I liked it. To be honest, they could spend a gazillion dollars redeveloping everything for cocoa/ruby whatever its called these days, but you'd get so little benefit from it would be proper waste of time. it works. its works well (with the exception of a few bits and bobs). and like Joe says below. It saves rebooting your mac. I think there's a huge amount of nonsense talked about this stuff, by peeps that have very little experience or need to comment on it. some peeps just like picking a fight I think.
If you use the hardware/software from Apple. good. if you don't. Shut it up. Simple man.

in Usable 3D Geometry Please. Could There Ever Be a SolidWorks ‘Catalyst’? on SolidSmack
you really think ever could use spaceclaim? I dunno man. Its easy. but not THAT much easier duder.. DS demo'ed some wicked Live Shape-based stuff at Devcon last year that let's users play with geometry in a controlled environment (say mockups of potential new products, with different variants and options etc). It then provided the data on trends and such. you know.. crowdsourcfabulous

Righto, easy, but still a process and more work to make changes (sometimes). There's always going to be lining up a process with any CAD system. but SpaceClaim isn't even close to what I'm thinking product design could be. I'm talking sort of a 'living features' with inherent history that resolves, reassociates and adjusts based on geometry creation, simultaneously between users. No front-end data management process. That all happens real-time, behind the scenes and across the environment. Too much? I don't think so. I just don't think there's many thinking of how we actually design products and taking the step-by-step, click-by-click process out. I need to write an article dude :)

but its a sweet thing eh? the search stuff is fantastic - sure, needs some work, but it's functional and usable.. but for me, it's the part duplicate bit that really nails it.

oooo, that is pretty cool, but yeah a little watercolory. I was thinkin' something like Penguin for Rhino, but something that, ya know, extends the sketch lines, sorta ghosts or bluelines them.

Now then Mr. West, one thing you can't do is use NURBS as a plural.. Seriously...
Don't...
Wait, what the hell is plural of NURBS? NURBSes, NURBII...ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (as Al runs into a dark corner, recalling a drunken argument with a former editor of Cadalyst about the correct pluralisation of Octopus).

I love your guy/gal's email.. very true - I guess what's interesting is that while many of the vendors are espousing how much 3D can do for product development and industrial design, it always seems to come back down to starting with 2D sketching - something that's not going to go away, not going to disappear from the toolset and skillset of the industrial designer.. as a good friend and advisor of mine said to me over a rather boozey lunch - " the problem with using 3D as a design tool at the very front end of the design process is that clients tend to think, when seeing a 3D model, is that the design is finished, complete and ready to go to tooling"...

awesome. yeah, the design starts in the head. the 3d is the visualization of it all. I love starting with sketches. and ya know, I love a cool rendering as much as the next person, but seeing some really nice conceptualization with sketches, especially showing it as part of the WHOLE process, that adds another dimension right there.
Chris O
Exactly... when people look at a 3D model, they start paying attention to details that you may have not actually put effort into yet. It presents the idea at a level of detail that let's people judge what hasn't been refined yet. In a sketch, you can leave the details out or fill an area of complexity with noise to suggest that something's going on, but it hasn't been resolved yet. I've been hit by this in school... I'll start on the 3D model and I'm instantly judged on aspects of the design that I haven't even thought of yet.
Of course, I think 3D tools can still be used in sketching for underlays and perspective guides. But it's strange that once you present a computer rendering at any level, it's assume that every detail is open for discussion, and that doesn't seem to happen with sketches.

So true Al. A lot of our designs at Barry-Wehmiller start off with a rough sketch on 99% of the assemblies and parts on my paper pad.
Now some designs I have made by dropping in existing parts to a new assembly, rough position them and start modifying stuff to fit on the fly.

yeah - I wonder what Logitech are up to - I'm off to see them in the next couple of months - to have a poke around their R and D labs, so I'll let you know (if they don't get me with the cursed NDA).. like you said, things are changing quick..
as you know, I got my macbook earlier this year and just the multitouch is wonderfully productive.. I've been messing with the OSX version of Rhino and the multitouch implementation isn't quite there, but what is, work and works very nicely.. two fingers to rotate the model.. its slick and REALLY intuitive..

I spent a day at Dassault Systemes DEVCON event in paris this week. They consistently demod using the WiiMOte as a means of interacting with 3D data - demoing how the consumer electronics avialable now, should be able to work with 3D design software...
During an interview, the CEO (and later, the head of R+ D in a chat with me) also hinted that DS are working on some form of hardware device in their labs. so, you might get Catia (more likely 3DVIA) branded hardware - or maybe even SolidWorks..
Oh and I'm currently plating a 12" Cintiq tablet - love it - with the direct edit tools in SolidWorks, its pretty slick once you change the default assignments for the buttons.. but the first thing I did was duct tape one of the new small SpaceTravellers to the lower left hand side.. and it ROCKS man

in MAc Addict Alert! How To Use SolidWorks on a Mac on SolidSmack
I just went apple nuts man - got myself a macbook air and for the first few months, I ran bootcamp and did everything the old way - then I decided time was enough and deleted the partition. No, I don't run much cad on it, but I have a workstation for that. What I do have on it at the moment is iRhino (you should check out the testing they're doing on an OSX version of Rhino, it rocks) and HyperShot - both work well.. What else is there in the way of CAD for the mac? not a lot - there's ashlar vellum, vectorworks, couple of other bits and bobs.. will the likes of solidworks ever port over? nope - its too damned expensive.. Siemens got stung with the Apple platform with NX and they're skipping releases..
I do love this mac thing though - its kinda pretty.. Mike said "paying 2-3 times as much for a computer just to have a neat looking case, a neat light up logo, or a fun to play with dock thingy" - umm - not here, I paid around the same as I would for a decent small, lightweight laptop that actually works, the light up logo I never see and the dock is OK - just the same as the bar in XP.. but one thing is does do is power on instantly - that's worth the price differential alone. I can pop it open, work on my reviews, our accounts, email, look at videos of monkeys on youtube, whatever and as with most things, if you can attribute a cost to the time you work, and hence the cost of the time you do nothing but watch a machine boot, then it doesn't take too long to pay back the extra...

when they had SW World at Cesears the other year, "lucky" Jon had to carry a letter that allowed him access to the venue, but not to the playing tables.. When they go back to LV, get jon on a quiet moment, go to cleopatra's barge bar and get the story.. its the only place to hear a story like that dude..

People who don't use Mac have a great deal at stake in this argument. We have fought to get the software to where it is in terms of functionality and stability, and to throw it all away just for a small minority of users (and non-users) whose heads have been turned by marketing gimmicks would be unfortunate. Throwing all of the necessary development $$ into a Mac version would be a colossal waste of money.
How many more customers will someone like SolidWorks gain by adding a Mac version? Very few. If people really need something like SW, they are using something like SW on Windows because nothing is available on Mac.
How many customers will SW lose because they don't change to Mac? None until maybe another SW-esque product makes the jump. And by that, I don't mean NX, Rhino, VectorWorks, AutoCAD, Bricscad, Alias, et al, I mean Inventor or Solid Edge.
If you don't buy your own CAD software that you use for a living, shut it up.
