On Death and Dying:

interesting... i was just thinking the other day. a really cool book would be the thoughts and feelings of different people as they are dying. morbid, maybe... definitely interesting... for indeed death would be the greatest adventure. and yet... as you said of heaven, we have no idea. not just of what comes after death, but what it is to die anyway. so such a book would have to be speculation... good guesses, frightful fears, and maybe a few hopeless hopes.

maybe i should write that book.

but maybe that book should never be written.

It is sad that a state with the FIFTH largest economy in the nation cannot come up with $110 million for a transit system that benefits the most populous region of the state. Let's not forget where most of the economic activity rests in this state, hence where most of the tax dollars come from.

I'm sick of everyone always saying "Chicago gets everything - education money will just go to Chicago" - blah, blah, blah. It's where most of the people are. A quarter of all the people in the state live in the City of Chicago - and that does not even count the rest of Cook County or the suburbs.

The state has NEVER funded mass transit. Look at Europe and Asia; those places have great transit systems because they are funded by the government.

The comment about "glitzy renovationsâ€ - come on, I don't know if you have been on the CTA lately, but glitzy it is not.

I do agree, management at CTA is a complete mess, but Huberman seems to actually be doing something about that. But honestly, fares at $3.25, why would anyone bother to take the CTA when you could park downtown for roughly the same price. This just leads to more congestion and pollution - both reasons the CTA is good for the state.

Also, don't forget, how many tourists use the CTA daily!

Before last summer (when business began being ticketed) I could bring my dog to any outdoor cafe...in fact, I still can (as long as the city doesn't find out). It should be up to the restaurant owners. The owners of my local restaurants were upset when the city told them dogs were not allowed.

Plus when you think about it, people with dogs will most likely only visit their local restaurants with their dogs. They are not going to bring their dogs all across town. This means more people will spend money in their own neighborhood.

I'm guessing that people who bring their dogs to dinner, generally have well groomed dogs. I wonder how many people don't wash their hands after the restroom, which spreads much more disease than fido.

Illinois is a grant making state - meaning the state gives funding to human service organizations to provide public services. Those organizations should get state money - they do the job the state refuses to do and most of the time without any yearly increases.

Just look at how many state employees Rod terminated during his first term. Whose going to help the mentally ill, disabled, etc?

Actually Blago has been terrible on pensions. The pension liability has risen $7.1 billion since 2004, that's even includign the $7.0 billion in POB's (some of the POB's were used to fund general ops that year because of revenue shortfalls).

Remember the "pension holiday" we have to pay that back at 8.5%

Read the COGFA 90% pension funding report. The only year since he has been in office that he has made the 1995 contribution requirement was 2004 - and that was through bonding, not using state revenues.

It's not that member initiatives aren't necessary. Of course I think they should get funding for fire equipment, libraries and parks. It's the fact that there is NO debate on a $60 billion budget and if a member votes no they get nothing for their district.

How exactly is Madigan looking out for the people of Illinois if his spokesperson comes out and says - if they vote no their people get nothing??

Last time I checked one person shouldn't be in that much control of 12 million.

Saw that press conference. Typical, Blago saying he is removing "pork" and "special interest" and giving half a million more people health care - like he's some kind of saint.

In the mean time I hope it gets report just what type of "pork" he's cutting. Libraries, police, fire.

Just because he didn't get his way he whines and takes some kind of power. I mean who is this guy. I wish more people paid attention and realized what is going on in Springfield.

Actually many schools were receiving small grants - in the $30,000 range- in the member's "pork." No $650,000 isn't going to fund an entire school, but $30,000 means a lot to a school. In my own district, most of the money was going to schools and any that wasn't went to local parks and libraries.

Issue with Ginger's Statement:
Either way you look at it, the Governor vetoed $50 million from long term care and $40 million from ambulatory care.

If he would not have vetoed that funding the additional $90 million would be there as set by the GA.

It doesn't matter if the FY 08 appropriation remains level to FY 07 - the FY 07 appropriation was increased in the GA budget for those two line items and then VETOED by the Governor.

Why is health care the only issue the Gov's office is responding to? Why isn't he saying anything about all the human service programs he cut?

Do you honestly think CeaseFire managers make six figures. Common now. Let's paint this picture: housing in Chicago is expensive, so if your lower or middle income then you really can't afford to live in a nice neighborhood or send your kid to a nice school (let alone a private school and because our tax system is regressive, more of a percentage of your pay goes to taxes than a more wealthy person). So you live in a neighborhood where gang members "rule", no matter how many police patrol the streets. The only thing your kid sees are gangs and violence so that's who they end up turning to.

Right now all big urban cities are faced with drugs, gangs and more violence than ever before and it's not because everyone just let's it go, it's because kids grow up in this environment and that's all they know. Of course there are community members that try to change it, but we are talking about gun violence and drugs, gangs are not going to listen to a few community members and no law (thanks to the NRA) is going to prevent it.

That is why a group like CeaseFire is so necessary. Read their annual reports. They actually have reduced crime, not only in Chicago neighborhoods, but around the state.

"CeaseFire as welfare for gangs" sounds absolutely uninformed and ridiculous. How about tax expenditures as welfare for corporations or the war as welfare for contractors or Medicare as welfare for seniors.

Rich, this is a fun read, but I think you are over-generalize the legislative leaders. Your account is true for Madigan and I bet Cullerton as well. But you cannot say the same for Cross and Radogno. I cannot understand why Cross' caucus continues to follow him into the abyss. In 2008 the state democrats were tearing themselves apart, yet Cross managed to lose seats. His top Deputy, Brent Hassert, faced a complete unknown (McAsey) and should have had Cross' "protection" but if you look at the reports, it is as if they just let Hassert lose. It was a landslide. If you're in his caucus how can you even pretend Cross will help you after he left Hassert hanging in the wind?
