That's important to keep in mind. Another thing...some applications make multiple requests to a file in order to download it (such as any application that uses Microsoft BITS, like IE7 does). That can significantly skew your numbers.

Mack D. What's more important, in my opinion, is that people get introduced to the idea...regardless of what they think it is called.

Something has come along to fill a major void in communications (cost-effective time-shifted audio-visual communication). We currently refer to that "something" as podcasting.

Mack D. The podcaster should try to educate their audience about these advantages, but I don't think they should come up with ways to force their audience to use the feeds.

Mack D. Thanks.

We've done a lot of work at Podcast Spot (http://www.podcastspot.com) on making the tools easy to use. You don't have to understand the how. None of the tech stuff you mention as required for your hosting (http://podonomics.com/godaddy-hosting-officiall...) is necessary. All you do is create a free account then click Add Episode. Pretty simple.

And we're always working to make it easier. You should try it! Tell you what...sign up and use Podcast Spot for a month (we'll give you however much free upload you need). Produce your podcasts like normal, but do a duplicate at your Podcast Spot account. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well it works! Not only is it easy, but you get media conversion, BitTorrent seeding, and a bunch of other cool features all included.

You said: "I can start a blog in just 3 easy steps in under 5-minutes. I expect something similar for podcasting."

Podcast Spot is that solution for podcasting. Try it for yourself and I think you'll agree!

Mack D. There are two issues. Number one, I didn't have php_curl.dll enabled in my PHP configuration. Secondly, line 62 of "widget.php" is wrong for Windows I guess. You have:

$path = substr($path, 0, strrpos($path, '/') + 1);

Changing that to:

$path = substr($path, 0, strrpos($path, '\\') + 1);

Makes it work. I'm not a PHP expert...so I am not sure how to change this into something that will work on all platforms.

Mack D. The Tablet PC and Ultra Mobile PC platforms in particular are still very new, and I wouldn't say they have failed. In the case of the Tablet PC, most of the extra functionality has been rolled right into Windows.

I would say that Windows Mobile and Windows XP Embedded have been very successful for the company, and both have built upon the lessons learned from some of the items you've mentioned.

The point is, it's very hard to look at any one of the items you mentioned in isolation and declare that it has failed. So many of Microsoft's products are evolutionary, building upon previous trial and error.

Mack D. Perhaps the "platform company" idea simply needs to be fleshed out more. In my books, a platform entails more than an announcement. It needs solid design, marketing, partners, and most important of all - developers.

I would say the Xbox has actually been a very successful platform for Microsoft, one of the few that doesn't have a lot of developers behind it besides big companies (though that will be changing with Game Studio and XNA). Sure it's lost a lot of money, but look at the impact it is having on the gaming and entertainment markets. Profits will come, eventually. (Heck, Amazon.com has lost boatloads of money over the years, yet you'd be hard pressed to find someone who calls it a huge failure.)

Also - maybe it's as simple as viewing your lists (which are very good btw) not as lists of failures, but lists of lessons. You certainly can't fault Microsoft for trying things.

Mack D. How is listening to Justin Timberlake on an MP3 player or computer any different than on a CD or minidisc? Music is music, and I think you can connect with it using any device or medium. Attending a Justin Timberlake concert, on the other hand, could have an impact.

Some other thoughts: CDs take time to create and burn, digital music can be searched, the random button accomplishes what you want with not skipping music.

Mack D. It's true that Microsoft has done some clever marketing to get the numbers I have mentioned (clever depends on your point-of-view I guess).

That said though, I think the key thing is that over 50 million people now have media center functionality in their homes. What would the world look like if everyone had such functionality? I bet we wouldn't be writing about it anymore - it would just seem natural.

So if WMC having some success means that media center functionality in general becomes more accepted and understood, then I'm all for that!

Mack D.

Seems like you picked it out of the air.

Mack D. Maybe I am not understanding what you're getting at. You mean to tell me that podcasting will become irrelevant in January 2008 if consultants don't change the language they use?

No offense, but podcasting isn't going anywhere, regardless of the changes you plan to make to your communications.

Mack D.

Mack D. The podcaster should try to educate their audience about these advantages, but I don't think they should come up with ways to force their audience to use the feeds.

Mack D. What's more important, in my opinion, is that people get introduced to the idea...regardless of what they think it is called.

Something has come along to fill a major void in communications (cost-effective time-shifted audio-visual communication). We currently refer to that "something" as podcasting.

Mack D. That's important to keep in mind. Another thing...some applications make multiple requests to a file in order to download it (such as any application that uses Microsoft BITS, like IE7 does). That can significantly skew your numbers.

Mack D.
