in Citizen Journalism Gets a Test on Oracle AppsLab
Not quite sure that I would call tweeting "RIP MJ" journalism, especially if I just rehash what I just read on TMZ or some other tweet. Then again, I also wouldn't call a lot of what I see on TV these days journalism either.

How does one measure the accuracy of twitter vs. the mainstream media? What is the unit of measure you'd use for that? Just wondering... (and again, I am not a big fan of the accuracy/quality of many mainstream media outlets).

Jake The problem is that journalism is increasingly more about speed and scoop and less about accuracy, which is why services like Twitter have marginalized reporting the news.

The only way to measure accuracy is in hindsight, so based on the examples I've given and others, Twitter does a good job. This isn't a good way to measure, since no one tracks false reports on Twitter, or at least, they're quickly forgotten.

I'm not advocating either medium as better.

Given that the 2140 has all but disappeared from the HP website and is only available at a few internet retailers (and good luck finding the HD model), how should we interpret this?

in Mike Arrington’s CrunchPad leaps toward reality - do you care? on Liliputing
Yes, I do care. While I would have preferred a smaller device (10 inch screen max), I do want something along the lines of a larger-form-factor iphone for in-the-house walking-around/sitting-on-the-couch surfing/RSSing/skyping/chatting. A keyboard isn't necessarily required (as proven by the fact that I do a lot of that today on my iPhone instead of my netbook).

Obviously, a lot depends on the quality of the software and things like instant-on.

Bill I talked with an HP rep yesterday morning. He estimated that the high res screen will become available in 2 to 3 weeks.

Why wouldn't it appear in the US. Olevia has sold TVs in the US for several years.

My HP2133 has a 3-prong power adapter. And I don't recall ever having a problem finding a 3-prong outlet at my favorite coffee places (incl. Starbucks. Only downside: all my European adapters were two-pronged, so I had to go buy a 3-pronged for, uh, 99 cents at Frys.

in RovAir short term 3G rental mini-review on Liliputing
I am curious -- did you try to connect to an open access point on the show floor? I checked my mail (and a few blogs) a couple of times from the floor and my iPhone always picked up several WiFi access points (I chose to use 3G, which worked fine).

I really wish one of the mobile carriers were to follow the European example and offer pay-per-day data plans. I used to have a Spring EVDO card and loved it, but with free WiFi at Starbucks and many other of my favorite locations I just couldn't justify it any longer.

I tend to use different passwords for different important sites for a reason. Trusting them all to a startup service thus doesn't seem like the right thing for the sake of convenience.

Besides, a lot of my financial accounts nowadays use additional authentication verification mechanisms beyond a mere userid/password combo and thus likely wouldn't work anyway.

How about someone create an open source version that I can run on my own machine, so there is no need to store the passwords on a 3rd party system somewhere in the cloud? (open source, of course, so I can review the code to make sure it doesn't phone home).

in Kindle for Beach Reading? on Zatz Not Funny!
It's not a Kindle, but my wife and I just took two Sony Readers to a beach vacation in Belize. They both survived fine (though the idea of a ziplock bag is a good one for future travel). Taking enough books along for two for a week would have severely impacted our "travel light" style.

in Gigabyte M912 available in Germany sans operating system? on Liliputing
If you plan on picking one up in Germany, be aware that German keyboards are quite a bit different than US keyboard layouts. For starters Y and Z are swapped (QWERTZ instead of QWERTY), and then there are Umlaut character keys. Plus a lot of the non alpha/number symbols are on different keys. It's easy to get used to if it's your only computer, but if you regularly switch between different machines with different keyboards, you'll not have a lot of fun.

I've been wondering if that fire is the reason why HP isn't offering any additional/replacement batteries for the Mini.

in Install Windows XP on a Mini-Note (USB stick method) on Liliputing
Brad, is there no way to preserve the system restore partition, i.e., just replace the larger VISTA partition with XP? While I don't think I'd ever voluntarily go back to VISTA, it might in a pinch be useful if you're on the road and the XP partition somehow becomes corrupted. Granted, I could also carry around my 1 GB USB drive to restore XP from scratch.

Anyway, I tried to leave the VISTA restore partition behind and XP installed okay, but then the machine wouldn't boot from the hard disk (always got some sort of "bad OS" error at startup). Booting from the flash drive worked, but mucking with the boot.ini didn't help.

Incidentally, when I then tried to do the XP install again with the same memory stick, the text mode option always failed with "INF file txtsetup.sif corrupt or missing, status 18" error. Bizarre. So now my machine is back to Vista factory image and I created a new XP image on my USB drive, this time with SP2 slipstreamed in. Wish me luck :)

Brad Linder I started out with a SUSE system, so I didn't have a Vista recovery partition to play with. But as for the second installation failing, I have noticed that for some reason this happens to me a lot when installing XP from a USB flash drive. Re-creating the bootable flash drive should work. It just means spending another 15-20 minutes.
pure What happened at last? any success in keeping vista partition and restoring that partition after installing XP properly

in HP will offer Mini-Note XP install disc on May 15 on Liliputing
Well, Dell isn't going through that configuration hassle for just six weeks. They have (AFAIK) indicated that they will continue to do the downgrade for their customers even beyond June 30.

So I wonder if HP will ship out the downgrade disks to early adopter Vista Business Mini users.

in Mini-Note top 9: Annoyances on Liliputing
Nice summary, Brad. I got my top-of-the-line Mini last week and just started using it Friday (busy week). This is the first machine I used with Vista (after reading reports of how it impacts battery life, I never installed the free "upgrade" on my Thinkpad X60t). And I am honestly shocked that HP thought this was a usable configuration. So right now True Image is creating a backup, should I ever want to go back to Vista. And then it's time for an upgrade to XP Professional.

The three pronged plug bugs me, too. A lot of my international adaptors are only two-pronged; time to go shopping for three-pronged ones, I guess. It also was nice to be able to use the same cable for a variety of chargers (e.g., Sony ebook reader) and save some space in that crammed gadget bag.

The keyboard/touch pad isn't really ideal for using the Mini in bed. I guess I should have thought about that earlier :)

Not sure what kind of slip case solution the 3rd party manufacturers will come up with for the extended battery configuration. Hmm.

I love high-res screens and have a 1400*1050 screen on my Thinkpad, but with the Mini I had to increase the font size.

No restore disks. Not good. No software to create them. Really bad.

in TiVo Sells Ads After Recordings on Zatz Not Funny!
Dave, what makes you think that the TiVo guys don't take a cue from the DVD guys, who have apparently discovered that they can get away with sticking mandatory FBI warnings and movie previews (=ads) in front of the actual movie.

There clearly seems to be a progression to push more and more advertising on paying TiVo customers. And since I don't think the post-show commercials are going to work, just like the on-demand ads, it seems forseeable that a more and more desparate (for money) TiVo will escalate this further...

in TiVo Sells Ads After Recordings on Zatz Not Funny!
And how long will it take until we read that TiVo will start inserting ads *before* a recording plays? (without the ability to skip over, for good measure).

I mean, really, who's going to watch adds *after* the show? Most people presumably don't even watch the credits.
