I agree people can have another point of view. But mindless comments should be punished.

in How is the 2008 Iberian Harvest Shaping Up? on Catavino
"This decrease in production is also being seen as far east as Utiel Requena and as far west as the Alentejo in Portugal" and if you want to country hop, try as far west as California. Sonoma took a similar beating in terms of production due to weather this year, but as you're saying for Spain and Portugal, we're really proud of the quality and turn out for Tin Cross this year.

I'm impressed with the story about the wood for your wine rack. Working at Tin Cross this Summer, when we weren't in the fields we were involved in the reconstruction of the ranch house deck. It was a grueling process of measurements, cutting, removing old planks and nails, and driving in new 4" nails (which by the way if you don't hit it right on the head the first time, the nail is useless). Just a tad more involved than the wine rack, glad it has been an easy going project.

in Restaurante Asador La Chata - A Review of Our Keynote Dinner at The EWBC 2008 on Catavino
I'm very jealous. First, Andrea gets to do her posting about the almost-suckling pig she ate, and now you're own marvel of a sucking pig. I feel like I'm being left out of the suckling pig loop and it sounds great every time. The description of the place sounds kind of magical. I have italian background and a lot of my favorite italian restaurants in the states are as you describe with that old 1800s, large ovens you can see, family run-feel. It's hard not to feel welcomed in those environments. Glad you landed that for the first dinner of the event, from the way it sounds, it's a keeper.

in Exciting Announcement - The DeLong Iberian Wine Map - with help from Catavino on Catavino
Gabriella and Ryan, you should definitely consider labeling areas of the map for new posts about some of the visits you do. I think that would be a really fun addition to each post; to actually see on a map the areas you've been talking. Also--the map is a given in the post, great job, but no one has mentioned it so I feel obliged; that wine varietal table blows my mind. It's like a periodic table of wine grapes, I just think it's fantastic and i've never really seen anything like it before.

That was a good comparison drawn from the Grand Canyon; it's the experience itself, not the re-telling, which touches the heart. Unfortunately, that just puts a damper on my day seeing as I couldn't experience this event. I can take comfort in that fact that people who's hearts were touched will do their best to re-tell the experience. You will do your best to re-tell it, right? Please?

in Wine Tourism in Sherry Country and a Lesson from Portugal on Catavino
You couldn't be more correct in your plea for tourism. Since when did any product become just about the product? We don't just drink alone for a reason. It's about social interaction, people and friends. If you want to sell more cases and be more recognized, there's no better credibility source than word of mouth. Better tourism could only benefit this process and open up the eyes of the public to what you yourself said is great once you get past the barriers. I'm really pushing for the idea of having our vineyard at Tin Cross be open for visitors in the future. I hope to see it come true. Today's marketing is in a large part all about the experience.

Such descriptive food writing. My mouth actually began to water and I've already eaten dinner. That looks absolutely delicious, the description of the crispy citrus skin reminds me very much of chinese-style duck I've had in the past. This meal sounds like an absolute balance of flavors. When my life takes me to Mealhada, I hope to take my appetite with me.

Likewise the later one starts, the less keen they are on the prospect exploring the internet. It would be interesting, if you haven't before, to take a poll of those who actively read your blog and their age. Maybe a quick sample size on the comment section? I myself am twenty-two and just recently became an active reader of Catavino. Age isn't the only factor in this, anyone can learn at any age. It's merely the limits we place on ourselves which hinder the process. If they were in fact on the older side, I hope to hear that your discussion with the "wine geeks" inspired them to be more active among the blogs. Until then look forward to the new, tech-saavy wave of wine geeks just coming into this world of wine.

What was the age of the "wine geeks" that showed up at your forum yet hardly frequent or read a blog? From my past experience with marketing and social media in America, age is one of the largest contributing factors for blog readership. Digital Natives, or those who have grown up with the internet from a young age, are just now hitting the age range of 18-24. These people are a sweet spot generation in terms of technology and are most comfortable with exploring the internet. Now, I am seeing successful blogs that are even being run by 12 year olds. That's not to say writing a successful blog is easy, it's just that people are learning on younger and younger. The earlier they start, the more saavy they become. (Continued on second comment)

That was a great article! Congratulations to the both of you on being featured. I consider myself really lucky to have come across this as my first blog post I've ever read on your site. Not only was this a great introduction to catavino.net but it gave me a great sense of who you guys are, the people behind it. I can only expect to see great posts in the future, but for now I'll have to try and catch up.
