Cisco just bought Pure Digital (Flip Video devices) - so maybe they'll make a play for Seesmic.

in The Rise of Microfame on Chris Brogan
Not two seconds before I read this post I said to my co-worker - "Did you know Chris Brogan is coming to Podcamp Toronto next week."

Co-workers response - "Who?". When I explained you were well known (microfamous) in social media circles he still didn't know who you were. Maybe not so microfamous for social media to everyone then. BUT when I said you were one of the co-founders of the Podcamps, the light went on.

So even if you are not microfamous within some "tribes" with smaller "families" you could be microfamous.

But doesn't it all boil down to being a big fish in a little pond vs. a little fish in a big pond?

BTW - I look forward to seeing/hearing you at Podcamp Toronto.

As always Chris, a very thought provoking post. You are right though, the collective WE/US is now greater than THEY/THEM ever were.

So let us sail forth onto this sea of change, but remember this ... Today is the Tomorrow you talked about Yesterday.

in A new theme: Defending my Thesis on Mathew's comments
Hey matthew,

I like this design. As a matter of fact I bookmarked the site last week and I was thinking about it. My stumbling block is that there are still so many free themes out there, I can't see paying for one, YET. Maybe if I had your traffic numbers I might consider a custom theme, but until then I'll stick with the freebies.

mathewi I felt much the same, Mike -- but I just couldn't find the combination of features I was looking for. I guess some things are worth paying for :-)

in Expand Your Blog Reading on Chris Brogan
I use my Google Reader extensively. I have 47 blogs on there divided into 5 categories based on my current interests. I have a hard time with the 47, I don't know how you people manage hundreds!

I've also started using FriendFeed and today I signed up for SocialMedian.

Twitter is always great for finding out new, interesting and varied blogs.

Oh and on Facebook, I belong to the Blog Network and it's really good for new and interesting blogs.

I agree with Chris Penn, all of these sites should act as billboards to point people back to your own site/blog. That is where the effort goes, that is where the payoff is.

in Conquering Fear of Blogging on Chris Brogan
As always a great post Chris!

I don't have those three demons to wrestle with when it comes to the WRITTEN word, but when I try to do a video blog or a podcast - forget about it!

I've dabbled in video podcasts (or vlogs or video blogs) and definitely realize I have the proverbial face for radio (self-consciousness). So to me this means I should do podcasts, but then the perfectionism kicks in. Of course both these are tied into the failure aspect.

Then it dawned on me - so what? Who beside me is going to know? So tonight I'm dusting off the tracks I recorded this weekend and I'm going to launch the podcast and SEO tips video blog I've been trying to perfect for weeks,

Thanks Chris - you are as always and inspiration!

in My Twitter Follow Policy on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
Christopher,

You hit the nail on the head with this post. I caught a tweet today from @Furrier about Yahoo running Google ads and posted a link to his story on my blog, hours later Techmeme and Techcrunch picked it up! For breaking news Twitter is my personal Canadian NewsWire as I follow only people I deem to be useful to help me with my blogging.

With Twitter the old axiom, "It's not what you know, but who you know that counts" is so true. A while back my focus changed from social media to SEO, I found some SEO people on Twitter and started to follow them and my knowledge base of SEO improved.

I haven't unfollowed anyone yet, but over the next few days I think I will be trimming down my followers list, I follow about 375 people and like you said the noise level can be a bit much.

So thanks for a timely post Christopher! And the next time you need a Digg don't hesitate to ask!

in Surest way NOT to Make Money Online: Blog about Making Money Online! on There's a Blog in my Soup!
Patrick

You make some really good points here, especially 1, 2 and 4.

Video is the next wave and to be successful a blogger will need to have video and audio to compliment the text- essentially a multimedia blog.

Twitter has been a godsend. I've been away from Twitter and my blog due to personal reasons for the past few weeks, I returned this week with a vengeance posting over 30 tweets and three posts in two days and my traffic is back up to where it was before my extended absence began.

BTW - proof that Twitter works? I'm here because I read your twit! Or is it tweet?

Anyway - great blog, I've added you to my roster on my reader and I look forward to your future posts!
