A good post. Thank you, Randy, for being a voice of sanity. That your stance on this mirrors my own is, I'm sure, merely coincidental to its superiority. ;)

In all seriousness...yes.

Randy Well, my detractors don't agree about the sanity part :). You cracka' me up.

Thank you.

I thought of you on your birthday and wished you a happy one in my heart. Yay, Randissimo!
(Psst! Forty-one is just one year eviler on the twin scale than 40 was. ;) )

It makes me think of sky and water being playful. The colors are restful and relaxing--refreshing--and the lines are really uplifting and lighthearted.
I like! Good job, Randy!

A major difficulty in making calls like this is, of course, that there really isn't anything under the sun that doesn't offend someone.

in The End of White America? on ETC: Everyday Thoughts Collected
A link to the article online: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200901/end-of-wh...

I thought it was pretty good. Teaching this year has given me a whole new perspective on "whiteness" as expressed in the rural midwest--or at least in the rural southwest of Missouri. It isn't uncommon for me to want very badly to use a phrase in class that one of my husbands colleagues supposedly uses: "Do you want to DIE this ignorant?!?" (Not as a threat, of course, but simply uttered in disbelief.) I'll admit, it gives me a sense of satisfaction that eventually all the races are going to be more mixed. Maybe it will help take us a few steps closer to seeing people as PEOPLE before we mentally poke them into little boxes of preconception and begin complaining about them.

Grrrr...

Randy yeah ... I am not threatened at all by the races mixing ... at all. My nieces are half Mexican and I love it when I hear them squeal Tio Randy! or Uncle Randy! Either way those moments are some of my life favorites.

What I didn't like about the article is the implication that we have and are moving into "white identity politics." I never ... not once ... ever ... thought about my whiteness in my support of McCain/Palin. I also grew up on rap/hip hop/pop. I honestly never thought that was weird for little ol' white me to enjoy either. I enjoyed it because I liked it and it was a connection point with my friends. It had nothing to do with feeling "culturally bankrupt" and trying to "divest" myself of "whiteness."

That tone in the article was off-putting to me. I did like it overall but ... I don't ever think about my whiteness. I love the noble heritage in my lineage. I grieve the dishonorable parts as well but I never thought of it as being a "white" person thing. I also don't see that as any different than any other person of any other race.

well... maybe I didn't like the article as much as I thought. :)

Their shamefully horrid punctuation blows mine. My sixth grader writes better than this (and has more insight and maturity).

Randy Well, granted, any offspring of The Great Scott and Yourself is going to have good punctuation, unusual insight and before their time maturity. :)
B.T.Carolus's picture
B.T.Carolus I actually thought that, if this were a parody of the Phelpses by like Colbert, or SNL, or something, then it would be written like this. But your own writing...it's not supposed to sound like you're making fun of yourself. I especially like how at the end they didn't manage to capitalize the 'h' in the divine 'Him,' but they capitalized "Children of Destruction." Sort of shows where their priorities are.

btw, Randy, have I ever mentioned how much I like the editing feature? ;-)

That last line sounds like a challenge. Mayhaps your readers should all send you silly things for the new place. Hmmm...

Bad things happen when blood sugar gets low. Just sayin'. I love how you were able to calm down and be kind and friendly with the man and his wife. So many people would have treated them horribly throughout the whole mess. Christ said that out of his heart a man speaks. So maybe you had a little bit of crud in there, but it must have been just a little bit floating on the top, since what came out quickly afterward was an apology and congeniality.
(A silly aside for you... Great Scott had to rent a car to take three of his journalism students to a convention. He got hit at the airport BY AN EMPLOYEE OF THE RENTAL AGENCY. To top it off, immediately after impact, Scott's three students piled out of their car snapping pictures of everything! :) Moral: Always keep a spare journalism student with a camera in your car, kinda like a trunk monkey. ;) )

My deepest sympathies, Randy, for the migraines. What great ladies at your doctor's office! Wow!
Have you ever identified triggers for your migraines? Sometimes knowing some of these will allow you to avoid at least a few migraines.
I don't like it when you hurt. :p

This post amused me greatly, Randy. Sometimes we are so alike, and sometimes we are SOOOOO very different; it makes me laugh. I pull my dryer out from the wall to clean under it occasionally, usually in the fall or spring when the mice start coming in and the utility room begins to take on a certain "air" if it isn't done and poison or traps set. :p
I can't say that dead animals phase me much, though, and certainly not dried up husks of animals. Our cats leave us gifts on the porch daily. Half-eaten gifts. They leave us the "green wobbly bits" as the girls call them, and we have to sweep those and the bloody fur off the step almost every morning. (One Easter we opened the door to find a full-grown rabbit waiting for us, which amused us all greatly and gave the girls opportunity to tell their classmates that our cats killed the Easter bunny.) Dried critter husks are much tidier to clean up than oozy ones. :)
You didn't want to know any of this, did you?
What a great dryer salesman! Blessings on his head, for sure, and blessings on your now carcass-free home!
