We have to develop something that doesn't feel like we're putting up a network just to make a call.

Hmm. Now there's the analogy. At 1:50AM my time, I get an idea. Now, to sleep and forget it.

Re: iPhone vs Blackberry - Survey Sample Size of One

I'm a Curve owner and I wouldn't trade it for an iPhone. I like the keys. I like that I can blast through my email. It gives me a lot of business power, and some web power. YES, I wish I had the iPhone's UI. I felt sad. There were all kinds of vibrant conversations going on, only I didn't know about them.

One part of the currency I crave from doing a blog is that conversation, especially on my blog, where I spend lots of effort building the posts to be conversation starters, not just fully formed ideas.

I'm with you, Fred. I want it to go both ways.

Re: My own personal Independence Day

First off, happy Birthday to your independence. Second, this is a great write-up and a must read of lessons learned by a pro in the space. I'm excited that you took the time to write it. I'm writing about multi-level marketing? Weird. That must be my Tyler Durden self. My last ten posts were about:

* website information
* YouTube- potential money model
* realtors and community
* podcasting as an information channel
* friendfeed (mostly a problem I was having)
* pointer to a report
* neat sales article that gave me a few ideas
* pointer to a presentation
* video about a book
* a flickr project

Wow, I seem so very interested in MLM and free stuff.

Please don't paint with Amanda Chapel colors, Stephen. I believe that social software are tools, and that they can enable enterprise, non-profit, personal, and other forms of communication and collaboration.

Twitter isn't the body of my work (thank the sweet little 8 3/4 pound baby Jesus).

Re: Social Media: just another term for Multi-Level Marketing

Sorry about that, Steven. My dad is a Stephen, so that's why I get it wrong all the time.

I think the points in general are good. I'm just not down for being called part of the "cumbaya and kissing" crowd, when my typical conversations off-blog are with Intel, IBM, Thomson Reuters, and the like. Defensive? Maybe. But also making the point that the tools and the movement are two different things. I'm subscribed to both at different levels.

Overall, I'm with you that the "let's all kiss and give everything away" mindset has to alter. But where/what/how? Sure, people know my name and might know what I'm known for, but it's not very participatory. We could all be Inquisitors, or whatever you want as the noun form of your following. We can all be lifehackers. We can be diggers. But you can't be chrisbrogannnnnnnnnners or whatever. I think the graphics confuse me a bit. When I think of hyperconnected, I think of hyperconnectivity as a skillset/practice more than a state of being. I opt to be this connected. My mindset is that I've set up listening posts, an ability to respond rapidly (or as close as I can), and an interest in performing those functions.

I think there are shades of hyperconnectivity: Scoble is a great communicator on Friendfeed, but he's ALSO a super great information absorber/parser. I parse information, but only pass through a small set. Robert passes through volumes.

There's something here, but it merits more conversations and more shades of understanding. You couldn't be more right about making sure that you work the way you're built to work. Being yourself and doing more of that is a lot in line with the book StrengthsFinder 2.0 and the other books in that vein that teach us to pay close attention to the best parts of us, and compensate in other ways for the not-so-best parts.

Great post!

Re: Top 10 Blog Monetization Strategies, Ranked In Order

To answer your question, I make beer money on the random affiliate links from Amazon, and the old posts that have a bit of adsense stuffed into them. There's no dayjobquitting salary coming from the blog, but that's by design.

I do run an occasional paid advertisement on my blog that pays 2.5 mortgages per month, but I'm choosy, thus no ad for January or February.

My money is primarily from my agency (newmarketinglabs.com), my speaking gigs, and then the random thing like my upcoming book.

Swell list!

Re: Is Selling Content the Future of the Blogosphere?

Ah, then you've missed the real key to what I found there. You wouldn't pay for the content you're already reading. That continues free and you can go about your merry business.

But what if the premium material was something actionable? The information in the briefing I referenced in my post was something that IT departments will use to make decisions on purchasing for 2009. It's something that drives real world value.

Would you ever conceive of a time or situation where information given to you would be worth more than you paid?

Photoshop tips, guitar lessons, whatever. If you write up how cool the Canon 5D Mark II is, I'll think that's cool. If you then go on to tell me 100 things I didn't know how to do with it? That might be worth a few bucks. If you show me how my company can use those cameras to bring in $1.2 Million next year, then you can charge me the moon.

Re: Wikinomics » Blog Archive » Comments: valuable contributions or ramblings of the inebriated homeless?

Comments have become the best part of my blog. It makes me angry and fist-raising at RSS, because comments aren't part of the back and forth that gets captured via RSS. I read this post, but what if I didn't read Jude's comment? I'd miss the next evolution of the story.

The story doesn't stop at the end of the post. That's why Jeff Jarvis and Rafat Ali get to blog almost daily about newspapers falling off.

We've discovered the next step. They just don't know how to get rich off it yet.

I love your thoughts on my blog as well as on your own. There are pattern-rec and visual-rec softwares already leaking into the mainstream that can track faces, certain keyed objects, etc.

They're doing it. Social media people are somehow on a higher moral ground by default? Perez Hilton would disagree.

Money isn't evil. There are lots of ways to be evil around money, but the presence of money isn't evil.

@bg- you're the second person to cite a conflict of interest. I'm not in the contest. In this instance, I'm someone marketing in a third party capacity. They paid me to market and offer a contest that I'm not part of. Explain the conflict? Is it a conflict to pay for marketing? Not sure why, but my posts where I think I've said something really meaningful are always the worst "performers" from any kind of audience point of view. That part can exist just nicely, but you deciding that all blogs must follow that same tack is like suggesting that you know the best and only way to communicate.

I sure didn't write about SEO or link spamming above, so I'm not sure how you equate this with sponsored content. In fact, Patel's strategy that you quote is an attempt to get free SEO benefits, so quite the opposite of paid.

Is it noise because someone pays? Do you read magazines? Wired, maybe? Can you read it without the ads? no.

If you think the only way for corporations to participate is in straight "earned" media, you might have to revisit how that kind of ink has been earned. It's not as lily-white as you seem to feel.

As for me? You didn't really just ask me if I was serious, right? Yes, it was backed up elsewhere.

BUT, what you wouldn't necessarily think to back up are all the places you've used your gmail account as a key to get in, etc. Think about this as having all your keys stop working, all your passwords, all your access.

In fact, if we went a step out, this would be a conversation about the potential for MASSIVE lockout by losing a core centralized account. I never know where she's going next, but in that winding country road way, not that "lost" way.

That's my vote.

Re: 10 bold moves for a more creative you - Day #3

Meeting you was every bit as exciting. I found more! : )

Here's the thing about the personal brand schtuff: first, if YOU say it, who cares? It's what others say about you that matters. Second, if they say it, where did they get their cues? You! (Tricky, eh?)

Madonna is/was/is an amazing study in brand management. She reinvented herself once a year. She pushed to stay relevant. Her goal: absorb new trends, synthesize, repurpose, distribute. And she did it VERY well for several years.

What goes into making a brand is exactly what Madonna worked on so hard. She synthesized lots of ideas, presented them in a new off-kilter way, and repeated her message around her ideas. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Branding with a bow on top.

You, sir, are a great guy. Do great things. Do useful things. Do things people haven't done the same way just yet, and it will be brandtastic. Besides, if you're to accept what Brand Obsession Disorder talks about, you might be up the wrong tree.

Re: Facebook Is Not Your MySpace? : Mutual Contacts

You've said it well. I've never even seen the video. I probably never will. I love listening to Garrison Keillor from time to time, but haven't ever watched his show. He makes great radio (in doses). I love Marketing Over Coffee, but even though Chris and John are handsome enough dudes, I don't really need to see them saying what they're talking about.

And yet, I still think the money overall is in video. Not because MTV lost track of their empire, but because we're a consumer economy, and we're expanding out into new communications tools, if nothing more than a means to fuel spending. Don't believe me? The hottest selling segment of digital cameras right now? Picture frames. Digital picture frames. Why? Because we out-purchased the marketplace on high end point and clicks.

So, my answer isn't from the heart and soul of good content, but from what consumers are doing with their dollars. They're buying gear that makes video, and they're using video as part of their communications methods. They are consuming more and more video content (over 10 million YouTube videos in Dec 07 alone, and just YouTube alone), and that number is still bouncing up.

Is audio better? For lots of things. So's text. And yet...

: )

Re: Guy Kawaskai on Darren Rowse on Seth Godin

Seth's explained it before, right Seth? I want to share a bit, too.

When I go to events where I know the "big names" will be, I have a racing rush of these thoughts in my head:

* They won't remember me.
* They don't think I'm worthy.
* They think I'm a hack.
* They are so much more connected.
* They won't tell me where the cool parties are.
* They think I'm an idiot.
* I'm not nearly as popular.

Steve Garfield is to be credited with part of how I learned to integrate with the big names. He said this to me at his kitchen table, "You know, people are just people. They might have different levels in different things than you, but it's all the same."

He was dead on.

I can tell you most of the fault lines of every one of the big names on the internet from meeting them. I've been surprised every time, because right behind every confident external view, there's something that I discover that lets me know they're just as unsure about SOMETHING.

As for looks? I've simply never chosen to compete on my physical traits. Instead, I use charm to muscle my way past people's impression of my looks. That way, I have a fighting chance.

This is probably one of my top 5 favorite posts for 2008. Thanks for it, Ann. In a way, I think animals serve that purpose. My daughter stops at every dead bug we find on the sidewalk. We saw a big dead butterfly the other day, with about a hundred ants carrying it away. She was really excited, repeating my often-used words back.

"Daddy, they are going to have a FEAST on that butterfly."

I explain animal death as a food cycle, and she gets that.

Several steps down the road, as we're talking about a dead worm, two dead beetles, and the spot where she wanted to show me the dead possum, all the while discussing how this is food, she said:

"I wouldn't want to see a dead kitten. That would be really sad."

And we walked on in silence for a while, until we saw a squirrel almost die trying to cross the road. She watched, excited and happy.

"A dead squirrel is okay, Daddy."

--

You're on to something here, Ann.

Re: In Case of Emergency

John Gray's book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, states that men do that all the time. We thread your biography back over into our own world. If we haven't had the same situation, we tie it on somewhere else. I tie this on to my "life is capricious" fear.

Shortly before my daughter was born, my cat, Etoile, fell off my shoulder and snapped his neck. He died within a handful of seconds, looking into my eyes, in my arms.

I immediately transferred this fear into parenting. Just how many things can happen? Time is never guaranteed, etc. I have strange, vivid visions daily of things that will take my family from me.

With that as a backdrop, thanks for sharing your story. The part that meant the most to me was the letter at the end. I have a philosophy about death. Celebrate everything, including the life, the bad parts, and the death. Celebrate it however you can.

I'm grateful for your story, for your sharing, and for you specifically.

Re: Punk’d

We had a lot of laughter in our household, too. I'm grateful for it, and try to recreate the craziness at my house. My daughter is already fitfully aware of sarcasm and also the fact that more than half of what I tell her isn't exactly true. He's more up for the physical humor.

Thrilled to see blue milk pranks are alive and well.

Re: Evergreen Christmas

You and I have talked a little about my holiday blues, and you probably understand that kind of stuff better than most.

I've had a rough 10 or so years. Ever since all the old people in my life started dying off in collector's sets, all the rituals unraveled. My grandparents were the hinge on all our Christmas events. They were the nexus through which we had no fewer than 7 distinct Christmas experiences every year (we did a lot of visiting).

It's also that time of year that reminds me how selfish I've been ever since birth. I'm a greedy kid in reform. I want it to be all about me. Or I did, and now that I know that, I'm trying to fix that part of me. I'm much better these last two years.

Also, it turns out that when I was going through tough financial times, the only time of year I couldn't hide it was Christmas. Sending out hand made stuff is quaint and is probably more meaningful, but it also meant that I was poor that year, and couldn't return favors.

This year, I stumbled upon magic. Pure, unfiltered magic. I raised money. I asked friends from the web to drop a few bucks into a chipin widget, and I matched another $600 (was $500, but I spent some more) of my own. Result? $1700 spent for toys and books for kids.

I feel like a million bucks.

I'm never NOT going to do that again, because it helped with the blues.

But, on to rituals.

I'm in a really weird place. Since spawning, I've realized that my children require rituals, and that this falls on me. This is horrible! This is like Spiderman - "With great power comes great responsibility." WTF? I'm a kid, too!!!!

So, that's tricky. I'm still trying to make "real" rituals that stick, and I realize that a ritual is just repetition with marketing, but shit. I'm somehow saying that these are traditions? My parents stole from my grandparents. So we're both screwed there. They don't know any better than me how to create the next set of rituals. It's not like there's a planning council.

Anyhow, thanks for sharing. I'll mail you a check.

Re: Stagira’s Marketing UnSummit

It was such a great mix of people there.
