pretty-instantly, but for just typical sending/receiving, the regular IMAP works best.
What is it about IMAP that you don't like? It's instant, and it keeps things in sync, so if you read it on your phone, it's marked read when you get to your desk. Brilliant.
