Hey, Kickstart here!
Just wanted to thank John for putting up the link and the story of this build. For those who may ot know, habitat for Humanity does these projects all over the world, including the US. I've done some benefits for them in year's past, but never had the time available to do an actual build.
The obvious question is: "Hey, there are lots of deserving folks right here in the US of A who need places to live. How come you're going all the way to Africa?" The answer is, timing and availability. The build that were scheduled for the time I had a open are there, so that's where I go. I'll get to take a few days after the actual build to do a camera safari and visit Victoria Falls, and I may see about the riding conditions there and report back on what I find.
It's going to be the trip of a lifetime, I know, and I sure am thankful to everyone here at NW Cycle News for your support and good wishes!

The comments above are thoughtful and very similar to the conversation which generated the article. I am also aware of the reticence that a lone female rider would have in that situation. No brainer there, of course.
But the signals mentioned, like the helmet behind the wheel, are the exact things that many newer riders have no clue about. My point was, and is, that everyone; dealer, rider, riding partner, needs to EDUCATE people about these things so folks know to do them. It does no good to look for a signal from a guy who didn't know that there WAS one.
I know the folks above get it: Now we just need to pass it on!

Oddly, I think this thing has a nice look to it. Sort of a sport bike/scooter feel. It would probably be a good commuting bike, but I bet it doesn't sound like a v-twin! LOL

I got in a bit too late to play the game....but I'm sureplanning to see the film when it comes out this weekend! Fonda back in a bike mmovie....Cage, Eva Mendes, Sam Elliott....how can you lose?
Definitely a movie to take a group of rider with you to see. Be sure to park right in front of the theater!

Thanks for the comments. As I noted, the idea was sent to me by a friend, but it sure resonated with me. I just had to share it.

Sounda like you had a great, if wet, ride! A bit farther than the one I went on, but no less wet, it seems.
Nice pics, too!

in New Year’s Ride - revisited on Northwest Cycle Report
Since people are asking, Here is my plan for New year's Day: I will arrive at the Creekside restaurant on Hiway 99, just north of 188th street in Lynnwood, at 10:45 AM. We'll have a light meal and talk over a potential destination (Snoqualmie Falls maybe?)and then head out. The ride is open to any rider on any kind of bike.
You'll know me right away...purple custom Heritage with small windshield and an eyeball on the tank. That and a big smile! Introduce yourself and ride along!

Bryan,
For what it's worth I may be able to answer your question. Do the custom choppers handle?
Yes. Depending on what you are trying to do. I've ridden bikes from sport bikes to chops with front ends at 16 inches over stock, and everything in between. A chopper will handle fine...it just won't hadnle like a shorter wheelbase bike. Ya can't take those quicku-turns with a front end that long, but it's a style of riding that is easily learned and has come positive benefits.
They mostly track like they are on rails, so highway riding is usually a pleasure. Unless you choose a rifid frame, the comfort level is high, but it's not like riding a bagger. The lean-back riding position is also way different from a hunched-over sportbike, but again, that can be learned.
I ride well over the 20K per year mark, and did so on choppers, too. It's just about what feels comfortable to you.
Ride safe!
