Some of the most excellent people I have ever met shared this winning attitude. They were often highly focused, eccentric, and full of energy. Most people thought they were just plain odd, but in their own minds they were doing exactly what they wanted -- realizing their dreams. It's finding this balance between taking risks and being able to survive them that is so hard to live by. I think Rocky said it best in that it's not how hard you can hit, but how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. I can hear his barely comprehensible monologue right now in my head...

Re: The iPhone: A Serious Business Device?

I think your assumptions are well grounded, but revisiting this topic (now) months later, I believe that the iPhone's sheer mass appeal has it penetrating the business sector in substantial numbers.

The iPhone is excellent, and actually the best, at web surfing. This feature is quickly becoming the most important aspect for smartphones. Apple's slick mobile browser and next-generation (compared to its competitors) touch interface has given them a decided advantage at keeping this lead for the foreseeable future (at least +1 year IMO).

Sure, lacking a physical keyboard will always make e-mail more cumbersome on the iPhone, but will it be enough to keep people from buying into its coolness factor? Looks like it hasn't.

Furthermore, as more and more businesses experiment and switch to Apple notebooks and desktops, it sort of produces a halo effect for the brand, although in this case it's in the opposite direction than has traditionally been the case.

Re: New MacBooks shipping all around us, unseen?

Hi Ben,

The MacBook Pro line isn't disappearing anytime soon. Apple has invested too much into that brand and their customers expect a 'professional line' regardless if this distinction is worthy or not. For reference, look at the iPod line. Apple likes to distinguish their various offerings. Don't expect a consolidated product line anytime soon.

Re: Apple 3G iPhone Issues: Finger Pointing

I say vote with your money. I wanted an iPod Touch last year, but at the time they had a high proliferation of screen defects. I didn't buy one. Then the Macbook Air came out, and I still haven't bought one because the cooling is worse than an Xbox 360!

I think the problem is, we want these new Apple products so badly. When I visit the Apple forums they are full of loyalists who have things on order despite knowing that there are flaws in the current production run of whatever they are buying. This gives Apple the leeway to rush products to the market and use its base of early adopters to beta test whatever they are releasing. You can't really blame Apple if their customers are willing to take the hits.

I know I won't be buying an iPhone 3G, at least in Canada, where there's a mandatory 3-year contract. I mean seriously, do they expect me to be using the same phone in 2011? Will it even hold a charge?

Re: Apple 3G iPhone Issues: Finger Pointing

The whole 3G reception issue really bothers me. Everyone would like to thing that it's the software at fault, but there's at least a couple rumors saying that it's the hardware, which would explain the rather slow and reluctant response by Apple. I remember when the iPod Touch came to market. Many of them had a terrible viewing angle problem. At first, Apple did what all other consumer product companies do: they denied the problem, even suggesting that it was supposed to be that way! Then, they suggested that they could remedy the issue with tweaking the contrast/brightness settings on the device. Finally, an engineer on some forum explained the issue fully and chalked it up to shoddy QC during the screen cover manufacturing. Apple eventually gave in and offered replacement units (most likely refurbs).

Don't even get me stared about the iPhone 3G's case cracking phenomenon!

Re: Movie Notes: Tropic Thunder

RDJr. is on fire right now! I can't wait to check out this flick just to see his performance. It's a shame that Hollywood comedies are such a hit-and-miss affair. I guess it's a very difficult art form. Stiller has made his career with movies like this, but a lot of them feature the kind of unsophisticated, dumbed down humor that fails to entertain me.

Re: Welcome to the McCain Clinic, Where You Have No Options

I saw the video when it first came out, and although it'd pretty commical, it's a very possible glimpse at what the future may hold. There's so much election fraud, it's difficult to say who will become the next president.

Re: Used Hard Drives

That is a scary thought - that someone, somewhere has taken the time to revive deleted content that once belonged to you! If you need to destroy a HDD, I think one of the fastest ways to get the job done is to drill through the platters. I know a government contractor that did just that. They would upgrade workstations, hundreds at a time (many of them with near empty drives that didn't need upgrading!), and give a drill to some summer job high school kid to finish the work. And yea, the unsupervised kid was definitely the weak link in all of this...

Re: Did you know…

I run a few blogs myself, and I could see this feature being very useful for creating more interaction between myself and visitors.

I gotta keep more up-to-date with Google technologies!

Re: Bug in new iPod Nano Firmware

OK, excuse the late commenting, but I wish I could go back in time and NOT buy the Nano 4G. It seems that all models that came before it are superior in design and usability. Sharp corners, annoying accelerometers, too thin to get a proper grip on.. bah! I hope Apple goes back to the 'fat' 3G's for their 2009 model.

Re: The Fine Art of Blog Comments

If writing came easily to everyone, there'd probably be a lot less readers and a lot more writers. In verbal conversations most people would rather give their opinions than listen to what anyone else has to say--our egocentric human nature at work. Thankfully, most people don't have the time, will, or skills to write something worthwhile, meaning the rest of us have a chance to be heard. And make money :)

Re: Call to Action : Protest Against Whale Slaughter

I'm from Canada. I don't eat whale meat, and I think it's very sad to hunt them.

But let's say you live on a volcanic rock and you must fish the seas to survive. And you live this way for thousands of years. Will whaling suddenly cease when the need for their meat is no longer necessary?

The whaling must stop, but charging in with a sanctimonious ethnocentric attitude will not deter these hunters from doing what they feel is their birthright .

I have mammals in my backyard going extinct, but that hasn't stopped local activists from traveling halfway around the world to protest the whale hunt. They make a big noise, but ultimately, they show their own arrogance.

If you want to change the behavior of others, education can be far more effective than intimidation.

I realize this pitch is just for a petition, but I'll still tread carefully before endorsing something.

Re: “.ME” Domain Name Sunrise and Landrush Dates Announced!

Don't sleep through this one! I'm sure that in a couple years they'll have bikes built to spec so that they can cram a whole lot more down there. Or, perhaps a robot will hop on your ride and park it for you. Let's just hope Asimo doesn't help himself to your Shimano gears or something.

Re: Taxi Driver Severs Cyclists' Leg in Violent Hit-and-Run

This is a very sad story, but arguing with someone that is behind a wheel is like confronting a person with a firearm. OK, first off, the Olympics suck. It's 2008 and I want to watch events on youtube -- not NBC's website which is off limits to people accessing outside of the US. It's ridiculous. The Olympics is all about these media corporations. And the event is played up so much like a Hallmark holiday. Ever wonder why nobody gives a damn about gymnastics when the Olympics aren't on?? Nobody cares about amateur sports until you're told to care about them.
