Very good points. The point I was making was more about ball park estimates based on your experience as a vendor. Going back to your example of the roof, if I know that it costs $10K - $20K and my house is worth $100K it makes sense (i.e. the value of fixing it is obvious). Else if you say the roof is going to be in the $50K range, regardless of pain, I might consider alternatives.

The adoption of less expensive SaaS is a case in point. Yes there were mission critical problems, but at this low price point, it makes sense to try and see if it works, would be the thinking of several enterprise folks.

I think the first points you talk about is that fact that people socialize "everywhere" in real life. What that means is that big social networks like Facebook are flawed in assuming that everyone wants to come there to "socialize". I dont ask all my friends to come to Borders and hangout or Starbucks and meet. Just the ones that like books meet me at Borders and they may be different from the ones that like coffee. If there's one place that I DO hangout a lot its at home, where I invite a lot of people. Which I guess is your digital equivalent of a blog. What's the digital equivalent of work in that case? Or is the point that work/home in the digital world are becoming "one".

The second point I think you make is around specialty. Each of these tools is good at one thing and is trying to add other things. Equivalent to Borders adding coffee but subleasing it to Seattle's Best, instead of having their own coffee. But these tools are trying to come up with their own social networking features, which does not make them the best at everything, and the thing they were good at gets watered down - e.g. MyBlogLog - was a good platform for meeting new bloggers, now its a mess of lifestreaming stuff.

Thoughts?

1. Hosting my blog (annual domain fees) + quick blog (it sucks don't do it)
2. Paid one time $19 for IMplus on my blackberry
3. quicken online for business.

I think everyone needs to stop dictating "how people should or will do certain things". Most folks are creatures of habit and do what they are used to. There are existing communities I am sure, but by default I use my firefox browser for search. If I type something into my search and get results with links connecting me to people that are searching for something similar, I will be inclined to connect and ask - "hey did you find what you were looking for?". I can see how this might "possibly" reduce the # of "frustrated" search users, who keep searching and give up.

I am searching on how to set my mp3 dll preferences on audacity. Someone else is searching for audacity for the same thing or something similar. Maybe they can help me find my issue and I could help resolve their since I ran into that problem before.

Why not? Its a great feature.

Maybe a wrong comment, but I *NEVER* visit your blog. I read your content daily. I dont understand why people spend time on getting their blog design "right". I have the right blog design already - its called Google reader.

But you do write well.

I am missing something. Why do you want to be the #1 commenter on your blog? Why dont you just blog about the questions / discussions in your comments section?

MSM will do badly not because of citizen bloggers or user generated news, they will evolve because they cannot deal with a changing business environment when they are stuck with their old ways of making money.

At a previous company, few select people were allowed to blog. Obviously this created a new seperation of "haves" and "have nots". The rules were not arbitrary, but there was a general fear of "who knows what they will say?".

Most companies are worried about the "perception" of their brand than any other item including legal. Its a nuance on your quality point, but it is a valid concern that can be addressed.
