in What if Apple sued Palm, would Microsoft come to the rescue? on last100
Good call Steve. I'd be surprised if Apple were able to sue Palm and win. Then again, the patent system is mostly broken anyway.

Great post! I've been saying the same thing recently - Twitter Search is vitally important. "If you leave this blog post with nothing else, learn that search is what matters." Spot on!

in Why Chrome is a win-win for Google on last100
IE8 has had the isolated tabs feature since March, so it's not a completely new idea. I completely agree that Chrome is going to gain market share. Another benefit might just be that it will enable Google to build more intensive web apps in the future, as Chrome and other browsers get faster and more reliable.

Dude, I feel your pain. We at Podcast Spot have been doing device-specific audio and video conversion for TWO YEARS but most people don't know that (upload a WMV and we'll encode it for the Xbox, iPod, etc). We're small and without a lot of money for marketing, we're in Canada, and we have the word "Podcast" in our name. It's harsh.

I also like what you say about sustainability. Building something you're proud of and something that people want is what it's all about. Go Viddler!

The problem with making these excellent tools part of Twitter itself is that they'd be unavailable half the time ;)

Actually the @ was the first character. The tweet was: "@rex Sucks doesn't it? I almost don't know how to use Twitter without the IM interface!" Also didn't work with: "@pcnovels Saw that, replied, thanks for commenting!"

Hi Evan...on line 212 of widget.php, there is a check to see if the Twitter update contains @username...I found this wasn't working with "strpos" so I changed it to "stristr" and now it seems to work. Oddly, hashtags work fine with "strpos".

Hi Evan, I have found the problem. There are two issues. Number one, I didn't have php_curl.dll enabled in my PHP configuration. Secondly, line 62 of "widget.php" is wrong for Windows I guess. You have:

$path = substr($path, 0, strrpos($path, '/') + 1);

Changing that to:

$path = substr($path, 0, strrpos($path, '\\') + 1);

Makes it work. I'm not a PHP expert...so I am not sure how to change this into something that will work on all platforms.

Nope, there is no cache.dat, only: friendfeed.php, JSON.php, readme.txt, screenshot-1.jpg, and widget.php. I tried deactivating all plugins except for the FriendFeed Activity one, to no avail. Tried sticking an empty cache.dat in the folder, still didn't work. Thanks for helping to track this down.

Hi Evan...running on Windows, so I gave "Everyone" full control access to the folder, same issue unfortunately.

I'm using WordPress 2.5.1, with PHP5, and I still get "%BEG_OF_TITLE%Recent Activity%END_OF_TITLE%" in the Admin. On the site itself, the page just stops executing after spitting out the title "Recent Activity".

Any ideas?

I was going to write the same thing as Gomez...glad he beat me to it.

I share your concerns and have thus far not given Disqus a try. Maybe I will when they have the ability to export comments.

Would have been nice to have a custom UI, but I guess something is better than nothing :)

Yeah it looks good, but not in Opera 9.25 unfortunately. If you can make it look good in Safari, why not Opera? It's not that far behind.

Was interested in learning more about it...but couldn't. The brochure and presentation links on the front page are broken. The links on the left go to last year's content. Best of all, the contact emails they have listed bounce.

What a great start TIE Toronto!

in Are you watching more online video during writer’s strike? Or not? on last100
I'm really glad Leno and Conan are back, because that's pretty much the only TV I watch! Well, that and hockey.

I would say getting an iPod touch has caused me to watch more online video than the writer's strike has. Podcasts and integrated YouTube make it so easy.

Steve, you make some valid points, I'll give you that. On the other hand, who would have thought that Starbucks, a coffee company, would launch a record label? Stranger things have happened is all I'm saying :)

I write about memes that are on Techmeme, and I link to Techmeme, but my blog is never listed as part of the discussion. I'm fine with that, however, and I think your post here explains why...Techmeme is increasingly about the mainstream. It's great for finding a bunch of articles on a topic, but not so great for finding a bunch of individual voices.

Robert Scoble I still read about 800 feeds every evening and publish the best stuff that catches my eye at http://www.google.com/reader/shared/14480565058...

What's really interesting is that companies have figured out how to game the blogosphere. Amazon's Kindel is a good example of that. They put all of our blogs on it. Gave us exclusive early looks at it. And then invited us all to the press conference this morning where a TON of blogs came out from it.

But you put to words trends I've noticed happening for some time.

in Windows Media Center — a Microsoft success story? on last100
@David

I see what you're saying. It's true that Microsoft has done some clever marketing to get the numbers I have mentioned (clever depends on your point-of-view I guess).

That said though, I think the key thing is that over 50 million people now have media center functionality in their homes. What would the world look like if everyone had such functionality? I bet we wouldn't be writing about it anymore - it would just seem natural.

So if WMC having some success means that media center functionality in general becomes more accepted and understood, then I'm all for that!
