in The Face To Face Reference Check on A VC
Fred,

I'm sure that this barely puts a dent on the returns you need to generate, but I'm going to ask anyway:

If a company decides to make dividend payments, are those payments passed through to investors in the fund or just reinvested? Or does this simply not happen frequently enough to even matter?

fredwilson I've not seen this happen in my portfolio. It might work with smaller investments and lower valuations

Fred,

If I'm not mistaken that IS Kosmix. Same company. They're building many vertical content aggregators utilizing the same technology. Then they're buying tons of traffic to them.

Fred,

Isn't Google the ultimate aggregator? I bet you people don't look at them that way often, but you could, no?

Also there is tapeworm aggregation and artful aggregation. Artful aggregation organizes, categorizes, and surfaces content in a way that is more meaningful than the disparate, individual sources themselves.

in Introducing Blogrollr - A Blogroll That Works For Me on A VC
It would be useful to show a few posts per item in BlogRollr to give people an idea of what each site is about. Site descriptions might also be useful. I would also like to know the number of clicks (from your site only) each item in your blog roll receives to gauge the popularity (among your readers) of each of the sites. I think this would be more useful than an Alexa rating or Compete stats because it would be geared towards your site's community.

Not sure how easy this would be, but adding "Most Active" would also be interesting. This would presumably take into account clicks, comments, votes or otherwise. Client-side javascript maybe?

they should definitely contact AMEE at http://amee.com. They could license their data through AMEE's web service.

in Brand Strength Can Create Tangible Value For Your Start-Up on College Mogul
Mike,

How do you increase the perceived value of a company? Transaction values of companies with strong intangibles such as brand tend to be higher, thus driving higher multiples, but how? Is it reliability? Is it "goodness" of the company?

I find it really interesting that under one third of entrepreneurs view financial success as their primary motivation for starting a company. Frankly, I can relate, although I didn't expect the masses to share similar feelings, as insulting as that sounds.

Oh by the way...Jawed Karim didn't start PayPal. So obviously it wasn't him that was cool with the YouTube guys going off.

in WePay: The "PayPal for Groups" on College Mogul
Ahh, but the big elephant in the room not touched in this article is that successful online financial transaction companies are not money exchange companies they are security companies. They must be in order to succeed. The only reason PayPal was able to be successful while other industry entrants fell by the wayside is because their management team had deep experience in encryption and security and thus were able to reduce fraud dramatically. In fact, PayPal had to launch a whole new arm of the company dedicated entirely to security. Customers at this point (unlike years ago when PayPal became popular) expect high security, which WePay cannot guarantee.

The post was not too long....I read every word of it. One question I have. Speaking of dying acquisitions whatever happen to Jaiku? I know you pointed out that Google is not perfect, but was that just an Android play?

in Can The Y Combinator Idea Turn Into A Movement? on A VC
The concept of Bioanalogy is what led Silicon Valley to dominate Route 128 in the battle for the best entrepreneurial community. Route 128 was always about vertical as opposed to horizontal integration.

On another note, what was the university considering this? My blog covers university entrepreneurship.

in Does Work/Life Balance Exist for Entrepreneurs? on Social Times
I am one of those people wasting away in front of my computer trying to make it as a young entrepreneur. But I have never been happier. Before I was working 100 hours a week as an investment banker building someone else's assets. Talk about taking years off your life. At least I'm dying doing something I truly care about.

I completely support the free-trade agreement. I don`t understand why Democrats are opposing this issue when it may help bolster small businesses and create new jobs on domestic soil.

Corporations aren't the only ones. We covered an green tech expo at Babson in which the first ever residential wind turbine was presented...I guess higher education institutions are on board as well.

in Startup Reactor: The Elevator Pitch on How To Split An Atom
I think that LogoBid has potential. If it could become online bidding system for ALL small business graphic design work (i.e. not just logos but promotional pamphlets and flyers), I think it could really take off. Many small businesses develop logos and promotional pamphlets to distribute on the ground as opposed to relying on online advertising. However, some businesses such as the mom and pop deli around the corner can't afford talent. An online market could drive down prices, giving small business more options and designers a greater presence.
