So far...so good! Acutally, I've just adopted the term missional as a self-description. A small group of nuns moved into a rough neighborhood nearby and quickly won the respect of the folks around them. They had the house donated but didn't have a vehicle. The nuns did what nuns do well~ Prayed.

An Italian car dealer, who had rumored connections to the "Family", heard about the nun's plight. He presented them a large new station wagon. When asked why he did it, he threw up his hands and cried, "What could I do? They prayed!"

The station wagon was named, "Gloria".

Back down to earth, I fought being whinny a few months ago about finances. The Lord turned around the whinniness into what I call, "Active Dreaming". You can share with others the grand dream of God's leading or you can whine about not having it all yet. I picked choice B.

Thanks for sharing, makes me feel normal.

Re: Be Forewarned: Ministry Rant Ahead

Here is a story for ya, Mark:

My parents were a part of an active, quasi-community Catholic Charismatic movement in the early 70's. Here is a nifty story:

My husband oversees a ministry training program within a Teen Challenge center, provided by Southwestern AOG University. This semester, the students were taking "Pentecostal Doctrine". When they came to the point on speaking in tongues, everyone disagreed with the traditional AOG stance. They came to the conclusion that tongues are not the first evidence of the in-filling of the Holy Spirit! A changed life is the first evidence, they said. :)

Re: On Being Charismatic

Hi Mark,

I pretty much agree with your above statements, though I haven't articulated them systematically. Odd, how personality can migrate a little as you get older. At least we are in the same camp. ;)

BTW, I was pretty much a slacker through my undergrad, too. I could have done a sparkling thesis, etc., but was satisfied with squeeking through. I've been struggling with what to publish on my blog, if I should have a blog at all, or just hermitized myself until I think I have something important to contribute.

Re: the Jesus Manifesto » Maintenance Mode

Yep, I'm an INFJ now, though I tested in at an INFP when I first took the test 9 years ago. For our scientifically-enlightened minds to fully envelope the personhood of the Holy Spirit is to...well...really live this stuff. And that just messes up our neat little envelopes of predictability and who wants that?

I especially like G.K Chesterton's arguments for the existence of miracles. To not allow for what we cannot explain is to be a materialist. The Holy Spirit frees us from becoming materialists because He is active in the affairs of men.

Now, if we de-personalize the Holy Spirit, what happens? If He is just an "attitude" or part of the Good Ether, then the Will to act is removed. We can go along like ignorant materialists because sometimes the Good Ether is there and sometimes not and our lives are affected in little difference between the two.

That's the best I can add to the soup pot. That isn’t to say that such an approach is EASY. It is just EASIER. And I have no doubt in my mind that I could pull that sort of thing off…if only. If only my heart were in it.

My naive question would be, Why can't you plant a church/community which is both creative-urban-upwardly mobile and down-and-outsiders? Perhaps I do not see the demographic topography well enough to see the impossibility. Maybe Missio Dei could be a bridge between the two groups? Maybe smoking crosses the boundary of private into public, whereas sex is suppose to be "consensual" between two(or more!) people in private. The libertarian stance undergirding this is, "If you aren't hurting anyone, its okay." Second hand smoke is proven to hurt others, so NOT cool. Of course, there is the whole STD and Irresponsible Reproduction side to sexual immorality...

I empathize with your family situation and your mother. My mom has stage 4 lung cancer, not due to smoking. We are always quick to say that. In the conversations I've had with certain leaders, the issue of the leaders being very humble and time-tested sorts was put forth as a defense of their being the spokesmen. I felt like my head was patted and told to run off and play in the forum.

~Anna

Re: the Jesus Manifesto » Maintenance Mode

Mark, I've been tasting the same flavor from the groups you mentioned over the past several months. Try telling that to my radical egalitarian mother who sews quilts and baby clothes! I inherited my sewing machine and serger from her. ;)

I strongly suggest reading The Midwife's Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich who illustrates the "Alternative Feminine Economy" of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in rural America.
