Bush was given honorary degrees by Yale and Notre Dame in 2001 and LSU in 2004. (And many more, I'm sure; those were the first few I found.) The Yale Daily News noted that his degree in 2001 was given with his father's history in mind; apparently his Bush Sr. received his own honorary degree from Yale in 1991, three years into his presidency, and was peeved that it took three years.

ASU's defense of their decision is laughable. Why not just say "We're very conservative here and just don't like the President"?

Re: Arizona State refuses Obama honorary degree. War is by far the biggest tax sink. But argue that these wars aren't necessary or justified and it will be like arguing with creationists - you just can't get through to these people that decision makers are not always - and in fact, frequently - not acting in their interest or the nation's. They'll dig their heels in and defend the worst, most unforgivable sort of corruption and call it family values.

Re: Truck Bearing Kibble

A large part of the appeal of this comic, when it's not being brilliant in another way, is figuring out the humor. This could have been done better with no text, especially if the second panel clearly showed an expression of complete bewilderment on Marry Poppins' face, which would have carried the joke completely. No text definitely captures the zen of this comic more strongly; I think the author should be very careful not to take the 'I don't get it' crowd too seriously.

Re: Not So Easy Rider

See what gas prices have done...

Re: Batter-Breathing Dragon

I didn't laugh until I read the comments, in what I think is a brilliant twist of humor, both the knight AND the readers become confused! :)

Re: Tunnel Vision (Gotham Gazette, August 2009)

I find the gotham gazette's publishing of this "dissent" to be some what sad. Sad because invariably the "architects" of these "better visions" don't have enough information to support the claims they are making. If the dissent actually put up some detailed analysis, I might stop to consider it's points, but simply saying "wouldn't this be great?" without determining practical feasibility is pointless at this stage of the game.

Re: Flash 10 Beta is Available

Where is the Flash 10 Beta? I recall in the late 70's being in summer school and being taught about energy using Carter Administration Energy Dept booklets. The booklets taught that we needed to stop relying on coal because world supply would be depleted by 1995. Petroleum was also given a short life line. Well, there is still plenty of both around.

(I remember also being taught that global cooling was a serious environmental risk we all had to face. A new Ice Age was imminent.)

Now I am no fan of fossil fuel energy, but there is still an ample supply of petroleum around. The problem is environmental and economical, not from the supply side, but the demand. Oil is not going to be depleted anytime soon.

That said, I look forward to the large-scale intro of the ultra-efficient diesels and hybrids in the USA. This country has been way too lethargic in addressing our part of the global over-consumption of non-renewable resources.

By embracing efficient vehicles and alternative fuel technology, we can make sure we never deplete the oil supply.

Re: US Car Manufacturers Say Efficiency is Too Expensive

"For those of us who have towing requirements. What do you suggest?I looked a a hybrid 4x4 ford escape. It has crap for towing power.I hook up to a trailer between 10 and 12 thousand pounds twice a week. The leave for 3 days at a time for work oriented. There is not a hybrid that can tow yet. When they make one.Post it.So that i can locate one."

There will always be some people that need a car/truck that needs to have the power to 'work'. I do not envision any hybrid cement trucks or dump trucks in the near term. Same goes for towing and other utility needs for working vehicles.

The problem is 90% of the people that drive pick-up trucks and large SUV's do not need to. Many families need to figure out why they are buying cars twice the size of what they need. They don't need a hybrid Hummer H2, they need a reality check.

If $85 fuel fill-ups don't wake a person up, what will?

Re: Final Fantasy: Jenova’s Witness

You do realize that you are making fun of two totally different churches, don't you?
