Geoff,
Exploitation, Hah! Try telling that to my radical egalitarian mother who sews quilts and baby clothes! I inherited my sewing machine and serger from her. ;)
I strongly suggest reading The Midwife's Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich who illustrates the "Alternative Feminine Economy" of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in rural America. That'll shatter a few narratives for ya!

I take option C a little further by purchasing fabric (sometimes made in the USA or otherwise somewhat fair trade) and sewing a portion of my clothing. That cuts out a few of the oppressive steps. The patterns I create myself or buy from small designers, usually families or mothers.
Buttons or other fiddley bits are more troublesome...they almost always come from China.
Sewing fills in the gaps around Thrifting.

I'll second what Matt said about C.S. Lewis...who is really a revamp of G.K. Chesterton. The whole scene from the Narnia movie where the Professor makes the case for Lucy "Lying, Insane or Truth-teller" is straight Chesterton.
His "Ethics of Elfland" chapter in Orthodoxy is the best case for Pagan turned Theist turned Christian.
Can you tell I had the Chronicles of Narnia as bedtime stories for three years as a child?
Your fellow Pagan Jesus-Follower ~Anna

Mark, I've been tasting the same flavor from the groups you mentioned over the past several months. In the conversations I've had with certain leaders, the issue of the leaders being very humble and time-tested sorts was put forth as a defense of their being the spokesmen. I felt like my head was patted and told to run off and play in the forum.

Thank you for sharing, Mark, even in your pissy attitude. :)
When I read the post yesterday, I immediately thought of Dorothy Day, whom I know you hold as one of your role models. She was abstract in a very concrete way in her writing. Catch my drift? I love reading her articles online because it feels like I am stepping into her world and see the application of her ideals, however feeble and weak. I know I've suggested it before, but I think you should take a little more from life (bad and good) and add it to your writing. People love stories and since we are living The Story, it makes sense to share it.
I empathize with you on being a "grand idea" person and having no means or platform with which to accomplish it.

Prepare for doing so many push-ups that you will cry on the floor like a baby... oh, wait...spiritual director. Pshaw, you'll be fine. Your ego will take a kicking, but that is what you signed up for, right?

Excellent point. Maybe smoking crosses the boundary of private into public, whereas sex is suppose to be "consensual" between two(or more!) people in private. The libertarian stance undergirding this is, "If you aren't hurting anyone, its okay." Second hand smoke is proven to hurt others, so NOT cool. Of course, there is the whole STD and Irresponsible Reproduction side to sexual immorality...
I empathize with your family situation and your mother. My mom has stage 4 lung cancer, not due to smoking. We are always quick to say that. The type she has is most likely caused by a combination of genetics, pollution and life-time exposure to industrial chemicals in laundry detergents and household cleaners. Hazards of being a housewife!

Thank you for speaking up and offering no-fluff Christianity!
I just learned that our town has the highest gang population per capita in our state, ahead of the two major cities. Why? Drugs and trafficking of heaven-knows-what across the border from Texas and further south. Desperate people in a desperate place...Come Lord Jesus!
