in The Rise of Microfame on Chris Brogan
Yes! This is quite simply one of the best posts I've read in awhile. Of course, I love pretty much everything you write, Chris! ;)
"But fame isn’t trust, and the real goal, in my estimation, would be to develop trust, build relationships, and earn the attention of people in our circles of interest. That’s what matters."
Amen. This is why people gravitate towards *you*, Chris. I agree 100% with what you say. It's one thing to have lots of people know you - to be "well-known." It's another to have lots of people love you, trust you, respect you, send business to you. And that doesn't just happen on its own. There's a process of what could be called "earn the right" by demonstrating. By showing that your words are in alignment with your actions. Showing that you care. Genuinely.
@Owen Marcus. I love this nugget: "Fame takes work to maintain. Trust builds on itself." Well said.
I think my new acronym for FAME is Feeling Abundant More Everyday. (Okay, not the best grammar!). But what microfame means to me is the ability to reach more people and have more opportunities come my way than I can possibly handle such that I get to refer those opportunities to other people. For sure, it takes more work. But it's rewarding and a reminder of how abundant the world is.
Cheers,
@marismith

in Social Media Hierarchy Revisted on Duct Tape Marketing
This is awesome, John!! I'm a big fan of Mazlow and sequential processes too. I always say the #1 reason peeps flounder in social networking is they don't have a strategy. It's not about going in and getting the max friends/followers/fans... if you don't have all the other pieces in place too.
Good stuff!

I'm glad you're giving Joel's case more exposure, Robert.
The continued deactivation of Facebook accounts for violating any number of *unpublished* limitations is getting a tad weary for us peeps who use Facebook daily for business purposes.
I spoke with Facebook's Director of Online Operations, Don Faul, at the recent Affiliate Summit West (coincidentally where Joel Comm was also a keynote speaker) - I got the same response as you, Robert - that Facebook are "looking into the deactivation of legit accounts." I asked Don specifically about a paid level of membership to allow for heavier users. Don seemed emphatic they'd never move to a paid subscription model. [Funny, as that would surely help with their revenue model. I would certainly pay a monthly/annual fee for removal of certain restrictions and improved features for business use.]
It used to be that Facebook would issue up to three warnings before deactivating, and the shutdown would only occur if the warnings weren't heeded. That makes more sense to me. Nonetheless, I wish Facebook would have a real person (as opposed to the bots) review theses cases. Essentially their algorithms are like a spam filter set too tight where bona fide emails land in the junk folder - Don confirmed this was the case and that if they were to loosen the filters more real spammers would prevail.
Hopefully Joel's situation will be the tipping point for revised policies in Facebook. Meantime, sure hope his account is back up and running fully intact asap!
Cheers,
@marismith
P.S. I blogged about possibly avoiding Facebook account deactivation here:

in What Facebook Fan Pages Taught Me About Relationships on Chris Brogan
@franswaa Great point - thanks for the ping.
How members choose to utilize Facebook is really a personal decision.
Many highly successful and visible business people prefer to keep their Facebook account for just close friends and family, while driving the "masses" to their Fan Pages. However, my opinion is that you're missing out on a huge opportunity to position yourself and your business by not building out your network of friends strategically up to the 5,000 mark.
The primary reasons to utilize your Profile for business are: (a) the News Feed feature - you can create consistent strategic visibility among hand-picked key contacts, and (b) more people than ever are using Facebook as a connection medium and actually check their profile and email - thus you can reach highly influential people you may never have been able to reach before.
SO - what to do about the real life close friends and family members? Here's my suggestion - set up a Secret Facebook Group and share photos, videos, content that you want to keep private. OR, tweak your privacy settings for certain photos/videos. OR, use another medium like an invite-only Ning group or Yahoo group for friends and family. Facebook Profiles are all-too-powerful to not use them for business purposes.
Hope this helps!

in What Facebook Fan Pages Taught Me About Relationships on Chris Brogan
Chris - I think whether friend, fan, supporter, follower, or subscriber, the bottom line is peeps want to hear what you have to SAY. All these social platforms allow us to have a bigger megaphone such that more people can hear our message... and more people can have a bigger sense of community because now I can connect with people who also love and adore you! lol!
I do feel likes of Facebook has completely changed the true meaning of "friend." A complete stranger - even a downright spammer - could be a Facebook "friend." Which is why I recommend being vigilant about doing Facebook "housekeeping" regularly. Anyone can add themselves as your fan, but you get to say who the friends are. With Facebook at 140 million users, hurtling towards 500 million by 2011, if we can *only* be friends with 5,000 I say pick those peeps wisely.

Way to go, Chris!! I'm proud of ya making this Facebook Fan Page for pretty much the same reasons I set mine up too. (SEO + unlimited fans are the two main reasons to have a FB Fan Page.)
I, too, feel just a tad funny when asking peeps to be my "fan." But, hey - if we get into politics we'd have "Supporters" instead of "Fans!!" hehe :-)
Thanks a mil for the props too. I heart you!
Cheers,

Wow, Chris - this is really laughable. Yep, I've had to click on the thumbs down several times on the Facebook ads. Many of them are downright awful. I must say, however, with the social ad component, I do tend to keep my eye out on what I can interact with... especially on the sponsored ads on the home page.

in How Often Do You Promote Others on Chris Brogan
NICE post, Chris!!
Twitter is one of my fave ways to promote others. I wrote a whole post on this at whyfacebook.com about how to increase interaction with your Facebook & Twitter network:
To tweet and retweet good posts and resources; to buoy my peeps up; to @ message those whose blogs I comment on & link to their blog; to fan their Facebook Page; to share on Facebook; and to blog about great peeps when I come across excellent customer service, for example.
For sure, there's much those of us with a tribe can do to help lift others up and help bring them more visibility, readers and clients.
Cheers,
Mari

Hi Chris!
I must say I aspire to your blogging talents! (I'm working on cloning myself so I have more time to manage my 3 blogs. ha!!)
Seriously, it was such a delight to get to meet you face-to-face at the BlogWorld Expo this past weekend, after being your online bud for over a year. I just love how social media allows us to create "virtual rapport" such that when we meet in person, we're like long lost pals!
And re blogs on fire, one of the many tips I learned from you a while back is to always end posts with question(s) to invite feedback. I admire how well you do this!
Cheers,
Mari

in 2008/09/05/new-facebook-is-coming/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
As a professional who uses Facebook solely for business purposes, I am a HUGE *raving* fan of the new Facebook design!
Yes, it took a little getting used to with the combo MiniFeed & Wall... and disappearing apps. (I can appreciate from a developers standpoint, the new app display is frustrating).
However, here's what I LOVE about the new design:
* the ubiquitous commenting feature and ability to comment on the fly (*even* on ads!!),
* the LIVE FEED (awesome feature for realtime action & connecting),
* the feed filters - including by Friend Lists (I recommend keeping lists of your top key contacts for a quick check in to their activities in your News Feed!!),
* the customizable less of/more of feed stories (much easier now to train FB exactly what you want in your Feed),
* the mini bio under your profile pic,
* ability to display 12 specific friends,
* easier Status Update (that only posts when you click the button, not like before),
* easy edit "pencil" for all sections of your profile,
* easy app editing.
Okay, did I mention I LOVE the new FB design? And I reckon any biz user who doesn't like the new design (yet!) hasn't quite grasped the full power of the platform. Hopefully these tidbits I've shared help!!
My $0.05!! ;)

Excellent list, John. I like and use most all of your Top 10 list. I'd also add these:
Posted Items, Notes, Events, Podclass, Twitter, TwitterSync, FriendFeed, MyBox, MyGoogleCalendar, MyBlogs, YouTube, StumbleUpon
I like Facebook Video for the reasons you state. And for more leveraged video content, I recommend uploading videos to YouTube and using the YouTube app.
Posted Items, Notes and Events are all FB default apps as I'm sure you know, and provide great opportunity for what I call "viral visibility!"
