in This could actually work: MySpace Music on Mathew's comments
Kinda weird that had you agree to an embargo to a service not available in Canada. Also, I thought you normally don't agree to them?

I only agreed to the embargo because someone else at the Globe had already agreed and I didn't want to wreck it for them. As it turns out, a UK publication broke the embargo.

Is the original team still at Planet Eye? When they first launched , I thought it was a bunch of U of T students.

in Announcing Startup Nation - Canada’s Conference for Startups - November 13-14 on StartupNorth
Awesome, very much interested in this event. How do you envision Day 1 being presented - will attendees have to choose between sessions?
For the guys who want to attend and can't afford it right now, pick up a quick gig on craigslist and put the money towards the conference.

You will have to choose a bit, yes., but there will be two "tracks", Track 1 is focused on people who have never had a startup before and want to learn the ropes,.
Track 2 is focused on people with startups, but who want to take it to the next level.

This is another in a series of shit articles. Being August, I guess there isn't much for you to write about....wake us up in September when there is something worth coming to the site for.

Hi Kristen,
hot or not was bought by a company called avid life media for (rumoured $20 mill) so you're probably right in them trying to leverage that user base and base code for other verticals...they have to recoup that money somehow!

I guess they didn't implement the number 1 user generated feature/complaint about news sites ---being able to read an article without having to register! The newspapers tried that shit years ago and everyone constantly complained - I guess the median in socialmedian means registration or walled garden.
thanks but no thanks!

I admit it probably doesn't interest that many people, but it
interests me -- and it's my blog, which means (I'm pretty sure) that I
get to write about whatever I want. By definition, some things are
only going to appeal to a small number of people -- and some
(possibly) might appeal to none at all. Plus, it was late at night :-)

I'm not so sure why you would give glowing remarks to a frame-based app....I can't bookmark an article I see through the service to my browser and I'm sure there are other frame based usability issues with the service. I'm all for simplifying a web experience but I'm not sold on this service.

Right, but it's not really a bookmarking service, it's all about browsing. That's it. That's the extent of it. I really did enjoy using it. It could use some more attention on the details, but the basics are quite good.

Checked out the site and it's weak. Flash based interface, very few news items, poor layout...makes this DOA. I'm all for a filter for all the noise but this site doesn't do it.

@John, hmmmm I just viewed the source code and there definitely isn't any flash, it's a bunch of tables and image links. You sound like you really know what you are talking about.
Lowell Goss
The LOUD3R sites do not use flash at all. Were you looking at the widget page?
If you get a chance please click through to one of the network sites from the LOUD3R homepage.

I don't agree with his tactics & I think he comes off as an idiot but there has to be more than one path to success for startups. How many businesses are actually sold (what most startups want these days) through good press/coverage from techcrunch? If positive coverage from techcrunch was the bellwether for getting sold then Riya would be google image search right now. Maybe his family connections trumps facebook groups & democamps with Sun Media ending up buying them...their design is shitty enough to be a Sun property :)

I wish them luck but when I tried to launch a similar service, we found that people were less willing to share deals. They just wanted a service to serve deals up. Unless there is some monetary reward, most people won't participate.

in Refresh Analytics - Analytics and Demographics for Facebook developers on StartupNorth
Dear Voice of Reason - If you followed the comments you will see that I apologized. The reason I originally called it out was my concern this blog was moving towards the techcrunch style -- which I find is more about building their page views than sharing the spotlight on startups. I visit this blog a couple times a day hoping to see updates and - since it's launch - I've been visiting the index often too. For the record, I'm very appreciative and have told a few people to check this blog out. I think it's one of the better blogs out there and I'm also fine with the guys trying to make some $$ of this site...but when I couldn't link to ( or find the link to) the site it made my hackles rise :).

sounds like a good service but where's the direct link to their website? Seems like your pulling an arrington by directing people to the index.
