I think banners are non engagement (metrics support this), meaning you can pretty much get the same level of effectiveness with a flat, low cost execution. There are a few rare exceptions. So actually, not dead. But I wouldn't want to work on them. And I'll re-state my caveat, I didn't grow up on the Ad side, so take it with a grain of salt.
It's a good question though.

Banners are still around - but the percentage of spend one devotes to these tactics is diminishing. Any good integrated campaign respects the power (albeit small).

"Twitter Star". Well that's one of the reasons I'm making the move. It's time for me to dig into something that helps business in a different way. It's not advertising, hell its' not even marketing and I'm looking forward to the challenge
@AH, no I did not do the Subway Pitch. I had left agency.com by the time that went down.
@marge when is the right timing?
I provided a few more details here.

It's worth a shot. I believe in the vision.

Couple of things
1. Love Bank: This is exactly the theory behind my POV on "micro-interactions:" It's sound and it works.
2. AMAZING analysis on this. Scott, I feel like you must have been in my head. Now please get out. ;-)
3. Gavin, you rock.
4. Thank you for writing this post and sharing hope.

Robert,
Thanks for picking this up. It's an amazing story. I hope the MSM outside of Chicago covers it. Though having it posted here is almost as good. ;-)

Robert,
Roger and I now talk on the phone on a Regular basis because he took a originally took chance and called me out of the blue. He's a great resource for getting your creative juices flowing and making you think. And to use his words—he's "a trip".
Glad you both met.

Robert,
I feel the same. I'm sickened after reading Kathy's post. And sad. And angry. Not sure what else to say.

I love the Sound of Searls Media and I'm going to refer to the Internet as the Alternet from now on (in honor of Al Gore of course)

Hi Robert,
Nice point about getting poked in the ribs at the party. Though if it were a celeb like the one referenced in my hypothetical situation *hint someone like a Paris Hilton. She would probably shrug it off and say:
Bacardi just paid me 5k for that text message sucker!
Then my guess is that she wouldn't get poked anymore. At least not in the context we're talking about. :)

OK, I will. But first let me say that I like how you are moderating comments this way. It's very conversational. Nicely done.
So, my blog is Logic + Emotion. Where do I start? Eight months ago nobody new who I was. Now, it seems that most people who I run into have heard of the blog. It simply blows me away and I feel pretty undeserving of such good fortune.
That said my blog is about all things related to creativity, innovation and design. I do these visuals that people seem to like (and share). Basically my theory is that we live in complex times and I use my knowledge of infomation design to help simplify through the use of visuals.
Actually, a nice way to get a snapshpot of my blog is to flip through the presentation here:
http://darmano.typepad.com/logic_emotion/2006/1...
And here is my canned statement:
Logic+Emotion exists at the intersection of Marketing 2.0, Brand Engagement and Experience Design—where passive consumers are transformed into active participants.
Hope that helps. Nice blog you have here too.

Hey, great post. The Marketing Profs blog is terrific. It's like an all you can eat buffet (but in a good way) :)
Here's a few of my faves:

So many good ones. So hard to choose.... I also recommend checking out the blogrolls of the blogs we are linking to here. That is a great way to find some keepers.
