My dad will watch the entire "A Christmas Story" marathon. We're big fans of the old school story of Rudolph and then the original Grinch.

I'm already listening to my holiday channel on Pandora. :) As I write, my favorite came on... "Carol of the Bells" by George Winston.

in True or False - Generations and Their Music on FredMcKinnon.Com
True. Back to the "no blame" concept... I think today's music is much more "dynamic." Hymns and old praise choruses were 1 chord structure repeated over and over and they typically used the same set of songs over and over - not expanding their music.

Younger generations have been raised with the expectation of new songs introduced regularly, punches, putting a 7 in the bass, replacing a major with a minor, etc. It doesn't have nearly as much with age as it does with the culture (church or otherwise) they were raised in...just my 2 cents.

in Developing Leaders on Purpose on BetterThanBlank
1. Crazy love for people
2. Ability to clearly communicate (vision casting, teaching - one on one or groups, confrontation)
3. Integrity (able to follow through with commitments, has a good reputation with people for that reason)
4. As Rich said, the ability to DELEGATE, with the intention to REPLICATE
5. Servant (speaks to motives)
6. Humility

In organization development, we do an analysis (like what you're doing now), then we set a map that says what skills/abilities/values we want people to have, and finally we DOCUMENT. As we find the values that are important, we arrange for folks to strategically gain those values/skills. Self-study (reading a book), group learning (staff-led internal training), conferences, and most importantly, one-on-one conversations.

I sent you a copy of a form we use a couple of months back, but many companies prepare an Individual Development Plan for their employees. Hope that helps!

in Rock Star Worship on FredMcKinnon.Com
Hey Fred!

Great conversation piece! My dad always told me that our goal in ministry was to be "dead men walking." There's definitely a culture right now in the worship music industry that doesn't resemble that at all. Unfortunately, some of us aren't good looking enough to ever truly be rock stars :).

Seriously though, it's case by case. Some worship leaders I've met (especially in the blogosphere), are trying to build their own cult-following (not build community). It seems like it comes with the nature of being an artists - we emphasize our self-importance. I love "the look" of the mainstream worship leaders, but some do abuse it - but some old school traditionals take just as much pride in their dress and look.

It really comes down to the heart of the matter - it's obvious that Matt Redman wants to make God famous, and that's led to his promotion, with some other artists, they want to make themselves famous, and God just goes along for the ride. I don't think the lights or cameras have anything more to do with it than the heart of the person...

in I Thought We Were *SUPPOSED* To Sing? on FredMcKinnon.Com
A couple of thoughts:

1. Where is your senior pastor and lead staff during worship? Are they engaged, 'cause if they're not, then you can kiss everyone else goodbye.

2. Do they have much to sing about? This could be a good measure of where people are spiritually. Are they celebrating freedom and victory, or are they just attending?

3. When was the last time you guys taught on the importance of musical worship at a weekend service?

4. When was the last time you took a random survey of the people in the church to get a feel for their view of worship at SSCC?

I'm sure free-for-all Friday's are supposed to be light-hearted, but...

1. My whole team from work got laid-off on Monday
2. I'm working on a new contract leading a new team in an industry I know nothing about (I don't even think I'm faking it well, anymore)
3. I've been praying for maturity, and He's answering my prayer - and it's hurting (this actually has nothing to do with the layoff)
4. I've realized this week just how task-driven instead of people-driven I get, and how it hurts folks (a lot of the maturity issues)

It's actually been a pretty rough week, and I'm so glad it's Friday and almost over.

in Worship Confessional: July 13, 2008 | Consuming Worship on Consuming Worship
Not to say anything you don't already know, but here it goes:

1. Don't grow weary in doing good. I'm sorry it's such a tough transition for you. No visionary every had it easy, it's always been a fight to make the kind of transitions you're doing now. You're in good company with many who came before you.

2. You can't make this transition, at least not alone. I don't know how involved your pastor is in this transition, but he's the ultimate worship leader in any room he walks in. That's how it works. He's got to teach around the transition, he's got to be on the front row embracing the music and setting the tone in the room for how things will continue to go.

3. Transitions like this, unfortunately, result in people leaving. If the transition is slow so that people won't leave, forget it. You're trying to change centuries of tradition in one decade. Acceptance can't be the goal, honoring the Lord through the transition is the only goal.

I'll be praying for more wisdom than you've ever had before in your life!

in Effective Leading on FredMcKinnon.Com
Pretty broad question. Hmmm... I've seen communication alone cost my company hundreds of thousands of dollars, I've seen people lose their jobs over it, I've seen people get hurt and leave a church over it. It doesn't matter what wisdom and knowledge you have until you are able to communicate it to others. People communicate best in different ways - written, spoken, with body language - and getting a staff to clearly communicate can be tough. It's about using appropriate communication at the appropriate time.

Leadership - is something you do, not a title your given. Leaders are usually hard to organize and administrate on a church staff, but they're going to lead you to success ultimately, because they want to have an impact on people.

Oh yeah, and I'm Matthew and I'm not sure what title you'd give me these days. I'm a worship leader, who pastors, but not right now, at least not officially, so I work as a training developer, but volunteer at Oasis Worship Centre in Nashville, TN to help with worship, greeting, parking, technology planning (specifically web 2.0 integration), develop training, and whatever else the house needs.

Hey Fred!

You're one of the few bloggers out there who does the contemporary stuff and still seems to have one foot in the charismatic realm - that's one of the reasons I'm always attracted to your posts.

What's your background? Does the church you're in now reflect your theological beliefs (feel free to email you answer to that one)?

Well, since I've asked the same question, I thought I would weigh in. I've use planningcenteronline.com extensively, but I don't think it's Web 2.0 because the content is not really user-driven, and the last time I used it (a couple of months ago), there was really no interactivity tools within it.

I used MySpace and Facebook to send Monday Morning Attaboys, and used GoogleDocs to move things back and forth. I'm investigating the church using Twitter officially as a medium of communicating within.

You suck up! You just wanted him to post a link to your blog! I bet your stats will go through the roof today.

No really, thanks for the reminder about honoring each other - I really needed to read that.

P.S. Los wrote about how he seems to have a bigger impact through blogging than in "real" life, so I thought it was interesting that (I promise I'm not a freak) you (Alex) were in one of my dreams this week.

Wow! Amazing story that reminds me that our relationship with Christ is all about responding - not thinking or wishing - to His call. Thanks for sharing!

Also, I wanted to say thank you for your comment on my last post. I always look forward to your posts, and even more to your comments on my posts. I was hoping this post would get a comment from you.

I appreciate your sincerity, authenticity, and work to build a community of worshipers. Can't wait to meet face-to-face for coffee some day!
