Re: Top 10 Reasons to Avoid the SimpleDB Hype

You are missing the point completely.

Databases != RDBMS. RDBMS is but "one" kind of database. Then you have hierarchical, object-based, document-based, etc.

SimpleDB is but one kind of non-RDBMS database. There are use cases that fit RDBMS, that are use cases that make RDBMS cry. That's where SimpleDB or other alternatives get into the game.

Just as simple as that. When all you know is a hammer, all your problems are nails.

This article is just wanting more traffic by generating FUD to newbies.

Re: Ruby +1 for Google Apps == Ungrateful?

I'd say that Google never said that it will be Python only, just for the time being.

And another thing is that they actually could make it Python-only if they wanted, after all it is their product.

Heroku is Rails only and I see no one complaining.

And I am a Rails guy. Though as Zed targeted mainly you, it would be nice to have an statement about this.

Of course, it could possibly just be like throwing fuel to the flame, but a professional and explanatory (not apologetic) closure from you would be great for all of us that was just left with the Zed rant.

Re: Don’t Hate The Pickaxe

Ok, the Pickaxe is not the best book around. But remember: it is one thing to write about an american language, having english speaking authors and community. It is something else having japanese authors, community and source codes/examples. I am japanese and I challenge anyone to try it.

Now I don't want to be apologetic. I wrote a book once and it is no easy thing. Try writing a book for a virtually non existant market and odds are you'll only be able to do so much. It was 2000 remember?

Could it be better? Sure, but that's why you have choice. I particularly prefer The Ruby Way. But then again, it doesn't make the Pickaxe less important. Without it probably there would take more time for Ruby to get in America. Unless you're willing to speak japanese :-P

Re: Deploy Your First JRuby on Rails App to Glassfish

That's another really nice tutorial. I hope more people jot down specifics for more deployment procedures under other app servers as JBoss, Websphere and what have you. On the other hand, before Rails I've developing heavily under 1.4.2 only, so I missed 1.5 and 1.6 altogether. I was assuming that since 1.6 is now OpenJava, someone would have it ported to work reliably on Mac OS X. Anyone knows something about it?

Re: Deploy Your First JRuby on Rails App to Glassfish

Hello again. I spent the whole day trying this tutorial with jruby 1.0 and several things went very wrong. I still don't know the whole reasons, perhaps the fact that I installed my jruby at /opt/local/jruby. After a lot of experimentation, I had to patch Goldmine to support jruby 1.0 (the trunk still used 0.9.9), I had to add all the other .jar dependencies from the jruby/bin (as backport). Then I had to patch it to generate a WEB-INF/web.xml with explicit jruby.home and gem.home set.

My database.yml was using variables as well (production was pointing to development for DRY sake) but the Java YAML parser complained and I had to copy the entire development setting to production as well. Only then my app ran in Glassfish.

Even then it didn't ran 100%: my testbed app was a slightly customized Redmine and file uploading still didn't work. I still didn't figured out what was the reason for that.

On the other hand I also had to patch ActiveRecord-JDBC because it recognizes :boolean as tinyint(1) and bit(1) but it complained about 'bit', so I added that to the adapter as well (through opening its class in environment.rb). Only then the unit and funcional tests passed. But the integration testes failed miserably return HTTP 500. Probably something in the CGI support that I still didn't figure out.

Anyone had the same trouble? I want to share some experiences on that. If anyone can read portuguese, take a look at my detailed report at (http://www.akitaonrails.com/articles/2007/06/10...). All the patches I applied to my working copy are there as well.

Re: One Step Closer To Goldspike Nirvana

Hey, that's very nice that you're helping improve Goldspike. Last time I checked (I did a blog post), the Maven xml were still pointing to the JRuby 0.9 or 1.0RC3 and some of the dependencies were old as well. I remember having to debug the servlet code and tweaking here and there to make it work. I successfully made Redmine run over Glassfish. But there's some gotchas: all functional and integration tests plainly fails, even though the app works. And the upload of files into the app also crashes the app, I still didn't figure out why. Did you got some of these issues as well?

Re: It’s ok Dreamhost, we didn’t like you much anyways.

Yeah, what can we say? Dreamhost is a commercial company that gets paid to deliver. DHH, Rails Core are all volunteer programmers that delivers without demanding. Now, for a company to start ranting like that it only shows their incompetence. There are several other hostings doing well enough and not complaining like a big baby. You're right: if someone needs really good support, go get a VPS (want something done right, do it yourself). Dreamhost has just shot itself in the foot with this unprofessional post.

Re: Why Google App Engine Shouldn’t Include PHP

You can already do (limited) PHP using Quercus over the JVM in the new GAE/J. Actually neither Python, nor Java are fully supported. To use the GAE you have to wrap yourself over the "limitations" in order to gain the benefits of being in a super-scalable platform.

Re: Look out Ryan Bates - There's a New Screencast in Town

Great work James, both plugins are amazing.
