in Motorcycle Myths on Northwest Cycle Report
Ridden with both stock stealth pipes and V&H LS. Drivers hear the V&H first then start looking for the bike. Seen it happen many times on 520. When I had on Yamaha's stock stealth pipes drivers don't look and don't see until it is too late. The author's assertation that the sound id directed behind you is correct. Until that sound encounters another object such as the road or another vehicle where the sound reflects off that object. Unless of course that object has sound dampening material installed on its outer surface.

Loud pipes are no substitute for solid riding skills but they do help. There are new aftermarket pipes availiable, i.e. Hushers and Peacemakers, that have an electric diverter that allows the bike to run in either baffled (quiet) or unbaffled (loud) modes. These may be a happy middle ground to keep peace with the neighbors & LEO.

in GPS = Global Pantywaist System? on Northwest Cycle News
I'd disagree with the heated appendages. It is great to have fingers and hands working even when there is ice build up on the rest of the leather. That is what they make electrics for anyway.

GPS is one more distraction. Nice to have one when riding to a destination or leading a pack. Still not a vital component to riding though. If you are not getting lost chances are you are not riding enough.

in Happy Ride to Work Day on Northwest Cycle Report
Yep I rode. Tried to put together an event at work over the past week. 5 bikes showed up. Several hundred riders were notified.

Makes it real hard to get corporate to kick in coin for next year's event.

Lets see....
This is more of the same noise we hear every year. Every year nothing happens. That study is so skewed it can not even be considered reliable.

Mandatory m/c insurance never made it to commitee but the State got a new offical amphibian. Would there be as many bikes on the road if motorcycle insurance was required in this state?

Mandatory m/c endorsement never got proposed - The State got an offical vegetable. A m/c endorsement is not required to buy or register a motorcycle here.

The vehicle made an illegal u-turn in front of the motorcycle. But it is the motorcyclists fault because he did not have an endorsement. How does having an endorsement prevent another motorists from making an illegal u-turn in front of us? I have an endorsment and cagers are still trying to kill me everyday. It is part of the risk assumed when a rider saddles up.

Olympia should continue to do exactly what it is doing now - nothing. Leave the motorcyclists alone. Cagers cause enough problems without Olympia getting involved.

That new booster seat law is paying off big for me. My youngest daughter rides with me more now. Booster seat in the car or no booster seat on Dad's bike. Hmmmmmmmmm........

I do stop to help when I can and it appears safe. I'll help but you need to help yourself.

It is difficult to distingush between a rider in need of assistance and a rider that is simply stopping for a butt break or to phone a friend.

It is even more difficult to ascertain the need for assistance at 60+mph across 4 lanes of cages all gunning to kill me.

Do yourself and those that are "here if you need us" by making it easy to figure out that you need help. Helmet behind the rear wheel is one such signal. Over the head waving is another.

With less than a few seconds to identify and determine need for help, sitting on the ground counting spokes would appear to be a rider taking a break.

Now I don't mind helping others. What ever happened to self-reliance though?
