Good post. I remember when her second album came out and my Dad and I discussed how we were disappointed with it. It just lacked something of the spark of the first. I heard her do a set on Morning Becomes Eclectic on Monday. I was sadly underwhelmed.

BG, I always seem to miss the live-blogging of things that aren't usually so much fun, but somehow are more fun when live-blogged. I'm going to see Josh Ritter play. I'll come by and read the snark when I get home, though.

I saw Jeff Tweedy solo a couple of years ago, right after Wilco won a Grammy. He started the song off saying that he never thought much of the Grammys, until he won one. (And now his Dad wants a replica of his.) It was funny. I bet you'll be funnier, though.

I think (and I'm just guessing here), that making art of any sort and showing it to the public is hard enough. I can't imagine the agony of creating something only to have someone else mangle it. Because you're name is still on it, even if it no longer your vision. You've got to be a lot braver than me.

Hey BG, I'm sorry I didn't show up! I was at my parents' and the computer room doesn't have a tv in it. I almost got off my butt to go comment about the shorts (go me on both accounts!), but there was a 60 lb dog who thinks he's a lap dog sitting on me... and I'm lazy. Great job, though. I hated the preshow, and most of the dresses. What's with the blah colors? I hated the intro and the stupid interpretive dances. If you had nixed those we would have ended at a more decent hour!

Hell yeah, I loved this scene. I finally saw this, cramped in an airplane seat, hurtling towards Chicago at an alarming rate, and really, really liked it.

I think Taratino would be an awful choice to direct a Bond, though. Too much ego.

I like the books, too, but also can never remember them by the time the new one comes out. Or the new movie comes out, which usually leaves me surprised a bit. At this point I'm just too invested in the characters to stop.

Which of the films did you see? Because I thought the first two were terrible, but the last two were much better, especially the one by CuarÃƒÂ³n.

I read Breakfast of Champions when I was about 16. A very prudish 16. I don't remember much about it except for the pictures of assholes and other bits of anatomy. I don't remember it very well.

I read Mother Night for a class on espionage and dissent that I took in college and really enjoyed it. I've always meant to read Slaughterhouse and will definitely soon.

Two quotes from Mother Night that I scribbled into my quote book when I was 19.

Tom, what makes me mad (in an incredibly naive way, I know), is that is unfair because terrestrial radio stations do not have to pay royalties at all.

There's a House bill in committee right now to make things equitable between online and terrestrial radio stations. Gaper's Block, a Chicago blog, has good coverage of it here. I'm calling my rep to try and get her to support it.

I agree with estiv, there is definite social prejudice in Cotter's piece. It reminds me of people complaining that people read trashy books or something. It's good people are reading or appreciating art! Regardless of the content. People have to start somewhere.

But I love Hopper and would love to see this exhibit.

I'm really looking forward to this film. I love the Frames and saw Hansard and Irglova play in a tiny venue about a year or so ago.

See the Frames live if you get the chance. Hansard is incredibly charismatic and he always has the crowd eating out of his hands by the end of the first song.

Lance, interesting take on the movie. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but (as usual) you make some good points. I thought that Dench was deliciously malevolent, but I think you're right that she's too old. I also think I was distracted by wardrobe (and real estate) envy to think clearly about Blanchett.

Ooh, that book looks totally up my alley. I'll definitely check it out. Some of my happiest memories as a teenager were spent obsessing over a mix tape track list. I loved the process when you were taping, listening to the tracks play, thinking and weighing the next song.

A lifelong love of things British started because of a Beatles tape slipped into my stocking when I was a little.

I loved that Prague has a Beatles' wall, that the communists used to paint over and over and the students would repaint again and again. One of my teachers in Prague learned English first through the Beatles.

I also love that when I was in China, in a bar listening to a Chinese singer-songwriter-y type, he broke out into "Let it be," putting an incredible emphasis on "IT."

I'll definitely check out any record Neddie extols.

Hi Chuck, I agree with the assessment that fans always seem to want their favorite shows to go on forever and a day. I'm fans of all the shows (save the Sopranos b/c I don't get HBO) you mentioned, and was relieved about all of their endings. Gilmore should have ended two seasons ago, or at least when the Pallandinos left. Veronica was a bittersweet ending, so much right with that show but it didn't always measure up. And Battlestar I'm really relieved is ending. It truly feels like it will be a whole entity, not something being milked to death. I love that show, don't get me wrong, but having it end will seem right.

Sometimes, when I'm in a group of peers and we don't know each other, discussing cartoons of our youth comes up. The Gummi Bears theme always comes to mind.

Jason, check your PBS stations. Several around the country have been playing the Chris Eccleston season. He's also great, but it's hard to beat Tennant. I assume they'll play his eps as well. SciFi should be starting Tennant's third season soon.

I have such mixed feelings about Ryan Adams, but they boil down to the fact that I wish he edited himself better. He's a great songwriter, but would be better if he didn't flood the world with his output.

I have only listened to the album a couple of times, but it hasn't stuck with me too much. I really hate "Halloween Head," though.

Have you listened to his pre-solo work in Whiskeytown? Because I think a couple of those albums are wonderful.

I agree with you on the title, it was just a little too confusing. It would have been more effective if people understood what it meant.

I also loved that scene about the patronuses in the Ministry. I thought that the way she set up the near-death experience, though, borrowed a little too much from the scene in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe when Aslan sacrifices himself to the White Witch, knowing of a deeper magic.

Actually, she borrowed heavily all over the place, but the book was still ultimately satisfying. Except the epilogue. Totally unnecessary.

Well, just because I didn't think it was terrible doesn't mean I didn't think it was good. I agree with you, Karen, that the lead was awful. And the dialogue was stupid. But, I guess I'm admitting that I'll watch a bad show because of an actor or two.

I think pilots tend to be a bad showcase for a show's potential, even though I think that's what they are technically supposed to do. They tend to be an introduction of main characters and how they are related, or at least this particular pilot was. I hope they give Dohring more to do, because he is fantastic. He would have been an more interesting lead, if the lead were darker or more conflicted. I think they are letting the lead off the hook a little.

They've had others show in the past, to keep the final three secret. The final runways were done last week at Fashion Week, but we won't see them til next week. A bit of a delay.

Last season all four ended up being in the running, but we didn't know that going into Fashion Week, and thought that one of the four was a dummy show.

I saw the new Indy yesterday, and I was pleased that I saw it in a venue where there was delicious beer and pizza available for me to partake in while I watched. The beer helped. I thought the movie was fairly lazy. It's nice they brought Marian back, but they didn't give her anything to do, and barely any lines. The whole thing felt like a retread of Indy knock-offs. And I hated what the crystal skull was, that seemed so very lazy to me. You can't come up with a better ancient thing? If I wanted X-Files, I'd have watched X-Files.

I agree completely with the tiredness of Ford in the warehouse, and with your comment about the prairie dogs, we thought that too.

But even the amusing parts were so derivative (ie: the Back to the Future bits you mentioned).

MA: I hope the X-Files movie will be good, but I just don't know. It's been a long time since the show ended, and the new Indy is an example of how it's hard to recapture that essence or energy from the original. I remember seeing the first movie (and something about an army of bees?) but that's about it.
