in Why Google App Engine Shouldn’t Include PHP on Blog of Jeff
You can already do (limited) PHP using Quercus over the JVM in the new GAE/J. Actually neither Python, nor Java are fully supported. To use the GAE you have to wrap yourself over the "limitations" in order to gain the benefits of being in a super-scalable platform.

in Top 10 Reasons to Avoid the SimpleDB Hype on ryanpark.org
You are missing the point completely.
Databases != RDBMS. RDBMS is but "one" kind of database. Then you have hierarchical, object-based, document-based, etc.
SimpleDB is but one kind of non-RDBMS database. There are use cases that fit RDBMS, that are use cases that make RDBMS cry. That's where SimpleDB or other alternatives get into the game.
Just as simple as that. When all you know is a hammer, all your problems are nails.
This article is just wanting more traffic by generating FUD to newbies.

in Ruby +1 for Google Apps == Ungrateful? on ZachInglis.com
I'd say that Google never said that it will be Python only, just for the time being.
And another thing is that they actually could make it Python-only if they wanted, after all it is their product.
Heroku is Rails only and I see no one complaining.
And I am a Rails guy. The internet is about choice, so I choose not to give a damn about App Engine, and we're all good.

in The Crunch Mode Paradox: Turning Superstars Average on James on Software
What James says is not news but it is amazing how often we end up caught on this trap. It's easier than someone from the outside - with a cool head - can think of. It is so obvious that hurts. But it happens, all the time. It's actually the net result of a chain of small bad decisions and wrong attitudes/expectations down the road from the management, the client and the developers. No one person does it wrong alone: it's a chain reaction and starts in a very innocent way and it scalates very very fast like a snow ball speeding up down hill. I've been in crunch mode for some time now and I feel very very burnt out and exhausted.
Something similar was already said more than 30 years ago by some guy named Fred Brooks ...

Great work James, both plugins are amazing. I hope both screencasts help people realize how useful they can be.

in It’s ok Dreamhost, we didn’t like you much anyways. on smarticus-blog
Yeah, what can we say? Dreamhost is a commercial company that gets paid to deliver. DHH, Rails Core are all volunteer programmers that delivers without demanding. Now, for a company to start ranting like that it only shows their incompetence. There are several other hostings doing well enough and not complaining like a big baby. You're right: if someone needs really good support, go get a VPS (want something done right, do it yourself). Dreamhost has just shot itself in the foot with this unprofessional post.

in Don’t Hate The Pickaxe on The Puerto Rican Rails Dude
Ok, the Pickaxe is not the best book around. But remember: it is one thing to write about an american language, having english speaking authors and community. It is something else having japanese authors, community and source codes/examples. I am japanese and I challenge anyone to try it.
Now I don't want to be apologetic. I wrote a book once and it is no easy thing. Try writing a book for a virtually non existant market and odds are you'll only be able to do so much. It was 2000 remember?
Could it be better? Sure, but that's why you have choice. I particularly prefer The Ruby Way. But then again, it doesn't make the Pickaxe less important. Without it probably there would take more time for Ruby to get in America. Unless you're willing to speak japanese :-P

in Zed Shaw - Exposing the ‘Ghetto’ on The Puerto Rican Rails Dude
Dave, is that really you?
I am a Rails developer from Brazil and I also published my take on the subject.
As Dennis I can't judge this as I was not present in those episodes. Though as Zed targeted mainly you, it would be nice to have an statement about this.
Of course, it could possibly just be like throwing fuel to the flame, but a professional and explanatory (not apologetic) closure from you would be great for all of us that was just left with the Zed rant.

in One Step Closer To Goldspike Nirvana on smarticus-blog
Hey, that's very nice that you're helping improve Goldspike. Last time I checked (I did a blog post), the Maven xml were still pointing to the JRuby 0.9 or 1.0RC3 and some of the dependencies were old as well. I remember having to debug the servlet code and tweaking here and there to make it work. I successfully made Redmine run over Glassfish. But there's some gotchas: all functional and integration tests plainly fails, even though the app works. And the upload of files into the app also crashes the app, I still didn't figure out why. Did you got some of these issues as well?

in Apple to supply free ’software features and enhancements’ on Apple TV Hacks
Be aware! I just installed the official Apple's YouTube support through Update Software and it did what I feared: it reseted all my installed plugins and disabled both AFP and SSH. I didn't deleted the movies I had copied there but now they are not available.
I am reburning the Patchstick image I used last time and crossing my fingers to see if they didn't locked the USB port as well. I hope I can get those services running once again.
Anyone had the same troubles?
