Thanks for the kind words Ben!
I also agree with you and Mark, people who built things on the cheap and didn't raise huge amounts of capital can hope for "easier" and maybe even more profitable exits, especially in this economy. Investors kept pitching us to invest, but I always refused their money and quite frankly, I'm glad I did. For us, it made sense both financially and on the business level; we kept control of the company which obviously gave us greater flexibility.
This acquisition is a win for everybody in my opinion. Us, Websense and more importantly, our users who will greatly benefit from the transaction: that was very important for me.
Oh... the check is *definitely* in the mail, maybe it was lost ;-) Cheers!
PS: Just noticed my typo in the tweet, bleh.

Iterating fast is the key. To do that without too much pain/downtime for the users, good developers and good tests really help.

in Introducing Action Messager: Dead simple IM notifications for your app! on James on Software
This plugin rocks! I guess sending the notifications in a background process (bdrb?) might be a good solution to speed things up. Or maybe you could write a very simple daemon that runs in the background (a la postfix).
Just a question... when do you sleep?

Joe: Of course, I'm totally biased so you might want to do your own research, but our users tell us that accuracy is superior to Akismet's. They also love our nifty way of displaying the quarantine.
Installation is just as easy as installing any Wordpress plugin. You only need to get a free API key from our website. Give it a shot!

in Social Media Frustrations: Trackbacks, Comment Spam and Splogs on DygiScape
I find trackbacks very interesting still. It allows me and my readers to know who links back to a given article. It's true that the trackback implementation as it is right now is broken and very prone to spam, but a good spam filter can do the trick quite well.

in 7 Ways to Guarantee Customers Never Buy From You Again on Instigator Blog
In my opinion, many photographers are crooks. Plain and simple.
I had a similar experience somewhere else in the past. Each picture they burned on a CD (in **low resolution**, thank you) was somewhere around 10$. I think we chose 12... 120$!
And by the way, why do they retain copyrights of my pictures? After all, it's my face on there!

Woah! I tend to do just that, not passing GO and going straight to bed. I don't have nightmares, but my sleep is much less restful.
What's weird is that I don't think I ever realized it until I read your post. Thanks!

in Startups: Challenge the Market Leader, or Ride With It? on Zoli's Blog
James: To answer your question, "Somebody's ham is somebody's spam". In order to make Defensio effective, it learns and adapts from each user's behavior. We feel that it's a much more robust approach.
Another reason that we favor individualized vs collaborative learning is that it would be -very- easy for spammers to confuse/mess up the filter if all the learning was centralized. However, we do have some degree of learning collaboration going on under the hood.
Keep in mind that your performance won't start at 0%! Typically, people get an accuracy rate of about 95% when they first install Defensio, and it goes up to around 99.5% after we gathered information from your traffic. The length of the training period greatly depends on how much ham/spam you get. If you get a lot, it is very quick (couple of days?).
Hope this helps!

I should also mention that I personally tried CakeMail (via courrielleur.com). It's great!
I called them directly to setup the service and I got prompt and professional answers. I advice everybody to try their service, it really is that great.

in Exposed: The Pros and Cons of Freelancing on Instigator Blog
Freelancing is definitely not for everyone. I know people who tried but simply could not motivate themselves to do anything.
Working from home is known to lower motivation for some people. I know it does for me. Thank god, we have a real office now and I'm at least twice as productive!
