in Where’s the Brewin’ Librarian? (or, No… I did not fall off the face of the Earth) on The Brewin' Librarian
Well said Matt, as you know I can relate, especially to -

"There’s no one to blame anymore if things don’t turn out well. There’s no “administration” that won’t let me implement something cool for our department. There’s no lack of ability to control the purse-strings or to delegate the tasks. Now I have to figure out how to be the one to get buy-in. I have to figure out how to take ideas from conception to reality not just in my own little office sphere—but across an entire organization"

But you said it so much better than I would have.

David is right family and self come before work and we'll still be here when you decide to start blogging again.

PS great picture! I bookmarked it and will likely borrow it in the future.

I can't take credit for the idea, I stole it from Royce Kitts when I saw him in Topeka last month!

in Does Size Matter on Chris Brogan
I'm going to have to disagree that blogs are a different matter. Wordy posts often will keep me from reading a blog. Some people do write lengthy post well, there are clearly separated sections, maybe a graphic to help me access it the content or interest. But I couldn’t count the number of times I’ve skipped a post or just stopped reading a blog because of the “essay” format of the posts. Obviously your blog isn’t one of those. 

Well said. Trolls are attention seekers who are using the tactics of bullies instead of intelligent arguments, thoughtful insight or just difference in opinion. In this case the intentions DO count.

@Doug I've played with the Events feature, it's pretty intensive on the data entry so it really isn't worth the effort for most events, it's just too much labor. I put in the "major" events and leave it at that. Plus with the Networks aspect getting pretty much done away with they only show up to people who are fans, before they showed up in the wider network.

I've started encouraging staff to use the digital camera to make videos too. We still don't have a digital video camera (I've suggested it loads of times). I'm hope now that staff now they can use the camera to make videos we'll see more on MRRL's account. It's really helped the flickr account take off.

Dont' forget you'll be seeing - how to search the catalog type videos there very soon too!

in Going Green on What I Learned Today...
I've run into the same problem. I've compromised - a one page handout with info about the presentation and a list of useful links including one to the handout. Not totally green but better than a 30 page handout that will go in the recycle bin.

My local NPR station has a Facebook application for Newsfeeds. I came across it by accident but added right away.

One of the interesting aspects of Facebook is it allows Libraries to create Page, which people before fans of. Or you can create a Group, which people join. These two aspects work differently, Pages allow you to send out an update to fans while Groups allow you to post events in your area.

I've been playing with both for my library to see what gets more interaction from patrons, but they are both fairly new so I can't claim one is better than the other at this point.

Of course I'm biased but I think we did a great job of showing not only how "neat" each of the tools was but how libraries can use them to serve their patrons better and how librarians can use them to make their lives easier! Even our staff does a great job in the LL2.1 lessons on tying them to patron and library use!

I think the changes we made to 2.1 have made more staff excited about it. The idea of "bit size' lessons is something they can really get behind without feeling overwhelmed!
Hurray for Learning! :)

I saw this presentation and it was wonderful. I agree with you, 15 minutes seems pretty short, I aim for 30 and I've been passing that along to other staff members.
