yeah - I saw those comments and thought much the same stuff (and I went over to Alexa and had a look at Alexa too and plugged my blogs in).
It also made me realized just how powerful this medium is for us ordinary untrained folk :-)

just a quick question/comment. When you describe me as 'infamous'..... do you really mean that? My dictionary defines infamous as:
"having a bad reputation; notorious; deplorable; indecent; villainous"
I certainly hope I don't fit into those categories :-)

Okay, fair enough. Evidently I was confusing "infamous" with...something else that means something totally different :)
I'll stick with "famous" - that seems to work much better. No way you fit the "infamous" category, I'm a big fan. Thanks for keeping me honest :)

in 2nd, 6th… got to try harder on duncanriley.com
nice to see the update. I suspect the change in rankings of ProBlogger largely came from the changes at Alexa of late - ProBlogger took a big leap up in the rankings for some reason. It'd previously gone down considerably 4-5 months ago last time they seemed to change their algorithm. Of course we all know how accurate Alexa is - my other blog DPS does 4 times the traffic of ProBlogger yet Problogger well outranks it. Anyway - nice to see some new blogs in the list - congrats again on being at the pointy end!

in Why it's time to break out of Twitter (Scripting News) on Scripting News
tough one - I have mixed feelings.
While I think giving new users a starting place of people to follow makes sense (it'd increase engagement and people actually using it rather than just signing up and not using their account - something about it kind of grates for me.
to be honest - perhaps it is partly that I worked my butt off for a year or so to build my own follower numbers to 40k and then see others gain that many readers in a few days.... but to me it also seems a little against the culture of what Twitter is about for me - that is a network of people all interacting where the unknown person can be on the same footing as the celebrity....
To me seeing some of those on the list who are on it for no reason other than that they starred in a movie both makes sense (in that it's going to help twitter convince people to use it) but also makes me wonder if this is a network that I want to be a part of..... I mean I'm sure Demi Moore and Ryan Seacrest are going to be fascinating reads and all.... but is that what Twitter wants to be known for?
Perhaps this is just the inevitable though and I need to pull my head in and let Twitter go where it must go :-)

I'm with Darren. The moment a bunch of people just kind of blazed past me, I realized there was gaming. And until reading this post, I wasn't really that bothered by it, but Dave's right. As links are currency and as this traffic pathing opportunity is huge, it gets sad quickly to think of how "valuable" the mechanisms are to drive more attention.
Strangely, thinking about this made me more sad than vision-filled.

Build it and they will come..... I hope.
Had to upgrade TwiTip a couple of weeks back too (although it started on dodgy hosting) and had similar 'its a gamble' thoughts - but I think it pays off. Extra page views from people who got frustrated before, perhaps a few extra subscribers, less headaches and distraction of having to manage a stressed out server etc.
Sounds like Inquisitr is getting some nice link love - hope it converts to a step up in baseline traffic!

that happens when we get northerly winds (blows in from the dessert) and then rain. You'll see more over the summer. Few years back we had a massive sand storm too which was a joy to behold.

well yes, you are wired differently :-) but I think your advice was also very good. I think the integreation of comments between services is the way things will continue to go - they certainly seem to lengthen conversations as you point out.

in Google Knol - Friend of bloggers or blog killer ? on Blog Design Studio
Perhaps my title suggests that I think it'll 'kill' blogs - but I don't. I do think it'll hurt some though - in terms of their search rankings for competitive terms. For example I rank #2 behind Wikipedia for a couple of big terms and know that they take most of the traffic for those terms as a result. With Knol I half expect to be #3 for those terms in a year and as a result traffic will fall more.
It won't kill my blog - but when a term that you rank #2 for sends 10,000 visitors a year and you fall to #3 and only get 5,000 (and this happens on a few terms) it does take away some potential new readers, income etc.
It's not going to stop me blogging or grind things to a halt - but I guess I do think that on the scale that Google do things that it'll have an impact upon small publishers across the board which will add up.
