I am from Sweden, and Swedish is very close to Danish. That in combination with a Danish girlfriend and a Danish job has made it easy for me to learn Danish. However I still believe it is possible for anyone to learn it, and I think your approach is just right: Listen on the TV, music and people talking.

A friend of mine tought me the saying "When you buy quality, you only cry once". I think it fits most of the time... =)
As to getting to know different lenses and their quality, I try to read up on forums to get a clearer view on "what people think" about the specific lens. There are also some photo shops in Copenhagen where you can bring your camera and try some shots with their lenses. Then you can go home and have a look at 100%.
I have decided not to go for the pro (a.k.a. most expensive) zoom lenses for a while because of the price tag - while they might be extremely good, this is still a hobby for me which I don't make any money off of yet.
I mostly buy used prime lenses, which is a cheap way to get superior quality, but on the other hand, it can be a bit messy to swap lenses all the time. I suppose it could be enough to own just two great 2.8 zoom lenses...
