Working with many large corporate clients, trying to get them to think this way as well - the upside to exporting the brand in my mind completely overshadows any downside they may feel about the loss of control (which i think they actually lost sometime around 1996 anyhow). Wrote a post on it a while back....

So far liking tumblr groups as well.....testing it with the strategy group at my company for the next two weeks...trying to avoid the email scrums that tend to happen....

I know some people have tumblr pages with comments - wold be good if i could figure that out.....(finding templates with functionality, exposing the code on templates - finding all that a bit difficult)

in Thinking About GOOG This Morning on A VC
In fact, that's what all the marketing rags are saying. IMO what you're probably seeing right now is a general market nervousness with everyone cutting back on all their total budgets while they watch to see what happens and regroup. What you are likely to see is that as sales start to slump, marketers will regig their budgets and Google should see a big wack of that - what is likely going to be hurt are more traditional media (TV/Print) that have had a pause and likely won't see the same recover due to lack of direct ROI.

which is, of course, based on virtually no facts and mostly a lot of
conjecture and anecdotal evidence. :-)

Reading books feels awkward in part because— they’re not connected to anything.

Other than your imagination and possibly your soul.....(and of course your neural network too just in case you rolled your eyes at the soul comment)

Time to but your networked ADD aside M and go home and read a book. :)

Parakey anyone? Blake Ross anyone?
Facebook bought them and they've been MIA. However, if we read the parakey stuff from Ross that's exactly what he was saying Parakey was going to be.

in How much is a SuperPoke worth? on Mathew's comments
I would add on to Antje's point - all this great data everyone keeps speaking about...i work in marketing communications - companies have got nothing but data (customer data, market research, website, yada yada yada) and they do, well, pretty much nothing with it. So why is everyone so damn hot over the data? Particularly on a closed network, that to Antje's point, other people own?

And great marketing isn't based on demographics anymore. So really, what are you all investing in? If the app somehow supplied info about unmet customer needs in a particular verticle, maybe then someone should care.....

I'm sorry but this is the 1.0 equivalent in my mind of investing millions of dollars in a destination site for people who own dogs.

in Facebook: Beacon woes are overstated on Mathew's comments
Did i say totally? I meant mostly, you are mostly wrong....
Which of course, makes me, totally right.

andrewgoodman Mathew,

1. Not everyone restricts their purchases to dainty things like coffee tables and throw rugs. I'd predict that Beacon if implemented as stated will make past episodes of "shitstorm" and "apeshit" look like a light drizzle and a petting zoo, respectively, by comparison.

2. It's opt-out??!?!

in Facebook: Beacon woes are overstated on Mathew's comments
I totally diagree with you M..Letting me "discover" that I am being tracked outside of facebook and that they are co-relating that info to me personally is not only a potential violation of bill C6 here in Canada (where the burden of disclosure happens to be on the Corporation in question and NOT the user), it's a complete abuse of trust with their community. Which IMO is integral to the long term viability of facebook.

Ok enough of that. I coudn't find an OPT out link - can you point me to it?

mathewi's picture
mathewi That's a good point, Leigh -- Canada's privacy commissioner may have
something to say about Beacon, just as she did about Google's
StreetView.

As for the opt out choice, I think that appears on a case-by-case
basis at the site you're on when you buy or do something. I haven't
actually seen one.

And you are free to disagree with me, of course, as always -- although
by definition that makes you wrong. :-)

Ha! For any clients that think one customer can't make a difference in their lives. I wonder if he got the same ditsy customer service agent that I did when i started my "give leigh her 10$ back Amazon.com" campaign years ago?

Welcome to the wonderful world of web design. No matter what you change, people get all freaky about it. Personally I don't care as long as:

1. It's readable
2. You keep that cute little photo of you as a baby on your home page

(number 2 should be read in a really annoying baby talk like voice to get the most impact)

Uch...everyone's lost perspective. 500 Million is not downside.

Let's not forget (NORTEL ANYONE?) how companies can be worth a lot and then...not so much really. The polar ice caps could melt from global warming, send a huge tidal wave that then causes some new flu pandemic which sends the markets in to tail spins, and then, then what would facebook be worth i ask?

Anyway, i digress. It's the weather. My point is, 500 million is not downside.
