In order to tie most of the faces I met at #nms08 to the cards, I am also conducting searches on LinkedIn to see photos and then creating a note for myself. Wonder if the service includes photo attachments? Thanks for sharing this resource!

Re: Taking the "Me" Out of Social Media

Shannon, you brought a funny too! Seriously, I smiled. You're right -- it could be because there's a grain of "truthiness" to the post.

Scott, killer post. Thanks.

Re: Social Media for Business: The Dos & Don’ts of Sharing

Thanks Sarah, for this thoughtful, comprehensive piece.

In general I agree with most points; however, I have to disagree about “creating your social media *personality* ” which directly conflicts with the notion of being transparent and authentic. If you are being “authentic” why is there a need to *create* a “personality?” Why can’t you just "be?”

Also, just like I advise my clients, I believe that each social media tool is different and has different purposes and communities. What I am sharing and discussing on what forum may be very different in flavor to what I am sharing and discussing on another network. Hence, my communications / interactions will be different. Doesn’t this change the notion of offering up a *consistent* personality or brand? As fluid, complex, ever-evolving and emotional creatures is it even logical to assume we can paint one picture of ourselves and share it consistently and flawlessly across all networks and SocMed tools?

This is one of the many reasons why I don’t believe in the phrase “personal branding” too.

That’s because people have *reputations*. Companies have *brands*. And just like corporate brands are determined by their customers, your “personal brand” is determined by those who know and interact with you (not by how you package yourself). And the only way they can get to know the *real* you, to interface with you, and get a true sense of you, is to be you – not a brand identity.

Re: How Complex Should a Marketing Plan Be?

Marketing Integrity: You hit the nail on the head. An annual review of biz goals is perfect for keeping folks on track. If the plan maps to those goals, focus is easier to maintain and success is easier to achieve.
This was #1 in my recent list of 5 Guiding Principles for Marketers.

http://diablogue.wordpress.com/2008/06/20/5-gui...

John Jantsch: I like that you said: "Who makes an ideal customer for your business" rather than "Define your target audience(s)." Indeed, I see the "groundswell" as a major catalyst for big changes down the road in our lexicon of marketing. :)

Re: Privateers- Backing Your Pirate Ships

IMO, you've been sailing all along. And not a dry eye in the house (including mine). The memories, which I tend to keep neatly stowed away along with my ornaments, came flooding back. And, no surprise, figured out again that we – as humans – have much more in common than we do differences. Trade the name and it could have been my house growing up…with the same brother on the couch…and the same German friend – who I even stayed with, once, for a whole summer vacation. I am so not kidding. :-? Thanks again for the peek in the past. It’s always my pleasure, dear. Happy holidays, Ann. I hope it’s filled with glorious warmth, peace, and light. :)

Re: Refugee At Home

Ann,

I'm so sorry you had to endure this. I'm familiar with the sickness, thoughts, fears, and despair you described. Had a few repairs myself in 06.
Talk about feeling helpless and dependent! Yes, I took it all for granted, too!

Life is full of cruel ironies: That you should generate one of your best pieces of writing (IMHO) during one of your worst moments...

That you should require any cutting of any sort on such a perfectly pleasant and perky nose (a true gift of Nature - or your mom or dad? :-) is yet another cruel irony. [People PAY big $$ to create your type of nose! heh]

That you should change my mind in 10 minutes about not wearing sunscreen after my husband unsuccessfully spent 10+ years pleading with me to wear it.

That's right. I - the one who never, ever wears sunscreen - will now wear sunscreen. Nope, I'm not a masochist or a moron. I just never wore sunscreen. Now I will. And now I'm thinking this piece should appear in many other pubs and on other sites...to scare the hell out of everyone else into wearing it too.

Thank you Ann. THANK YOU. (my husband will probably thank you too)

I am so very happy that you are feeling better.

Best wishes,
Jaculynn
