I'm figuring the non DVR owners win in the talk radio category. Oh wait, I bet TV watching is such a large chunk of time that it pulls the other percentages down. I bet OS X has a utility like rpm. It's probably better and easier to use, but rpm is the tool that Red Hat (rpm stands for Red Hat Package Manager I believe) and Fedora uses and I like it.

Just to get you started try:

$ rpm -qi squid

which should tell you a bunch about what you just installed. Just for reference, I bought a condo 2 1/2 years ago--not a great deal, definitely after prices started skyrocketing, but a little cheaper area then Ventura--and last week I finally saw an ad in the paper of a unit just like mine for rent at a price that would cover the mortgage, taxes, and HOA with a little left over. Now I'm looking for a fixer-upper with a yard or thinking of trying to get some land to build on in a cheaper area of town.

Re: Financial plan at Scattered

Dan "greedy real estate peep" Cameron

Re: Financial plan at Scattered

I'm just playing. I've asked a few real estate agents both in California and Arizona and they always say they are hard to come by. I don't know if they get a commission from selling a foreclosure. Maybe they don't get much or it's too much work for them, or maybe they don't like to share their inside information, or maybe their telling the truth and foreclosures are just really hard to come by. Bottom line, I don't' know and have never done it.

Re: Financial plan at Scattered

Dan, I'm not trying to run you out of Ventura or anything but from my vast experience of moving a couple of times you'll find good friends and a good church anywhere you go.

Re: Google set to release Video Blog service?

nope.

Re: Financial plan at Scattered

what are feelings?

Re: MPEG-2 Conversion

maybe try ffmpeg

Re: MPEG-2 Conversion

blasphemy! just kidding but the developers are probably all volunteers so that's why it doesn't have a cool gui. Ha ha, talk about left wing hell! Quick poll, Who owns an SUV here? Who carpools? why or why not?

I don't own an SUV. I also only recently got a second car since two kids in car seats was making the two-door civic a tight fit. I carpool, actual I 14 passenger vanpool, 75% of the days I go to work even though my commute isn't that bad. Why? Not owning an SUV is mainly for economic reasons and I never have really wanted one anyways. I vanpool because it's nice and relaxing, makes me get up and get to work, and is cheap as heck. I'm not trying to make myself look good I just hate the do as I say not as I do attitude.

Dave has at least brought up specific examples of why/when higher taxes and big public works programs haven't faired very well, but all I hear from Jared, Dan and Billy is wild claims with little or no basis. I'm not sure but I think public transportation works pretty good in Tokyo for instance and I think LA needs a monorail. With vouchers you take the money out of the hands of bureaucrats and give it to the parents who really care and have a clear, vested interest in their child's education. With the vouchers parents are free to choose which school is best for their child. It may be a a public school, a private religious school, or any other accredited alternative school. Each school is forced to compete for the students and when schools can't attract students they shut down and when parents are dissatisfied with the education their children are getting they have other options. For families without a lot of extra cash it gives them an opportunity to shop around where before only wealthier families could.

Re: Stupid in America

I'm not familiar with Stossel but I wouldn't call the video journalism. I personally think the books written by Hawkins and Harris are responsible for most of the interest, and that's why the magazines and newspapers are covering them and then stuff gets posted on digg and YouTube. So what's the affect? Judging from what I've read on newsvine, If the only part of the conversation people are getting is the part that ends up on Web 2.0 then they there selling themselves short. I'm wondering if it has increased book sells. Actually, know that I think about it, my recent interest in this sort of thing kind of started with an add for _The_God_That_Wasn't_There_ (not a good film by the way) on MetaFilter but I can also trace it back to some other non-web related things I was introduced to. I guess I'm just thinking that if all the information you are taking in is the sort of thing that takes up most the space on the web you are going to be a pretty bad (or at least stupid) atheist, Christian, or whatever. If you want iTunes, video games, Joost, software you get with a textbook, all the fancy devices, and so on to all *just work*, it's a better choice. But I don't think that really matters. The fact is that each operating systems is different enough from the next that there's a ton of factors to weigh when choosing one.

Paying extra for getting music sans DRM involves a super basic trade off analysis.

Re: I need to ……

You need to get slapped. Changing your mind isn't a flip-flop. For instance, if you consider McCain's position on the Bush tax cuts you will find that he never had a philosophical objection to cutting taxes, and now that he has seen the positive effect that they had it is natural for him to modify his position.

Flip-flopping should be reserved for a special kind of verbal gymnastics. Unwilling to commit to a side through vagaries or what not. Significantly changing presentation depending on the audience. Unwillingness to make a strong defence of a serious policy. These are things that show character flaws or sloppy thinking that should lower confidence in a candidate.

Re: Dear Friends, Why I support Obama

It's not really fair to think only of the deficit when discussing tax cuts since the federal deficit is not only a function of income but also of spending. While it is point of debate in this particular instance whether the lower taxes actually increased federal revenue (check out the corporate tax revenue after 2003 though), it most certainly does happen when the tax rates are much too high. Also, it is pretty clear I think that the economy was strengthened in many ways from those tax cuts. Increasing employment levels at the end of 2003 up until just recently are often cited in support of this.

My point though was that McCain believes that thy have been positive, which would naturally cause him to reassess his position making the charge of flip-flop unfair.

Re: Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive, And Mean.” | The LA Progressive

Dan, you are better than this thinly source demagoguery.

Re: Buy Something Christmas

I find putting words in the mouth of sad Jesuse offensive.
