On the flip side - I've seen people with PhD's and Harvard MBA's run companies into the ground.
My main avenue into various organizations is as a consultant. They find out that I lack a degree when I am offered a permanent position. And by that time it no longer matters. It only matters to the HR department who is filtering out resumes.

I never understood this statement nor seen a good reason why having really really big pipes are a measurement of advancement. When I am in other countries that have higher bandwidth I am not seeing better applications. Matter of fact I am downright disappointed. When I actually see 20gbps bandwidth being utilized for something other then leeching porn I may start caring more.

Aside from streaming audio and video, what really cannot be done on a fast DSL or cable connection? Those connections provide plenty of bandwidth for business applications.
Wes Felter
Indeed. People won't buy "ultrabroadband" to run today's apps faster; it will enable new apps. But that will only happen when there is a critical mass of users so that these new apps are worth developing.

'Serious' investors don't base stock buying decisions on what the children at Gizmodo prints on their website or what they hear in some coffee shop. Which is why I completely ignore Fred's stock opinions. Hopefully he puts more effort into his portfolio companies then he does his own personal portfolio.

Most people don't have time to do much quantitative analysis on individual stocks day in and day out. If you're not going to do so, mutual funds probably make the most sense for individual investors. But that's no fun and I appreciate the back of the envelope valuation to justify the position I have taken in both companies even if Fred's understandably sketched out about Apple management.

May I offer a suggestion? Have them update the website to actually reflect what boxee does. I watched the video (which doesn't appear correctly using firefox on a mac btw) and I still don't understand where they are going with it nor why I should abandon the other dozen media distribution services I already have in my home.

Blackberry is great for e-mail and thats it. So if you define "hard core business user" in that context sure. Windows Mobile is the best business OS as it has the applications for it. But in my few minutes of playing around with Android I can away with a feeling of "meh". Its not a game changer. And being "open" (whatever that means) hasn't worked for Linux desktop and its not going to work for Mobile market. So I am in a wait and see attitude on how google improves this and how it sells (I really don't see a lot of apps being developed for it). But since Google is just an advertising company I am not holding my breath.
(in front of me I have a blackberry, three iPhones, and a Blackjack running Windows Mobile 5 - not one customer of mine has expressed interest in Android)

I was going to comment on the "hard core business user" thing, too... except I'm on a PalmOS Treo, and I'm often annoyed because neither of my two Blackberry-toting partners can actually edit Office documents and view PDFs. And their battery life sucks by comparison.
I do expect a huge number of apps to be developed for Android, and I think Google's biggest mistake was going with T-Mobile. I know quite a few people who want an Android phone but won't touch this one because of the carrier dependency (myself included). Heck, I'd probably spend what little spare time I have looking into writing an Exchange client if only the phone wasn't stuck on T-Mobile. But instead I'm stuck waiting to see if it gets picked up by a real carrier with decent coverage.
Google's search business wasn't a game-changer either. They started when Alta-Vista was the undisputed king. I think their tactic is the same: to simply do the smartphone thing better, perhaps even just incrementally better, and let the snowball-accumulation effect work its magic.

Umm, I have SEVERAL useful third-party applications installed on my BlackBerry Curve. And I'm sorry, just about every Windows Mobile device I've touched or seen needs to be rebooted on a CONSTANT basis. Having to constantly reboot your phone does not make it the best business OS (in fact just the opposite in my opinion). Also, keep in mind that RIM outsells WM devices something like 5 to 1 easily (and I'm probably undershooting). Executives like their phones to work, not be constantly rebooted. If you want to argue what "hardcore business users" are using, look at the numbers, you'll find it ain't the iPhone or WM.
Also, what do you mean "open" hasn't worked for Linux? There are more people using Linux today than ever before. Linux has helped Amazon and Google become power houses in today's internet market. So I'm not sure what your definition of "working" is, but it seems it is largely different than mine.

Tim,
Get of your high horse - the number of restaurants the man has established has nothing to do with the issue. He is asking paying customers to pay, in advance, for a meal they know nothing about. This is a big step.
I think you'll agree it is a little arrogant.

As for voice - I feel that people are making too much over it. On flights you already deal with a 100 distractions on the plane. Thats why we have headsets. And as someone who takes the bus everyday people on phones aren't that big of an issue - its actually pretty rare. I would rather just have the market figure it out.

Tim... yelling and even threatening each other was part of politics forever... citizens should have a little bit of the "thick skin" required for every politician. There is no way around it. It is a bit like the yelling that is normal for sports. People in southern cultures (like the inventors of politics in Greece and Rome) are OK with some yelling. It doesn't stop them from being friends after the "session"... :)

I disagree with you on the validity but we agree on "that's life". But I also disagree with the original commentor who chose to stop reading your blog because you threw up an opinion on something that he disagrees with. People read blogs for a variety of reasons. I've worked for many startups backed by VCs and I am interesting in the process and opinions that go on in that world. But I can care less about your political leanings which is why I choose to skip it and have lunch.

in Comment Of The Day: Community Organization Is A Conservative Notion on A VC
I didn't read the original comment but he does bring up a valid point. This election brings out passionate opinions about the issues at hand. The unfortunate side effect of that is you realize some people that you've come to respect have rather naive or idiotic opinions about the issues outside their normal comfort zones or areas of expertise. I've gotten to a point where I run across a political thread in a blog - I just skip it and move on with life. Which is what I did on Fred's "Community Organization ..." entry. If I want political opinions I go to a political site.

Nothing annoys me more than someone saying something sucks and doesn't follow it up with a reason. I don't know how android will fair as I haven't seen anything real concrete on it. However google is taking pages out of the Microsoft skewl of product releases - announce something, over promise, and delay the living hell out of it. The next logical step is to under deliver. Based on that - I have no real hopes that android is the new jesus phone. Matter of fact - I think it will be a disaster based on how the launch is being handled.

You are a VC - i expect that you would pimp your companies. Otherwise what type of VC would you be? I would expect any VC backed company I work for to be championed by those that provide the funding (at least publicly).
As a security guy - this scares me to know end. I chose to not use Covestor because of what I saw as inadequate controls. What you see "getting stiched" together - I see as a disaster waiting to happen. And end user control is an illusion. You have no control over your data once you allow other systems and companies have access to it.
I love how all these web services are getting stitched together by us (the users). It's the foundation of the web we are building, an open and connected web controlled by the end users.

in Honesty Is The Best Policy on A VCThe stock is weak because the market thinks Steve is sick.
I find no basis in this comment. AAPL stock goes through periods of overhype and then falls back to reality because its a very secretive company and is heavily monitored. The current weakness has nothing to do with Job's health.

That's debateable. When analysts all over the street are talking about it in their research and calls with customers, its impacting the stock. How much is another story entirely. We'll only know if Jobs comes out and says something definitive and then the stock will tell you
