We're all going to have to get a lot smarter in the way that we "engage" all sectors of the community - for while the adoption curves seem to be starting to level out, it just means that we are reaching saturation. But the truth is, it is only just starting to reach a level of maturity that is acceptable to business.

And while there are millions of blogs out there, most fold within the first few months. And there are many examples of poor social media strategy, non-existing integration within a broader marketing program and limited understanding of the impact of social media on business objectives. This is where the hard work now lies. It is time to work on the case studies and success stories.

We have got to stop talking amongst ourselves and start talking to the businesses and organisations who can tangibly benefit from the innovations that social media + networks offer. And that is where folks like you, Lee, will come in handy.

Re: Gavin Heaton is a social media charlatan (and I thoroughly approve)

I have heard of those as well, Connie! And while the agencies can sense the potential, the real value will be unleashed when consultants are able to provide some business modelling around Web 2.0.

Having said that, many organisations are trialling wikis and the like internally, but they would not necessarily classify these as social media. And many of the large tech companies already have active Australian virtual teams using social media (eg IBM, Mirosoft, Accenture etc). So far this is being used as a source of competitive advantage -- and kept behind the firewall or VPN. I am sure this will change when we can measure the value.

Re: Facebook groups: an untapped, under-resourced tool

I agree ... the Groups add a whole new dimension to Facebook. David Armano has invested a significant amount of time and effort in building a substantial community around his website ... he has created strong personal connections with a number of people - and strong arm's length connections with many, many others. For those who operate within this network, trust is given and revoked based on connection and belief. It relies on those who we know and on those who know others. It is how movements happen.

BusinessWeek would have been involved because David also writes for them. He knows some of their senior writers.

I have met David a couple of times. We have shared emails about our lives, careers and the sometimes mundane nature of social media. We have become friends despite huge geographical distances and the tyranny of timezones. If he says a friend of his needs help -- that's good enough for me. And that's the way it should be.

Re: Are universities failing to engage students?

No easy answers on this one ;)

Zac was called out nicely on his attitude and rounded it out in the comments as the discussion grew. Sure classes can be boring - but they can also be fascinating - with the right attitude. The challenge is not in learning what is spoon fed, but choosing your own educational adventure - deciding that your own path is one of challenge, opportunity and exploration.

Unfortunately we have had a good 20 years of "reform" in higher education that has largely turned universities into institutes for vocational learning. This is reinforced by the "user pays" mentality of the client-students who have expectations of a return on their education investment. And while Zac may not fall into this category, my experience (as both a teacher and business employer) indicates that we are producing a workforce which is largely unable to learn, having been spoon-fed for far too long.

Like anything in life, you only get out what you put in. And education is no different. Investing in relationships with your teachers can be hugely rewarding. Where else will you find people so willing to share their knowledge and wisdom with you? I say, take it while you can get it!

Re: On being a man and losing a loved one

You are writing by the light of the axe, Scott. So while, 4chan may be "anonymous", there are certain "voices" which are readily identifiable. And of course, "social" means different things to different people - shouting down a street is likely to be considered ANTI-social in some neighbourhoods ;)

But bring it up another level. What is the currency of the exchange? What is the story that contributors tell on the site, in their head, and to others? I am not sure ... but I THINK that community is only created when there is an exchange of value between participants. What that value is, is defined by the context of the community. And a core part of the exchange is trust.

Without that, without the abrasions that mark us out as individuals (whether words, names, turns of phrase or other markers), then we cannot have community. So I am still on the side of anonymity being the antithesis of community ;)

Re: When a paradigm breaks, what sound does it make?

Put your money where your mouth is, big boy.

Re: Think less, do more: 5 days to a focused you

Love it, Mark. And the first one for me, was sending you my pic and bio for MarketingProfs -- from that point onwards, the "servant of chaos" inexorably became "gavin heaton".

The collision between the "real" and "writing" selves is what makes social media an interesting experiment for both the audience and the participants. Kids are now growing up never having known anything different -- they have always been connected. While we can say "nothing beats face-to-face", this is, in fact, a value judgement that places face-to-face communication ahead of digital connection. But the coming generations will see things differently. We may see that as "sad" or even as a "Paradise Lost" ... but we also need to remember that the initial impulse to connect is human. Kids are just expressing this connectedness in a new way.

Re: American Idolatry

Take a step back from the technology ... look. I think one of the big differences you touch on is choice. These days, Alpha, Beta and even Omega moms have a variety of choice and access to opportunity that did not exist in the 70s.

Perhaps it is, in part, the way that choice is exercised that makes the difference.

But the fact that kids do not come with instruction manuals (or volume switches) means that we are perpetually working in Beta. Me? I am looking forward to the first release ... terrifying and rewarding at the same time.

Re: I Suspect Everyone Else Is Smarter, Better-Looking, Taller, Cooler, Cuter, Has Newer and Shinier Objects than I Do (and Is More Modest)

So, I keep referring people to this post, Ann as it is a great story about overcoming (or at least sharing) our self doubts with others.
Of course the most impressive people are the bravest ... and not many choose to be as honest as you are here ;)

Re: Notice to Staff and Stakeholders: Reorg

Chapter 11 is looking better all the time ;)

There is so much to look forward to!

Re: I Can Haz Hoomin Hart-aik

You are such a great storyteller, Ann! Adults are too tired or time poor to truck kids around for a massive variety of activities. And the competitive landscape for even kids activities has changed dramatically - there is less opportunity to try and fail now than when I was growing up. And for kids, this means there is less opportunity to learn, dream and experience.

Games like the Wii return some of that important aspirational play that has been missing recently.

Oh, and I bet you rock out as a Guitar Hero ;)

Re: 10 Things I Hate About You, Travel Edition

Ok ... well I am a chatterer. Sort of. You see, anywhere I travel is going to be a long distance - probably over night. So I am going to need to be able to move around, ask questions etc of the person next to me. And the easiest way of doing this is to establish a quick relationship with the person next to you.

But I also gauge the level if interest of the other person. If we hit it off, then we can chat for hours. Otherwise it's over to the book, the inflight movie or the trusty iPod.

Re: Awkward Family Photos

It was with some trepidation that I went to that site last week. Kvell.

Thanks Ann ... this is why blogs are not dead ;) Where else do we get a story that touches our hearts because it comes from the heart? It must be exciting (and slightly daunting) to be pushing your child out into the ocean of life. Of course, as we do so - with great care - we imagine our kids as small boats made of folded newspaper. Yet when they return they are seaworthy, burnished by the salt and riding the waves.

I hope I am as brave as you when my kids head off to college. Oh, and are you writing a book? I think it is important to put some space between what you do as a strategy agency and what digital agencies do.

Re: Learning from the Top 50 Aussie Marketing Blogs

What I like about the list is that it shows the strength and depth of knowledge that is available here in Australia.

As you point out, the list uses global measures such as Alexa and Technorati to calculate the ranking, which works well if you have an overseas readership or a technology audience (Alexa in particular works here).

But it is good to see an Australian focus. While the basics of marketing are relatively standard, the subtleties of execution and audience are where it counts. I for one am looking forward to seeing this list grow.

Re: Linden Labs Releases Real Numbers for Virtual World

It is not just journalists that need to ask the hard questions ... business investors, agencies, technologists and anyone who needs to understand the business models underlying web 2.0 initiatives need to keep their wits about them. However, new products, especially new motorcycle products, can rapidly transform the market opportunity.
