in This could actually work: MySpace Music on Mathew's comments
Kinda weird that had you agree to an embargo to a service not available in Canada. Also, I thought you normally don't agree to them?

mathewi I only agreed to the embargo because someone else at the Globe had already agreed and I didn't want to wreck it for them. As it turns out, a UK publication broke the embargo.

Is the original team still at Planet Eye? When they first launched , I thought it was a bunch of U of T students.

in Announcing Startup Nation - Canada’s Conference for Startups - November 13-14 on StartupNorth
Awesome, very much interested in this event. How do you envision Day 1 being presented - will attendees have to choose between sessions?

For the guys who want to attend and can't afford it right now, pick up a quick gig on craigslist and put the money towards the conference.

Jevon's picture
Jevon You will have to choose a bit, yes., but there will be two "tracks", Track 1 is focused on people who have never had a startup before and want to learn the ropes,.

Track 2 is focused on people with startups, but who want to take it to the next level.

mathewi I admit it probably doesn't interest that many people, but it
interests me -- and it's my blog, which means (I'm pretty sure) that I
get to write about whatever I want. By definition, some things are
only going to appeal to a small number of people -- and some
(possibly) might appeal to none at all. Plus, it was late at night :-)

I don't agree with his tactics & I think he comes off as an idiot but there has to be more than one path to success for startups. How many businesses are actually sold (what most startups want these days) through good press/coverage from techcrunch? If positive coverage from techcrunch was the bellwether for getting sold then Riya would be google image search right now. Maybe his family connections trumps facebook groups & democamps with Sun Media ending up buying them...their design is shitty enough to be a Sun property :)

Dear Voice of Reason - If you followed the comments you will see that I apologized. The reason I originally called it out was my concern this blog was moving towards the techcrunch style -- which I find is more about building their page views than sharing the spotlight on startups. I visit this blog a couple times a day hoping to see updates and - since it's launch - I've been visiting the index often too. For the record, I'm very appreciative and have told a few people to check this blog out. I think it's one of the better blogs out there and I'm also fine with the guys trying to make some $$ of this site...but when I couldn't link to ( or find the link to) the site it made my hackles rise :).

Apologies if it was there...it's just that tactic employed by techcrunch rubs me the wrong way.

sounds like a good service but where's the direct link to their website? Seems like your pulling an arrington by directing people to the index.

I find it funny that most people/critics were outraged by the 60 million dollar Business Week cover, now they're gloating because the sale may be "only" 200 million....

in Finally, Wireless Competition Explodes in Canada on StartupNorth
Bruce,

I made that statement and the few stories I heard on the news pretty much said the same thing. Videotron is only concerned with the Quebec market and maybe Ontario. Previous entrants such as Microcell and another startegy was to run at a lose until they were acquired. Are you telling me this play will not happen again? Short term gain is not what the wireless industry in Canada needs.

Thomas, sounds like you are excited about the possibility of candy bar prices coming down too? :)

Like the price fixing allegations/investigation in the confectionary industry, this decision will have little affect on the wireless prices unless we get some risk takers. I feel it is more centered on public perception than anything else. Canadians paying through the nose for outdated wireless technology is ridiculous! I say provide me choice...I want my clarkbar,er, I mean an i-phone!
