New and improved language filters are up and running now. Support for unicode is done; which means Chinese/Russian/etc filters are working.

Thanks for the write up. Language detection is a tricky thing. I'll have a UI for this sometime today.

in Add RSSmeme To Your FeedBurner FeedFlare on SheGeeks
Thanks for writing about this! Just so everyone knows; these two features have very different use cases. I'm of course going to recommend that everyone uses both :)

The blog widget lets you reach out to readers who don't subscribe to your RSS feed. They can then click a link to share right from your blog without ever subscribing feed.

The FeedFlare is a little different. All it really does is let your readers know how many times a story has been shared and lets them click on the link to view it in RSSmeme (to see comments/tags/sharers/etc...)

in Mashable Breathes New Life Into ReadBurner on SheGeeks
I'm glad that ReadBurner is back. It means I have to innovate again :). So yes, I just launched the widget. Something that I had been meaning to do but never got around to finishing. It only took me an hour or so and the motivation definitely came from ReadBurner's news.

Competition is good!

in When Real Life Gets In The Way on SheGeeks
It is certainly sad that ReadBurner had to close down. Competition is always a good thing and ReadBurner kept me on my toes. Having said that I do offer a number of things that ReadBurner didn't (some AJAX, comments, search, tags) and am missing things.

Now that ReadBurner is gone I feel like I owe it to the community to add in the features that ReadBurner had that RSSmeme didn't, starting with language filters.

No problem, if you live in a feed reader you'll love RSSmeme. You can have it generate feeds for custom searches/tags/authors/sources. I'm working on an API for it too.

in Buy a Domain for Email or at Least a Gmail Account on Chris Brogan
I agree 100%. It took me a while but I finally got most of my family to switch from using their ISP email to Gmail. The trigger that finally caused it was this: my mother moved in with my grandparents so she signed them up with cable internet. My grandparents were using their dial-up ISP email address and I had to explain that they couldn't use that anymore.

So I set them up with outlook looking exactly the same but now with a Gmail account. Soon my grandparents discovered they could check their email at mail.google.com and fell in love with the interface. I had to teach my grandpa how to use outlook and it took a while; but he picked up the Gmail web interface without any help. Now they even use Gmail chat!

Then my mother saw how much better it was and realized that if we stopped using our ISP she'd be stuck in the same situation so she switched to Gmail. And now the world is a better place :)

I don't really recommend people use their own domain only because it's one more thing to worry about; Gmail just works.

Thanks for doing a story on RSSmeme! I don't plan (or intend) on being a successor to Techmeme...I just needed a name :P But yes I do like to emphasize the search and tags; because that is what sets RSSmeme apart from the rest of the aggregators out there.

Also RSSmeme does not have a submit page for new feeds; instead it searches for shared feeds on OTHER aggregators and adds them to its database. I've thought about adding a form but I like the fact that this way I get a consistent steady stream of new feeds.

I just went through a database reorganization which resulted in a much snappier and happier database so complex queries (like searching, similar users/stories, and filtering) are very quick now.

If you ever want to talk hit me up on Google Talk (benjamin DOT golub AT gmail DOT com) or twitter (bgolub).

Done; the next feeds that FeedDemon pulls in should say:

Shared by X people. Tagged taglink1 taglink2 taglink3

If you want anything else just let me know :)

StevenHodson API? or even XML URL :)

I was more than serious about being able to take services like FriendFeed and RSSMeme and put them into a desktop interface. For me that is were my big interest lies as a developer as not everyone wants to live in a browser but they should still be able to access their favorite information provider in anyway they want to.

That is one reason why I wrote TwitBox (and is going through a rewrite at this point).

And thanks for being willing to be as responsive as you are to your users :)

Ok, the RSS feed now has tag links next to the "Shared by X people" link. I also would like to mention that we have some AJAX on the site. You don't have to click to read a link, you can click the "read more" link and I load the entire details without making you click to a new page :)

Can you go into more detail about RSSmeme's tags? Are you saying that you'd like the RSS feed to have the tags in it (because I can have that done in seconds) or are you saying that you like the tags to be contained in the RSS feed entries tag attribute (because I already do that)?

Thanks for writing about RSSmeme!

StevenHodson If you can include the Tag Links as shown on the front page within the RSS feed that I pull into FeedDemon then Yes! (can I say that again YES). I might be out in the cold here but for me Tags are - or at least could be - one of the most powerful ideas to come out of this whole Web 2.0 thing (for the lack of better terminology). I also think is one RSSMeme best features.

If you have read anything I have posted in the past about Ideastreaming you'll understand why I think they are important.

You don't have to join them; some of them (mine) find you: http://www.rssmeme.com/ crawls the web looking for Google Reader link blogs. If you've joined one of them and are actively sharing then you'll eventually make it onto RSSmeme too.
