Sounds like my vacations.

My kids are home this week, too. That's vacation for *them* not me or my wife :)

Okay, keep in mind this is coming from a guy who has a cartoon of himself in his header, but like William, I liked the "laughing Doug." But unlike William, I want my technology and marketing from a slacker in a sweater :)

It's a great picture though, and the overall look is awesome - crisp, clean, but bold.

I like it.

Douglas Karr I'm laughing in this picture! Laughing because I'm curious how much touch up it's going to take to make me look presentable.

Douglas Karr Hehe. In case anyone is wondering about Stumpy... it's a reference to zefrank's recent bedtime story.

Zefrank is another one of my guilty pleasures.

in WordPress Plugin: PostPost (Updated) on The Marketing Technology Blog
Cool. Somebody's had a fun and productive weekend ;)
Douglas Karr That it was! It was one of my goals for 2007 to write my own plugin from scratch. I've modified many other people's plugins but this is the first that I took on. It's now being used to serve my Google Ads under each post as well as my RSS Feed ads.

Fun stuff... and 2 goals down! (One of my others was to get into the Top 5,000 at Technorati... I hit that already but it was with the assistance of many "Z-List" posts, so I'll wait for the stats to iron themselves out before I celebrate).

Cheers!
Doug

Doug - This is awesome. I've been putting off writing my own in hopes of someone else doing it. I'm not running ads, but am planning on having some feed only stuff coming up. This will be perfect. Thanks!

Douglas Karr Thanks Tony! I'm going to upgrade it in the next couple weeks with an Admin interface. I'm new at writing Plugins so it's slow going.
Douglas Karr Tony,

Just an FYI, I totally rewrote the plugin and have posted it again. The original was fine, but the upgrade has a full admin interface on it! I've reposted this post as well.

in Two Must-See Blogs! on The Marketing Technology Blog
Hey Doug - Wow, thanks so much for the great write-up - and being paired with Creating Passionate Users (one of my favorites) is very cool.

I strongly believe that having fun is a key part of doing work you love and being successful. Cartooning has been something I've done since I was 2. So I knew from the beginning that it would be a part of my blog.

Besides, most entrepreneur and motivational stuff is so dry and boring. Just think how much more fun the tax code or business lectures would be if they had cartoons ;)

Douglas Karr You're so welcome, Tony. I really have not seen two blogs that do it better than yours and Creating Passionate Users.

PS: I'm not sure cartoons would help the tax code. :)

in The Business of Boobs on The Marketing Technology Blog
From the title, I thought this was going to be a post about Congress :)

I agree that boobs sell, but I wouldn’t want to mess around with my domains. I've been with DirectNIC for years, and they've always been great. They even worked through Katrina (they're based in N.O.), and worked their butts off to keep everything running.

Boobs, or no boobs, I'm sticking with them.

Looks great Glen. I love how clean it is and I agree with Tom that you integrated your color scheme nicely.

I might suggest that you move your subscription stuff to the second column, only because when viewed at a lower resolution (or with the sidebar open in FF in my case) you lose the 3rd column. Just an idea.

It looks very cool.

Looks nice, Ben. I like the clean look. I agree with Char about the pictures. Also, though I run a higher res, I tend to keep my sidebar open in FF making the viewing area smaller, so I get the vertical scroller too. That loses your 3rd column, so you might want to move your subscription stuff to the second column, and keep "less critical" stuff in the 3rd.

Just my $0.02... anyway :)

in Fire Your Crappy Customers - The Homestead Hubbub on Instigator Blog
Hey Ben - I appreciate all the link love - even though it seems to involve nuts a lot lately :)

As a self-employed person, knowing when and how to fire bad customers is important. It can affect so many areas of your business, that how you handle it can really impact you and your work.

in Comments Policy How To on Andy Beard - Internet Business Systems Discussion
I've had a comments policy from day one, and it's worked well (knock on wood). I never even thought about the "nofollow" in comments until you mentioned it. I agree, Spam Karma has caught most of the spam, and I rarely (if ever) get human entered link spam.

I'm going to consider turning off the nofollow, too.

in Marketing Should Underpromise and Overdeliver on Duct Tape Marketing
This is an excellent point. I've referred to it as the "Scotty Approach." On the old Star Trek series, Scotty always used to be able make things happen, even after he said they were impossible. As a master of underpromising, he always ended up a hero.

in Jumbled To-Do Lists: Productivity’s Dirty Little Secret? on LifeDev
I did the same thing. I found that I was actually more productive when I used one list. I then began creating a daily ask flow (I wrote about it and posted a template at lifehack.org). It has greatly simplified my process and allowed me to work more efficiently on all the various projects I have going on.

in What a Poop-Covered Toddler Can Teach You About Business on Instigator Blog
Great post, Ben. With 3 girls, the youngest not yet 2, I know where you're coming from.

We were fortunate that just putting PJ bottoms or bloomers on with their nightshirts worked as a deterrent. We have friends that use full footie PJ's because they're harder to get off during the night.

We even resorted to using Little Swimmers instead of regular diapers for a short time. No tape, and harder for them to get off.

Your analogies are spot on. "No one is sick. No one died." That's a great way to look at things, both in business and in life.

in When Do You Do Your Best Thinking? on Instigator Blog
I'm with Nneka and Denise. I get almost all of my ideas for articles, posts, and cartoons while out walking the dog. Sometimes it's from something I see (like my post for today on rainbows and weekends) or other times it's from the Zen-like quality of being out in nature and moving. I call it meditative action – mind at peace, body in motion.

And especially when it's cool. I could generate tons of material on long walks during the fall.
